Chapter 83: It’s troublesome

Defeat the monster called Escape Lizard and bring its corpse back to this place. That seems to be the content of the first exam.

Examiner Gain briefly explained the characteristics of the monster.

“It’s a lizard monster with an over-all length of two meters, and although it is not very strong, it moves fast. In addition, by changing its whole-body color, it can blend in with the surrounding scenery like a chameleon. These guys are the only lizard monster in this level, so you would not confuse it for another monster.”

It’s a very simple and easy-to-understand test.

“Alright. Good luck to both of you.”

“Mmm. I’ll do my best.”

“I’ll catch one right away.”

I don’t want to disturb them so I’m going to stay here. As they are ready to go, Fana carefully lowered me to the ground. Gain who saw this, suddenly rebuked her.

“Wait a minute, are you going to leave him here? You are not asking us to protect him, are you?”

“Master does not need that.”

“Master?”

I spoke to Gain with an innocent baby smile,

“It’s okay, Examiner-ojichan. Though I look like this, I’m a B-rank adventurer too.”

“Wha-!?, Y-you just talked?”

Gain’s eyes widened and the examinees begin to buzz.

“Yes. Master is a talking baby.”

“……You’re still not explaining anything. But yeah, it’s hard to explain it well…… Anyways, as you can see, he is not a normal baby. As he had said, he is a B-rank adventurer, and he has a guild certificate for it.”

When I showed him my guild card, he murmured, “I-it’s real….…”

“Knowing this all of a sudden….it’s still hard to understand…… We’ll accept it for the time being.”

“I mean, on the other hand, if you’re really a B-rank adventurer, you shouldn’t have accompanied them to the exam in the first place.”

That’s what Emily, another examiner, pointed out.

“Is that so Examiner-oneechan? I’m not going to lend them a hand though?”

“That may be true, but we’d be in trouble if you guys had prepared it this way for the exam. Like you’re making it so we can’t see it…. Anyways, we’re all here now so it can’t be helped. I’ll just keep quiet this time.”

It seems that she’s giving me a special exception. The half-elf receptionist didn’t remind me about this maybe because she didn’t think I was an adventurer and just regarded me as a talking baby.

After regaining their composure, Gain announced the start of the exam.

“Alright. Let the exam begin!”

The examinees begin to move in unison. An hour seems like enough time, but on the other hand, it might just be that much more difficult to catch the monster they are aiming for.

“Even so, I never thought that such a baby would be a B-rank adventurer……”

“Actually, I’ve been hearing rumors about the birth of the youngest B-rank adventurer in history. He was said to be zero-year-old, so I was like, ‘Oh, what a lie.’ Then it all turned out to be true!”

While the examiners were having such exchanges, I used my search magic to do a quick survey of the surroundings.

Oh, there’s a monster pretty close.

Around that rock?

But when I looked closely, I couldn’t find its presence. Somehow, it just didn’t feel right. But maybe, an Escape Lizard was there before? With that in mind, I kicked the ground and approached the place in an instant.

Perhaps it also noticed me, I could see that the magical reaction I felt there before began to move at breakneck speed.

“I won’t let you escape.”

“~~~~!?”

However, it accelerates further so I could only stop it. I landed a kick on its body as it tries to escape. I couldn’t see it clearly, but I had a definite feeling that I had kicked something.

“Oh, this look is…..”

A body covered with brown scales appeared in front of me. I had heard that its combat power was not a big deal and it seemed that they were indeed right. It was completely unconscious from the blow just now.

Perhaps by replacing the scales with the same color as the rocks, it hid there. I tugged on the Escape Lizard’s tail and walked back to where I came from.

“How long do you think they will take to come back?”

“It’s going to take half an hour at the earliest. Most probably only less than half of them could do it and most won’t catch one until the end.”

“That means half of them will surely be dropped out here huh.”

“Well, it is a test that sounds easy, but it’s actually quite difficult. Escape Lizards are hard to spot because of their ability to change color, and they are also very alert. Furthermore, they would run away as soon as you get close to them. Their speed is incredibly fast, so it is a bit troublesome.”

That’s what the examiners are talking about this time.

……It wasnt a big deal at all, was it?

At that moment, they looked back at me almost at the same time.

“Hey, don’t leave this area too long—”

“That’s right. It’s quite dangerous for you if you’re not near—”

“““—W-why is there an Escape Lizard here!?”””
