Walking, Chapter 244: Trouble at the medical tent

“Shun-oniichan, you were amazing!”

“That was so cool!”

“Haha, thanks.”

When I returned to the food stall, Shiro and Fran rushed up to me, buzzing with excitement. Looks like I managed to show them something worth seeing.

“Shun-san is truly an incredible person. Your cooking’s great, and you’re that strong, too.”

“As expected of Shun-sama.”

Sylvia-san and the head attendant praised me for my impressive fight with Sue.

Mm, it felt nice to be complimented—but I didn’t really have time to bask in it.

“You were something else, kid. Gimme two meat sandwiches.”

“Great food and skill. I’ll have five rice balls.”

“Got it. Please wait just a moment.”

I turned back to the grill, already moving on to the next order.

Because I’d returned to the stall, an absurd number of customers came flooding in all at once. I hurried to grill meat and shape rice balls as fast as I could, but the line just wouldn’t end. Honestly, the exhibition match from earlier felt easier than this.

Of course, everyone else working the stall was just as swamped.

And then, at last, the moment I’d been dreading arrived.

“I’m sorry—we’re sold out.”

“No way. Well, guess I’ll come back again tomorrow.”

“Looks like you’ve gotta line up early if you want to eat at this stall.”

As the disappointed customers drifted away, I let out a quiet breath, my arms finally getting a moment’s rest.

We ran out of ingredients and had no choice but to close up shop. When we put up the Sold Out sign, the customers left with regret written on their faces.

All the matches had just wrapped up as well, so the timing couldn’t have been better.

As we were going through the closing procedures, Sue and Horn came over to the stall, both wearing exhausted expressions.

Did something happen?

“What’s wrong with you two? You look really worn out.”

“Actually… after the exhibition match, we started getting hit on a lot.”

“Even that muscle head who lost to Ao tried to flirt with me.”

“Ah… yeah, I can see how that’d be rough.”

‘Rough’ didn’t even begin to cover it.

“It was way worse than that. One of them even proposed.”

“Sue-oneechan blasted him away with magic.”

I couldn’t help but let out a dry laugh.

Yeah… that really did sound exhausting. And wow, a marriage proposal of all things. No wonder Sue was completely worn out.

I can practically picture it now, Sue blasting an overconfident fighter away with magic.

At that point, all you can really say is, good work surviving that.

With the stall fully closed, we headed back to the mansion together with the attendants.

“Still, the customers never let up today.”

“There were so many people.”

“We sold a lot.”

It was our first time ever selling out, and honestly, it had been nonstop chaos.

Between Ao’s match and the exhibition bout, the publicity had clearly paid off.

“Tomorrow there are fewer matches but the crowd will be larger.”

“After all, it’s just the two semifinals and the final.”

The real issue wasn’t the length of the schedule, but how many people would show up.

Thinking about that, we arrived back at the mansion.

“Thanks to the exhibition match today, we were able to apprehend quite a few suspicious individuals.”

“All we can do now is pray that nothing happens tomorrow.”

“That’s a long shot though. Of course, security will be tight.”

I spoke with the Margrave. But more than anything, tomorrow passing without incident is what matters most.

I’m particularly worried about the magician who’ll be fighting Ao.

Today’s opponent had overslept and performed so poorly that the match told us almost nothing. It hadn’t been useful as a reference at all.

No matter what, tomorrow would depend on Ao rising to the occasion.

Chapter 325: What’s most troublesome

“Well then—it seems everyone has safely made it to the starting point.”

Forty-eight hours later, the eleven examinees had gathered at the tower. Not a single person had been eliminated.  All of them had managed to arrive within the time limit.

That said, most of the candidates arrived just in time, and the very last one had barely made it with only ten minutes to spare.

As for me, I was still in the cockpit of the Seno Grande Kai, overseeing the examination as it played out on the monitors. With full audio too.

“Now then, without further ado, we will begin the first examination.”

“W-wait a second!”

The one who hurriedly raised his hand was the adventurer who had arrived last.

“I—I only just got here! It’s only been ten minutes. I ran without sleep or rest, got attacked by monsters over and over along the way… C-can’t you at least give us a little more time to recover?”

He probably thought it was unfair, since those who arrived early would have had plenty of rest.

Randia answered with a sarcastic laugh.

“I see. It sounds as though you’ve already completed a thorough warm-up. By all means, I look forward to seeing the results of that effort in the first examination.”

With that, he casually brushed aside his plea for mercy.

“And now, as for the all-important contents of the first examination—it is to locate an Evil Unicorn and bring back its horn.”

“““Evil Unicorn?”””

“Yes. It is an upper-tier subspecies of unicorn that inhabits only the deepest reaches of this Infinite Wasteland. Its horn is extremely rare. So rare that it’s even said to be a material for elixirs. The time limit is twenty-four hours. In other words, if you return to this tower by this time tomorrow with an Evil Unicorn’s horn, you will pass the first examination.”

He paused briefly before adding,

“For reference, the Evil Unicorn’s favorite food is carrots. It seems to be especially fond of carrots from the Kōrai region. With its exceptional sense of smell, it can detect the carrot’s scent from several hundred meters away and will approach on its own once it sniff a scent of it.”

The explanation ended there, leaving the weight of the trial to sink in.

When Randia opened the box at his feet, it was filled to the brim with carrots from the Kōrai region.

“Each of you may take five. Be warned—once they’re gone, there will be no more. With that, the first examination will begin as of this moment.”

The examinees snatched up carrots in a scramble and burst out of the tower all at once.

Fana, Anje, and Orion followed right after them.

“This really does seem like a test that favors Fana-oneechan again.”

“What kind of monster is this Evil Unicorn, exactly?”

Karen spoke up with a question.

“First of all, a unicorn is a horse-type monster with a horn growing from its head. They’re extremely fast and highly wary, which makes them difficult to hunt. That said, their actual strength isn’t anything special… but when it comes to the upper-tier variant—the Evil Unicorn—that’s a completely different story. They’re incredibly aggressive, and on top of that, they’re very strong. And the most troublesome part is that horn of theirs—ah, looks like one of the examinees has already run into one.”

One of the eleven candidates was walking along with five carrots hanging from his belt when, from the distance, an Evil Unicorn came charging toward him at terrifying speed.

“T-this sound of hoofbeats…! So it’s here—eh?”

Sensing something amiss, the adventurer turned around and immediately doubted his own eyes. By the time he looked back, the massive horse was already bearing down on him.

“~~~~~!?”

He was sent flying, hurled through the air, and slammed hard against a rocky outcrop.

“Guh… ngh… t-that thing… is that the Evil Unicorn!?”

Even so, he was an A-rank adventurer aiming for S-rank after all. Grimacing in pain, he somehow managed to force himself back to his feet.

“It’s… this huge…?”

“Hihiiiiiiiiiin!!”

The Evil Unicorn let out a thunderous neigh. It looked to be roughly ten meters in length, standing about five meters tall. The horn growing from its head was nearly a meter long. It’s more like a knight’s charging lance than anything one would call a horn.

“Fire Lance!”

The adventurer hurled an attack spell at the Evil Unicorn as it made a wide U-turn, almost leisurely changing direction.

However, the spell was effortlessly dodged and the beast sprang forward again at blistering speed.

“Oh no—whoa!?”

The A-rank adventurer desperately evaded the charge, but—

“My carrots!?”

All five carrots hanging at his waist were deftly snatched away by the unicorn’s horn.

The Evil Unicorn munched on the carrots as it ran, and the adventurer chased after it in a panic. But since their speed was on entirely different levels, the distance between them only grew.

“Damn it! Did it get away…?”

The adventurer gave up and came to a stop.

Just then, the Evil Unicorn—having finished its carrots—came back.

“Thank goodness, it’s still nearby! …Huh? Is something… glowing around its horn?”

The very next instant, a ferocious bolt of black lightning erupted from the unicorn’s horn, blasting apart the ground right at the adventurer’s feet.

“…Huh?”

After standing there in stunned silence for a moment, the adventurer finally seemed to grasp what had just been done to him.

“T-th-this thing’s a monster! There’s no way anyone can beat something like that!!”

He turned tail and ran.

“Right—that horn is what makes it so troublesome. It can unleash lightning that powerful.”

“I see, indeed. But even after getting its favorite carrots, why did it bother to come back?”

“I told you, it’s highly aggressive. Especially toward anyone who attacks it. It won’t show mercy and will chase them down until it finishes them off.”

“That is far too frightening. Will that adventurer be all right?”

“Hard to say. Still, it likes carrots more than anything else, so if it catches the scent of another batch, it’ll probably head that way instead. …Ah—speak of the devil.”

The Evil Unicorn suddenly twitched its nose, as if it had sensed something, then abruptly abandoned its pursuit of the adventurer and changed direction.

“That adventurer just barely escaped with his life.”

“Yeah. And with his carrots gone, he’ll probably have to withdraw.”

Walking, Chapter 243: Exhibition Match part 4

“This match will be a combined battle using magic. Activating the magical barrier device!”

Vuuiiin.

With the magical apparatus now generating a protective barrier, Sue and I drew our wooden swords from our magic bags.

I held a short sword in each hand, while Sue poised her rapier.

“Then, let the second exhibition match begin!”

““Whoa—!””

At the Margrave’s wife’s signal, the crowd erupted even louder. Amidst the cheers, Sue and I simultaneously levitated several magic projectiles into the air.

We held our wooden swords at the ready.

Whoooosh, whoooosh, whoooosh.

Dash!

“Both combatants dashed forward as they unleash their magic projectiles!”

Sue and I charged toward the center of the stage, our magic orbs colliding and canceling each other out.

Thud thud thud—BOOM!

““Hah!””

Clang! Clang!

“Simultaneously nullifying the magic projectiles, they’ve engaged in a fierce sword exchange!”

“Whoa—what is this?”

“Feels like all the previous matches didn’t even exist!”

In close combat, Sue and I traded sword strikes. After putting some distance between us, we both launched magic attacks. The rapid-fire clash left the audience breathless, their eyes wide and silent.

As for me, since the Madam had asked for a flashy, extended match, I made sure to skillfully meet Sue’s techniques head-on, keeping the fight dramatic and exciting.

Dash—dash, Ha!

Thud thud thud—BOOM!

“Both Shun and Sue are constantly moving, never pausing, yet their magic and sword strikes are precise!”

“Hah!”

“Sei!”

Compared to the start, Sue had grown incredibly strong. Every day she trained with all her might, and there was no doubt she would become even stronger.

“One minute remaining!”

With time running short—and knowing Sue wouldn’t be satisfied with holding back—I decided it was time to get serious too.

Boooom, booom, booom!

“Ah!”

“W-what’s this? Shun has unleashed an unbelievable number of magic projectiles!”

“Amazing! What is that?”

“That’s an insane amount!”

I unleashed a massive volley of magic projectiles all at once.

Whoosh… whoosh… whoosh…

Thud thud thud—BOOM!

“Guh-”

I launched a full saturation attack at Sue, sending a barrage of magic projectiles her way. She hastily erected a magical barrier and fought to deflect them, countering as best she could.

At that moment, I momentarily halted my assault.

Boom!

“Aah—my view!”

I sent a few projectiles skimming the ground at Sue’s feet, kicking up clouds of dust to obscure her vision.

Crack!

“Oh! Shun just used Barrier Break! He shattered Sue’s magical shield! Now he’s pressing his sword against her while surrounding her with a wall of magic projectiles!”

“As expected of Shun… I lost!”

“Sue’s fighting style is too clean. You should learn a few more subtle techniques.”

“Even Sura-chan uses blindfolds, so let’s study it some more to study.”

“Yes, thank you.”

I dissipated the remaining magic projectiles and extended my hand. Sue shook it firmly, acknowledging her defeat, but her expression was bright and composed.

“Sue has conceded. Shun is the victor! Nonetheless, it was truly a match worthy of two adventurers with dual titles.”

“Whoa! That was an incredible fight!”

“The guy who runs the food stall is that strong?”

“The medic from the tent was amazing too!”

Clap clap clap!

The audience erupted in applause, celebrating the match. The exhibition bout had concluded successfully, leaving both Sue and me with a sense of satisfaction.

Hazure Skill “Alarm”, jitsuwa fūin kaijo no nōryoku deshita. Ochikobore no shōnen wa, nemuri kara sameta megami-tachi to yasashī saikyō o mezasu

Chapter 131: Worst Enemy

The man astride the horse introduced himself as Rata. Borrowing the gods’ way of speaking, he is also probably a monster.

The situation was bad—so bad it could fairly be called the worst possible.

A fierce wind swept through the square, kicking up clouds of dust. The exits to the streets were blocked by bandits, and behind me the monster Rata waited on horseback.

I used Sun’s Divine Protection, cloaking myself in Golden Flame. If the enemies had been only bandits, I might have been able to scramble up the wall and escape. With my enhanced physical abilities, it would have been possible.

The real problem stood before me.

—Nils-san. He is already drawing his sword.

Tension surged up from my chest. I tried to recall the breathing technique Father had taught me to calm myself, but it didn’t work. At one time, I had overlapped Nils-san with my father in my mind. The more I tried to steady myself, the more my vision blurred, and all I could do was let my voice tremble.

 “…It’s a lie, isn’t it?”

The shock was so overwhelming that my knees nearly gave out beneath me.

Nils-san—no, the god Freyr—didn’t even blink.

“I used Seiðr magic.”

His reply was clear and decisive, like a sword cleaving straight through me.

“First, I erased my memories as a god and implanted false ones—those of an older brother searching for his younger sister. That way, you wouldn’t suspect me.”

He raised a second finger.

“Second, Seiðr magic manipulates the mind, which means it can also seal divine power. To approach you as a human, it was more convenient to suppress not only my memories, but my power as a god as well. There was a chance that the gods allied with you might sense me otherwise you see.”

He wasn’t explaining out of kindness. He was forcing me to face reality—that the adventurer I thought had become my companion, even our party member, had been my enemy from the very beginning.

“No way….”

Dont be fooled, I told myself.

And yet my thoughts wouldn’t stop racing.

I knew now that the Freyr I had seen in the dungeon—like his sister, the goddess Freyja—had been a fake, a mere projection, a replica. That meant the real one had escaped the ice and taken up residence in a human body like this.

The wind caught his blond hair, sending it fluttering as Freyr closed his fingers tightly around a necklace. As though swearing an oath, he pressed it to his forehead, then carefully tucked it back inside his clothes.

A gasp slipped from my lips.

“T-that’s….”

There was no doubt about it. It was the necklace Nils-san had carried, the one he had treasured as his only clue to his missing sister.

“Nils-san, you said you were searching for your sister….”

“On that point, I did not lie. I am searching for my sister.”

Freyr spoke without a hint of expression.

“The Goddess of Fertility—Freyja.”

Somehow, I understood at least that much.

The desire to search for one’s family was something even the mind-control Seiðr magic could not completely conceal.

Loki’s voice echoed in my head.

『The necklace Brísingamen. A divine artifact belonging to the younger goddess, Freyja. I wondered why it wasn’t around her neck. Her brother was the one carrying it huh.』

He continued.

『Just like with Safi, items with a “protective” effect might weaken the ice of the seal. That’s how Freyr managed to regain consciousness from the seal on his own. Now the pieces fit, but his motivation remains unclear.』

He was right.

No matter how I thought about it, I couldn’t understand why Freyr would side with monsters and try to prevent us from awakening the goddess Freyja.

He was a god himself…. so why would he interfere with waking another god?

“.…Just tell me one thing.”

I shouted.

“Why are you our enemy?!”

“To protect my sister. If Odin’s scheme succeeds, then Freyja—”

I leaned forward, determined not to miss a single word of what came next.

Freyr’s sword moved. Smoothly and naturally, its tip turned toward me.

“—!”

It was a slash like a flash of light.

I twisted my body and barely evaded it. I deflected the follow-up strike with my short sword and leapt back. Without the Golden Flame, I would have been cut clean in two.

“Hah—”

I took a deep breath.

He tried to distract me with words.

That was a feint. He was playing mind games!

Freyr’s eyes were cold and clear. I have to fight, yet something deep inside me screamed no.

I don’t want to fight this man. The man who’s searching for his sister.

『Rion! There’s no time! Wake us up!』

Thor’s voice rang out, but I shook my head.

My right hand reached toward my pocket—only for my left hand to grab it and force it down.

“Not yet! I—I need to talk to him!”

『Listen! The enemy didn’t tell you all that out of kindness! He definitely has a plan! He’s stalling you and us gods. He’s buying time!』

I forced myself to remember the situation I was in. I was surrounded in an alley, still holding the coins that housed the gods. I was separated from my companions.

The one who had lured us in here was Uru.

『No, Thor. Rion has a point. This is a chance to gather information. If all of us come out, Freyr will retreat. If we want to keep him talking and drag this out, now is our only chance.』

『Ugh…!』

『Let him talk. Hold back for now.』

『He’s a god! Do you have any idea what that could lead to!?』

Freyr stepped forward. From a high, overhead swing, he made a downward strike. The sword technique known as “Wrath Strike”. His most powerful attack, was not something I could afford to take head-on.

I leapt sideways.

But he was already ahead of me, intercepting my movement, he drive a piercing thrust straight toward me.

“Gah…!”

I caught it on my blade, but the impact sent me flying anyway.

『You’ll be torn to pieces…!』

Thor’s words echoed distantly in my mind. The overwhelming difference in power I’d felt during our sparring sessions—it was the same now. If I charged, I’d surely lose. Yet he kept coming.

“Double Scattering Strike.”

Using the <Swordsman> skill, I launched my technique. I barely blocked the twin slashes coming from both sides. My cheek, which had been grazed, felt a burning pain.

“Why… why would a god like you side with monsters…!?”

“I told you. Protecting what’s precious requires sacrifices.”

“Does this have something to do with Odin’s scheme…or Freyja-sama’s message?”

Freyr fell silent, then turned the tip of his sword toward me again.

I raised my voice, refusing to back down.

“Wake up!”

The blue-crystal short sword glowed green as its magical runes flared.

The sudden gust, raised by the spirit, should have thrown him off—but Freyr moved with a dancer’s grace, dodging it effortlessly. Of course, it couldn’t hold him back. He was a god after all.

I blocked his merciless upward slash with the short sword.

“That body… it’s human too!”

“Human? Yes. The pitiful man whose skills were devoured, left a hollow shell.”

Heat surged through my chest.

A sword swung in a wide arc from his right side. I spun the other way, deflecting it with a mirrored motion. It was a reflexive maneuver, but Freyr narrowed his eyes. For the first time, he seemed genuinely impressed. He leapt backward, putting distance between us.

And then I heard Solana’s voice.

『Rion, I believe in you! But…!』

The god’s words came out like blood being coughed up.

『Freyr is a powerful god. Skills are the divine power scattered into humans. And… probably—』

The next wave of attacks came like a violent storm, making me shrink instinctively. I dodged, ducked, and occasionally deflected—but no matter how it looked, I was being toyed with, led around.

It felt as if invisible threads were pulling me.

Completely, he could read my movements, my intentions, even my hesitation.

“Your Swordsman skill… was it original?”

“Are you not going to use your skill?”

Amid sparks flying from our clashing blades, Freyr’s whisper cut through the noise.

I was using the Golden Flame, but it wasn’t enough. I knew it. But as always, I couldn’t bring myself to summon my skill, to steel my heart and fight.

I swore to the Goddess that I would become the “kindest of the strongest”. From the all-encompassing message that echoed across the sky, I had also heard the word “hero”.

But I couldn’t bring myself to rouse the power meant to strike down this person—someone who had once been my companion, someone who was searching for his sister—without even knowing the full story.

“Rion. What is your resolve?”

The question came with a kick. It felt as though an iron bar had been driven straight into my stomach, and I was hurled backward.

My back slammed into a wall.

The air burst from my lungs.

If not for the armor Safi had so carefully maintained, I would have blacked out.

“Questions arise one after another. What do you cherish? What is it that you will never surrender?”

“Q-questions…?”

“Yes. I have chosen. My sister—I will reclaim her, no matter what. And beyond that, I choose nothing else. That is my resolve.”

His blue eyes bore into me. There wasn’t the slightest trace of cloudiness or hesitation in them. A stark difference from me. I still wanted to talk, to ask, to understand.

The skill had activated because of fear. Because I knew that if things continued like this, I would die.

“Thunder God’s… Hammer!”

The lightning was effortlessly avoided.

His counter attack slashed across my shoulder. The impact hit me like a burning lance, pain searing through me all at once.

Solana screamed.

『Rion!』

I tried to force myself upright. I had to use a skill—use a blessing.

Another voice followed, tight with urgency.

『…This is the limit. Rion, awaken us.』

Uru’s words echoed in my mind—but then another voice drowned them out.

“Oniichan!”

An impossible call came from behind. I spun around.

“Lu…?”

It was her. Lu.

Impossible. She should be in the capital. H-how…?

For a moment, I forgot the pain, the battle. My attention was stolen.

Her face twisted with sadness.

“Oniichan, why are you fighting that person…?”

――!

My chest tightened.

I had sworn, like in the stories, like Father did, to become a kind and strong adventurer. And yet here I was, fighting the very person who was searching for his sister.

“That…!”

A sharp, stabbing pain throbbed through my chest.

Nils-san… no, Freyr…?

Our desire to protect our families was the same—so why weren’t we on the same side?

Before I could dwell on it, Lu’s face twisted into a gleeful, almost cruel smile.

“Hahahahahaha!”

I froze. A monster was laughing using Lu’s face.

“So, as I thought, you are strong yet at the same time, terribly weak.”

Frost crept over Lu’s body. A burst of white light erupted—and from within, Rata appeared.

So it had been an illusion.

“You—!”

“Oh my? Were you planning to just stare idly?”

A sword struck from the side. I was flung back, along with the short sword I had been holding. As I landed and tried to take cover, a boot slammed into me. Pinned against the wall, I barely managed to point my short sword forward.

My vision was terrible. Whether it was from the damage or from tears, I couldn’t tell.

『Rion! 』

I had no choice but to face the truth. Nils-san, no, Freyr had become my enemy.

He wouldn’t return. He wouldn’t come back to the party.

“Help me… Goddess!”

I clenched the gold coin in my left hand.

Solana, Thor, Loki, Sigris and Uru appeared, scattering golden light as they manifested.

Freyr, god of swords, halted at a measured distance.

“So… you’ve cling to the gods.”

Freyr’s lips twisted ever so slightly.

A sharp sting of defeat pierced my chest. I couldn’t gather my resolve, couldn’t fight back. My determination—my resolve to protect my sister—felt weak.

The wind whipped wildly, tossing Freyr’s golden hair like a living flame.

“Kindness without resolve is no different from weakness.”

The words drove into my chest like an icicle.

Solana swung her right arm.

“Traitor! Do not mock those with a righteous heart!”

The goddess, her golden hair tossed wildly, glared at Freyr.

“…Rather than you, who would harm my followers, it is Rion—struggling to strike you—that is truly strong.”

At that moment, the ground trembled. I had been on my knees, and I staggered, barely caught by Sigris.

Freyr tilted his gaze northward.

“—It seems Ymir has arrived as well.”

That name belonged to the primordial titan.

A chill slithered over my entire body.

The direction Freyr looked was at the north. The place where the Odis Temple stood.

Freyr and Rata began to retreat.

The appearance of the gods had turned the tide in our favor. This battle had probably been intended from the start only to delay us. The gods and the monsters kicked off the walls of the buildings, rising up onto the rooftops.

Their direction is the north, the same as ours.

“Everyone!”

I returned the gods to the gold coin. As I healed my aching body with White Flame, I gave chase.

If they were targeting the Odis Temple, there was only one possible target, that divine artifact!

Hazure Skill “Alarm”, jitsuwa fūin kaijo no nōryoku deshita. Ochikobore no shōnen wa, nemuri kara sameta megami-tachi to yasashī saikyō o mezasu

Chapter 130: Confrontation

The next morning, Mia-san and I headed for the harbor together.

The wind was fierce, whipping across the lake and stirring the surface into restless waves. A pure white bridge stretched all the way to Dungeon Island, and from its midpoint, the tower speared up toward the heavens.

Thick clouds, heavy enough to blot out the sun, raced across the sky at an alarming speed. The air felt damp against my skin, making me wonder if rain was about to fall at any moment. Yet in spite of the threatening weather, Flocia’s harbor was buzzing with noise and energy.

“Those crossing the bridge, this way!”

“Anyone boarding a ship, over here!”

The ones shouting orders were members of the Raven Warrior Corps. Command over the adventurers had already been entrusted to them. Apparently, the Flocia Adventurers’ Guild had issued an official request to that effect yesterday.

Even so, there weren’t enough leaders to go around. Only about thirty of the warrior corps’ members were elite enough to enter a hidden area of the dungeon.

And so—

“City defense is on this side! Don’t mix in with the others!”

A burly adventurer raised an equally massive hand as he shouted. It was Lloyd-san—one of the people who had entered the hidden area with us the day before. He and his companions had taken up positions on a raised platform, acting as field commanders. The stone hammer strapped to his back looked ominously heavy.

Adventurers gathered, moving into position to defend the harbor.

The gold coin trembled in my pocket, and Solana’s voice reached me.

『So this is the critical moment』

At her words, I nodded my head in agreement.

『For those who live here… the tower must be terrifying right now.』

“Yeah…”

Everyone gathered at the harbor wore grim expressions.

Some were preparing to enter the dungeon. Others were there to investigate the tower. And some stood ready to defend the city in case monsters should crawl out of the dungeon. Their roles differed, but they all shared the same certainty—that something was about to happen.

Countless ships were already out on the water. Part of it was to examine the bridge from the side, but it was also a precaution in case the bridge were to sink. Since it had appeared so suddenly, there was no telling when it might vanish beneath the lake again.

A clatter of chains made me turn around.

“Feels like the weather before a storm.”

It was Mia-san. The Raven Warrior Corps’ cloak—matching my own—fluttered in the wind behind her.

“I just want to get to the tower already.”

“Yeah. We need the gods to examine it one more time.”

Later, we would cross the bridge together with Felix-san and the others. A carriage for that purpose had already been set atop the bridge.

It was an enormous structure—easily a kilometer long.

The whinnying of horses made Mia-san and me pause our conversation.

Felix-san rode up, approaching us on horseback.

“May I have a moment? I have a request for you, Rion.”

Mia-san and I exchanged glances.

“We’ll be right back.”

“Got it!”

Felix-san helped me up into the saddle.

At that moment, a strange sensation washed over me. It was Felix-san, but somehow… different. Something about him felt off—unnatural, almost.

“What’s wrong?”

I asked.

“No… it’s nothing.”

We usually traveled by carriage.

Riding a horse—was this some urgent matter?

After parting from Mia-san, I was jostled by the galloping horse, my hands gripping the reins.

Felix-san spoke as he guided the mount.

“There’s someone I want you to meet.”

“Meet…?”

“An ally of Nils has been found. They wish to see you, Rion.”

I think I drew in a sharp breath. Our eyes met briefly.

I wanted to reunite with comrades I hadn’t seen in so long.

“L-let’s go!”

“Heh… yes”

Felix-san replied.

We rode on for a while. Eventually, we reached the warehouse district. And then—a feeling of unease crept over me.

“…So many people?”

Through the Blessing of the God of Hunting, the Wild Heart skill revealed it: dozens of breathing presences.

We were surrounded!?

“Wait—!”

The moment I spoke, Felix-san slammed his horse to a halt.

I was thrown forward, landing hard on the ground.

My coin pouch flew from my pocket, and I scrambled to catch it before it hit the stone.

『…This…』

Solana’s voice whispered in my mind.

We were in a square-like open space, and men—suspicious and menacing—blocked all the exits.

“It’s the presence of monsters.”

“Huh?”

From atop the horse, Felix-san laughed. It wasn’t just a laugh—it was a sneer, a chilling, utterly unsettling sound.

“Hmph… I suppose producing this much magical power makes one too noticeable. Seems I won’t be able to use this hand again.”

Frost crept across Felix-san’s body. When the frost cleared, standing there was… a slender man, dressed like a merchant.

“W-who are you…?”

The presence surrounding him felt anything but ordinary. I drew my short sword, bracing for whatever was coming.

“Perhaps you should pay attention over there first.”

The man said, gesturing with an open palm.

Across the square, from the opposite side, a familiar figure emerged.

“N—Nils-san?”

For some reason, Nils-san stared at me with an emotionless gaze. It was as if he were looking at a pebble, as though every feeling he had toward me had been stripped away and discarded.

『…There’s also the presence of a god, not just monsters.』

Solana’s voice passed through my mind, barely registering.

『Rion.』

Nils-san’s voice sounded directly inside my head.

The same way the gods had spoken to me through the coin. A chill ran down my spine.

“…Nils-san… you said you had allies—”

He tilted his chin toward the man standing behind me.

“They are my allies. I arrived in this city while receiving information from them. At that time, I still went by the name Nils and was your companion… but—”

“W-what are you saying?”

I stammered.

“Just as that man disguised himself, I too… had been wearing a mask.”

The coin in my pocket trembled, and Loki’s voice spoke sharply in my mind.

『…That voice… it’s Freyr’s.』

Freyr?

The god of fertility, sleeping deep within the dungeon?

A chill ran through me, stronger than ever. The words slipped out before I could stop them.

“…Why?”

“I am borrowing a human body for now. I dwell within the flesh of a man left behind, a shell of a body consumed and abandoned by Ymir. And—I approached you to learn about you.”

I glanced at the man atop the horse.

Is he the monster?

Nils-san’s voice echoed in my head while also reaching my ears—two layers of sound, disorienting. I could barely comprehend what was happening…

“It benefits the monsters, yes, but knowing humans was also my sister’s, Freyja’s wish.”

The coin in my pocket grew hot. This time, Thor’s voice rumbled in my mind.

『You switched sides?』

“Yes.”

『You… this does not suit you at all…!』

Nils-san drew his sword.

“I will not lose my sister. I will do whatever it takes… I will not give the goddess Freyja away.”

I faced the person who had once been my comrade. Behind me, the man on horseback laughed—loud and unrestrained.

“I told you, didn’t I? You’d sacrifice a lot. You’re a kind person, but can you fight with all your might against another brother protecting his sister?”

My sword shook. Just as my heart wavered.

The coin trembled too.

『Rion.』

Solana’s voice was hoarse, panicked. The goddess herself seemed alarmed.

『Not here. But in the city… there is an immensely strong presence there.』

“There too…?”

『Yes…! Like that tower… a presence as strong as a giant. What is happening in this city?』

Thor clicked his tongue.

『Hmph. Dividing us, damn it.』

A spark shot through my mind. This was how critical the situation had become.

『Adventurers are scattered across Lake Tower and Dungeon Island. And here we are, Rion. The enemy seeks to divide our forces.』

The river bandits around us formed a wall.

Nils-san squared his sword, eyes fixed.

“You will not pass, boy with the horn.”

Our weapon wasn’t a wooden sword like before.

This was no longer a friendly spar.

Walking, Chapter 242: Exhibition Match part 3

And so, during the lunch break of the martial arts tournament, Sue and I found ourselves behind the stage.

How did it come to this…

By the way, Shiro and the others were busy at the food stalls, not on stage.

I decided to ask the Margrave why Sue and I were being made to do an exhibition match.

“One reason is to show everyone here the strength of Shun and the others. Knowing that strong fighters are at the food stalls and the first-aid tent has a certain deterrent effect.”

The Margrave explained.

Hmm… It made sense.

If people realized that we, who interacted with them the most, were strong, some would think twice before acting foolishly.

“The second reason is to flush out any suspicious people. Even during Fran and Horn’s match earlier, there were those who weren’t watching the stage and were glancing around nervously.”

The Margrave added.

The second reason made sense, too. Anyone scrutinizing the audience like that was basically a suspicious person in the first place.

“So, I want you to put on the most impressive match possible without using any grand magic.”

“Understood. We’ll give it a try.”

Well, as long as it looks flashy, maybe a little magical sparring would do the trick. That would get the crowd excited, too.

Just as I was thinking that, Sue spoke up.

“Shun-san, I’ll be borrowing your strength for this.”

“Haha… I’m not sure how far we can go, but let’s see.”

Sue seemed a little thrilled at the idea of sparring with me. I, too, was curious to see how much she had grown since the first time we met.

With that thought in mind, Sue and I stepped onto the stage.

“And now, the exhibition match! This is a highly anticipated battle. In the red corner, an adventurer with not one but two titles, and a noble lady to boot too. The healer of the first-aid tent… Sue!”

“Wait, that girl’s really that strong?”

“Come to think of it, she sent that harassing guy at the first-aid tent flying.”

“Good luck, young lady!”

First, the Margrave’s wife introduced Sue.

Since Sue already sent a thug flying at the first-aid tent, some of the audience seemed to know just how strong she was. She waved at the crowd, looking a little embarrassed but smiling.

“And in the blue corner, the chef who created hamburgers in the southern frontier, curry in the eastern frontier, and rice balls and fruit sandwiches in the northern frontier! But he’s also an adventurer with not one but two titles. The popular stall chef… Shun!”

Murmur murmur.

Huh?

The Margrave’s wife’s introduction of me was pretty good, but for some reason, the audience was buzzing like crazy.

What’s going on? What happened?

“That guy’s a chef, right?”

“No way… he’s an adventurer?”

“I thought he was just the owner of a food stall!”

“Looks like he’s invented all sorts of dishes.”

“I’ve had his curry before—it was amazing!”

Sigh. I should have expected this. Everyone’s shocked that I’m an adventurer. Or rather, the audience seems to have firmly pegged me as just a cook.

Chapter 324: I can’t trust you at all

The next day, all eleven candidates—everyone except the Mohawk guy who had withdrawn—gathered in the lobby on time.

Examiner Randia checked his wristwatch to confirm the appointed hour, then spoke.

“Very well. We shall begin the promotion exam. As explained yesterday, the location will be the Deep Layer of the Infinite Wastelands.”

“How are we supposed to get there? I heard it takes at least a week just to reach the place.”

It was Anje who asked the question.

As she said, once you get deep into the endless wasteland, it would take days just to reach the destination.

“You are correct. However, frankly speaking, we cannot afford to spend several days on mere preparation exercises. Therefore, the deadline is forty-eight hours. You must reach the Deep Layer within that time.

From here, proceed straight north across the Wastelands. You should see a lone tower which will serve as the assembly point. If you turn back, die along the way, or fail to arrive within the time limit, you will be disqualified from the exam immediately.”

The candidates murmured among themselves.

“So that’s the first stage of the exam?”

“Oh I see… That’s how it works huh.”

“Forty-eight hours? That’s going to be incredibly difficult.”

“But… didn’t you just say it was a preparation exercise?”

Randia shook his head.

“No, no—the first stage starts from there.”

““…Eh?””

“Reaching the Deep Layer within forty-eight hours is merely a warm-up. In other words, if you can’t manage that, you won’t even be allowed to set foot at the starting line of the promotion exam. Now, even while we’re talking, a minute has already passed.”

“Wha—!?”

“It’s already started!?”

“Damn it, we need to hurry!”

The candidates rushed out of the building.

…Though really, there was no need to panic. Forty-eight hours was plenty of time—losing a few minutes was hardly significant.

“Alright, good luck guys.”

“Mm.”

“And what about you two?”

“We’ll be observing from the airship.”

“Observing…?”

Orion tilted her head, confused, and I gave her a nod.

“Yeah. With long-range observation magic, I can see you guys from afar in real time.”

“Is there really such an immoral magic like that!?”

“Ahaha, don’t worry. I’m not going to use it to sneak a look at naked bodies or anything like that.”

『You’re completely untrustworthy, Master』

(What are you talking about, Linlin? Seeing without touching—that’s practically hell, not fun.)

『…Is that so?』

A little later, Fana and the others set off as well.

Since Karen and I weren’t taking the exam, we returned to the airship. As promised, I activated the long-range observation magic, projecting the trio onto the screen in the helm.

『Why are you zooming in on their chests, Master?』

(Oops… my bad.)

The three girls sped across the desolate land.

Though they were heading along roughly the same route toward the Deep Layer, the idea of sticking together for a group finish was nowhere in their minds—they had already begun to spread out.

As expected, the fast-footed Fana quickly pulled away from Orion and Anje. Not only that, she easily overtook the candidates who had left the building before them, soaring to the very front of the pack.

“Alright, I’m going to head out for a bit.”

I told Karen.

“You’re not going to watch?”

“Nope. Those three can reach the Deep Layer without any trouble. I’ll check back when the first stage begins.”

With that, I activated teleportation magic.

My destination? Naturally—the private bath of the Edo Shogun in the Far East!

“Mamaaa! I came again to drink your milk!”

“Huh? What is this strange-looking baby?”

“W-wait… a man?!”

But the figure waiting there was a muscular man.

“Isn’t this… the Shogun’s?!”

“I am the Shogun’s husband.”

“Oh… I see. I’ll come back another time.”

I said, immediately teleporting back to the airship.

“? You’re back already?”

“Hey, Karen-oneechan, why does breast milk only come if you have a child? Wouldn’t it be great if, even without a man, milk could just come out naturally?”

“What kind of nonsense are you talking about?!”

The first to reach the Deep Layer, unsurprisingly, was Fana.

It had been roughly sixteen hours since leaving the Association headquarters. The hour was well into the dead of night.

“… a tower” she murmured.

A faint light glimmered in the darkness ahead. As she drew closer, she realized it was emanating from an artificially constructed tower.

Entering through the doorway, she found Examiner Randia waiting.

“You’ve arrived already? Remarkably quick. You’re the undisputed first to reach here,” he said.

“…Already ahead of everyone else?”

“Haha, of course, I did not run here myself. But you must be tired. There are rooms upstairs where you may rest, so please make use of them.”

According to Randia, the tower had once served as the dwelling of a demon tribe that controlled part of the Wastelands.

“There are other structures like this scattered throughout the Wastelands. Besides these tower-type buildings, there are pyramid-shaped, columnar, and even underground bunker types. Quite fascinating, really.”

About three hours after Fana arrived, the second candidate, Anje, reached the tower. The sky had begun to lighten slightly by then.

“You’re remarkably fast.”

Fana remarked.

Thirty minutes later, the third candidate, Orion, arrived, completing the trio.

“Three arriving before dawn… This promotion exam is shaping up to be rather promising.”

Randia said with a hint of anticipation.

Walking, Chapter 241: Exhibition Match part 2

“Alright—here we go!”

“Okay!”

Whoosh—bang bang!

“T-this time it turned into a high-speed hand-to-hand battle! Fran and Horn are racing all over the arena, front to back, left to right!”

“F-fast!”

“W-what’s with that movement speed?!”

Fran and Horn abandoned magical combat and shifted into hand-to-hand fighting. Both of them activated physical enhancement, tearing across the stage as if it were too small to contain them. From the audience’s perspective, Fran and Horn already look incredibly fast—but in reality, Shiro and Ao are still much, much faster.

“Hmm… it looks like Fran and Horn are just playing around.”

“No, no—that’s an insane way to play.”

Even Sylvia-san stared in amazement at their movements. She had only started training with them yesterday, after all, so she clearly wasn’t used to just how fast they could move yet.

“Shall we switch to this next?”

“Got it.”

Clang, clang, clang, clang.

“N-now they’ve pulled wooden swords out of their magic bags—and they’re trading blows at high speed again!”

“That’s good! Do it! Do it!”

“Hahaha… this is incredible.”

This time, they’re trading blows with wooden swords. Still, it’s really nothing more than rapid-fire striking—no refined sword technique to speak of. But the spectators, now used to the sheer speed of the two fighters, are completely fired up, showering Fran and Horn with cheers.

From the outside, it looks like an incredible spectacle, after all.

Beep beep beep, beep beep beep.

“Time’s up. That’s enough.”

“Oh, it’s over already?”

“That’s it for now.”

And with that, time is up. Since it was only an exhibition match, it seems they’d set the time limit fairly short.

“Whoa—that was amazing!”

“You were so cool!”

The audience applauded, praising the two fighters for their bout. As entertainment, it had turned out pretty well.

Fran and Horn jogged off toward the wings of the stage where Shiro and Ao were waiting. Then, together with Shiro and Ao, they waved cheerfully to the crowd.

A huge round of applause rose from the spectators.

“I watched the morning training, so I kind of understood, but Fran-chan and Horn-chan are really amazing.”

“They’ve got more talent as mages than I do. As for the hand-to-hand stuff, that’s thanks to Shiro and Ao’s influence.”

Sylvia-san, too, seemed once again surprised by how strong Fran and Horn were.

Both of them had excellent aptitude, after all.

The crowd was fired up by the exhibition, and that was good enough for now.

Just as I was thinking that—

Shiro and the others came back.

“““We’re back!”””

“Did you have fun?”

“Yeah!”

Shiro and the others answered with bright smiles.

Then Shiro and Fran casually dropped a bombshell.

“They said Shun-oniichan and Sue-oneechan are going to do an exhibition match too.”

“They said it’d be at noon.”

“…Huh?”

Hey, wait a second. What are you talking about?

Now we’re supposed to do an exhibition match too?

“Ohh, so you boy is fighting as well?”

“Yeah, and that lady sent some weird guy flying yesterday, didn’t she?”

Even the customers at the food stalls, who’d overheard the conversation, burst into excitement.

At this point, backing out didn’t seem like an option anymore.

Letting out a heavy sigh, I resigned myself—and went back to cooking.

Umareta Chokugo ni Suterareta kedo, Zensei ga Taikensha datta node Yoyuu de Ikitemasu

Chapter 323: I have to withdraw

The one shouting was a tough-looking man with a Mohawk.

“No matter how I look at it… that’s clearly a baby who hasn’t even turned one yet!”

“Oh, are you talking about me? Don’t worry—I’m not the one taking the exam.”

“Oh, I see! My bad, my bad! I actually have a nephew around the same age, so I just got curious. Besides, no one under five years of adventuring experience should even be eligible for this exam!”

Apparently, he wasn’t angry at all, well, just loud.

“W-wait… a baby is talkiiiiinggggg!?”

Yeah, thanks for the expected reaction.

“Now, we’ll begin the explanation of the exam.”

Ignoring the astonished Mohawk man, Randia began to speak.

“The exam is divided into three stages: the first, second, and final rounds. Each stage has its own passing criteria. Should you fail to meet them, you will be disqualified on the spot and will not be allowed to proceed to the next stage. Please take note of this.”

Meanwhile, the Mohawk guy was losing his mind, yelling, “Wait… this is really a baby?! My nephew can barely say ‘ah’ or ‘uh’!”

Everyone else, however, listened intently, fully focused on Randia’s explanation.

“The first and second stages of the exam will take place in the Great Magical Frontier that spreads around this headquarters—the Infinite Wastelands. As you are all aware, the Wastelands are home to countless vicious monsters, and it is said that the deeper you venture into its heart, the stronger those creatures become.

The Wastelands are divided into zones: the Outer Rim, the Mid Layer, and the Deep Layer. Our headquarters lies at the very edge of the Outer Rim.

The Deep Layer… once you step into it, even S-Rank adventurers are not guaranteed to return safely.

For the exam, the first stage will take place in the Deep Layer, and the second stage will push even further—into the deepest part of the Deep Layer itself.”

While several candidates gasped, the Mohawk man still tilted his head in confusion, muttering to himself: “Wait… maybe my nephew’s development is just slow? Do babies normally start talking this early…?”

Randia continued

“The passing rates are roughly twenty percent for the first stage and ten percent for the second. Naturally, there is also a risk of death during the exam. In fact, around fifty candidates have died in past sessions.

Even if you fail, you may attempt the exam again after a year, though many are left traumatized by the experience. In reality, only about one in five of those who fail ever return to take the exam a second time.”

It was shaping up to be an incredibly dangerous exam.

The other candidates grew even more serious, their faces tightening with resolve—but the Mohawk man was so lost in thought, muttering to himself: “I’ve never dealt with a baby other than my nephew… I have no idea what to do! Damn it, I should’ve spent more time around babies!”

The explanation continued,

“Honestly speaking, there is little practical advantage in becoming an S-Rank adventurer. By the time you reach A-Rank, you should already be earning plenty, and the privileges granted by the Adventurers’ Guild are largely capped. There is little you will gain by reaching S-Rank.

Now, is there meaning in risking your life to aim for it? There is still time before tomorrow’s exam begins, so I strongly recommend that each of you reflect on this question carefully. Should you ultimately decide not to proceed, that would be a completely sensible choice. You won’t be critized if you backed out.”

The candidates listened with serious expressions, though a few couldn’t help but chuckle at how unusually frank the examiner was.

…Meanwhile, the Mohawk man was still muttering to himself, nodding and groaning as if the world depended on his thoughts.

In reality, no one here would seriously consider withdrawing. These were adventurers who had climbed to the top of their ranks—they were fearless, reckless, and utterly uninterested in money or privileges.

“I can’t help but worry about my nephew! I’m sorry, but I’m going to withdraw from this exam!”

“““…Eeh?”””

Wait, seriously!?

Hey, Mohawk guy!?

“By all means, feel free.”

Randia said with a calm smile.

With that, the Mohawk man bolted from the room with all the force of a cannon, leaving everyone else blinking in stunned silence.

“That brings the number of candidates down to eleven. The promotion exam will begin as scheduled tomorrow at 10 a.m. so please gather in the lobby by then.”

With that, the briefing concluded. As the candidates filed out of the conference room, I called out to Orion.

“Orion-niichan, I’ll return this to you.”

I pulled out the full set of orichalcum equipment once worn by Lion, the hero and ancestor of Orion, from my subspace.

When we left the Arseral Empire, Orion had entrusted it to me, saying, “If I keep this, I’ll rely too much on its power—so please hold onto it for me.”

“I think you could easily draw out all its power right now.”

Orion hesitated for a moment, then shook her head.

“No. I want to get through this exam without relying on it. If I pass, it will mean I’ve truly become someone worthy of this equipment. Only then can I wear it again with confidence.”

“I see… Got it. Good luck, Orion-niichan. …Oh, right. Actually, I did use it once—temporarily took an adult form and wore it while naked, so, uh… sorry about that.”

“W-what!? What does that even mean!? That’s way too much information at once that I can’t even process it!”

Walking, Chapter 240: Exhibition Match part 1

With Ao’s match finished, I thought Shiro and the others would come back here—but it looked like the Margrave was talking to them. Or rather, it seemed he was addressing Fran and Horn.

What on earth were they doing?

Then, Fran and Horn climbed onto the stage.

The Margrave’s wife picked up a microphone-like magical device.

“Due to the delayed arrival of the next match’s participants, we will begin an exhibition match here!”

“Woooah!”

Eh? Why was there suddenly an exhibition match with Fran and Horn?

Fran and Horn waved at the audience, clearly enjoying the attention.

“Don’t worry—the players for the second match have arrived. They were just… running late.”

“““Hahaha!”””

Oi, who’s the idiot that overslept?

Looking closer, I saw a swordsman near the stage, panting heavily. And… wasn’t he the opponent of that suspicious mage?

Well, that settles the next match, then.

“In the red corner: the little stall assistant from the food stand. Actually, a five-year-old adventurer with a title—Dragoneut, Fran!”

“Yay!”

“Wait… the little stall assistant?”

“She’s a titled adventurer at only five years old?”

The crowd murmured in surprise at the Margrave’s wife’s introduction of Fran.

Of course, no one would expect a five-year-old to be a titled adventurer. Fran, for her part, cheerfully waved to the audience with all her energy.

“In the blue corner: the healer from the medical tent. Also five years old, and a titled adventurer—Angel, Horn!”

“H-hello.”

“That little girl is a titled adventurer too?”

“Come to think of it, she knocked that flirt away with magic yesterday.”

The crowd buzzed again upon learning that Horn also held a title.

Horn waved timidly at the audience.

“Both contestants will engage in magical-enhanced hand-to-hand combat, so we will activate the magical barrier device.”

“Yeah! Let’s go!”

As preparations for the match began, the spectators settled down and focused, eagerly anticipating the fight.

The magical barrier device was activated, and everything was ready.

“Then, the exhibition match—begin!”

“Let’s go, Horn.”

“Yeah, Fran-chan.”

Chuuin.

“Whoa! Both contestants are already gathering incredible amounts of magical energy!”

“W-what’s happening?”

“The little girls are charging up some insane magic!”

Seriously, both Fran and Horn were immediately concentrating their magical power.

The audience was shocked, and so was I.

“Here we go—!”

Boom! Kaboom!

“W-what!? Water and holy magic just collided! There’s a massive explosion in the center of the stage!”

“Whoa—the shockwave reached over here!”

“Will the magical barrier hold?”

The flashy clash of magic had the audience growing nervous.

…Wait, hadn’t the magical barrier created by the protective device been partially shattered?

“Fran-chan, Horn-chan, no more charging or compressing your magic. It’s going to break the stage!”

““O-okay!””

“Phew…”

Naturally, the Madam had to step in, reminding Fran and Horn to hold back a little, so the rest of the tournament could continue smoothly.

When the girls raised their hands in acknowledgment, the spectators visibly relaxed, letting out relieved sighs.

Uhm, my apologies for my Fran and Horn causing so much concern.
