Walking, Chapter 203: How strong is Ao?

There was no problem with Ao participating in the martial arts tournament, but the Margrave and his wife were a little worried.

“Hmm, it’s true that Ao is not an ordinary slime, but is she really that strong?”

“We’ve been so lucky that Pearl got her as friend, so I’m worried that something might happen.”

The Margrave and his wife got a point. Ao looks like an ordinary slime, and she’s even smaller than an ordinary slime so it is no wonder that they are worried.

And so, I decided it would be best to show them just how strong Ao really is.

The morning after we finished registering for the martial arts tournament, we arranged for her to demonstrate her abilities during training.

As usual, we began with hand-to-hand combat practice. Lately, Ao had been spending all her time teaching Pearl magic, so it had been a while since her last sparring session.

“Tou! Sei! Yah!”

“S-so fast!? …Is that really how a slime moves?”

“I can hardly believe it—what an incredible speed!”

“Wow, Ao-chan, you’re amazing!”

When Shiro and Ao began their sparring match, everyone gasped in awe at Ao’s incredible speed.

The little slime moved so fast that their eyes could barely follow, and the atmosphere in the training yard grew tense with excitement.

Fina-san and Pearl watched with bright, amazed eyes as Ao darted around.

But of course, both Shiro and Ao were holding back their true strength. If they went all out, no one here would even be able to react.

“Ao usually fights on the front line. Her charges are powerful, and it can use a wide variety of magic.”

I explained.

“Its magic barrier is very tough too.”

“Just look at that. You can tell how strong it is from the way it doesn’t even flinch under those attacks.”

All of us turned to watch as Ao effortlessly blocked the spells that Fran and Horn hurled at her. The shimmering blue barrier rippled like water, scattering faint waves of light, displaying its undeniable strength.

“Eii!”

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Fran and Horn fired their spells one after another, doing their best to hit Ao. However, the little slime blocked every single blast with ease.

Even the Margrave couldn’t hide his admiration for the strength of Ao’s magic barrier.

—And like that, the early morning training session came to an end.

“Ao is still holding back a lot of its power. How was that for a demonstration?”

“Incredible. I never thought I’d see the day when a slime could overturn everything we thought we knew about them.”

The Margrave replied with a wry smile.

“Ao really is exceptionally strong. And Pearl, well, given time and training, will become just as powerful someday.”

As everyone gathered in the mansion’s dining hall for breakfast, the Margrave watched them with a thoughtful smile. He had clearly come to recognize Ao’s remarkable abilities.

Meanwhile, Ao beside Pearl, the two slimes converse in their usual bubbly way.

“Hey, what is Ao saying?”

Fina-san asked curiously.

“Hmm. She says that since Pearl is still young, she should eat lots and move around a lot. That’s how she’ll grow into an amazing slime someday.”

Shiro translated.

“That’s right. Pearl’s still a baby slime after all. She needs to eat plenty and get big!”

Fina-san giggled.

The two of them listened with amusement as Ao and Pearl continued their cheerful chatter.

It would still be a long time before Pearl became a truly formidable slime —but at this rate, that day would surely come.

Chapter 298: The most unfortunate demon

As the building shook violently, we hurried to escape from the underground passage. Once we burst out onto the surface, the soldiers who had been fighting the karakuri ninjas noticed the same disturbance and fled outside as well.

“The ground is steady out here… so the shaking was only inside the building.”

“W-what in the world is happening there!?”

Everyone stood frozen, watching in dread as the building began to collapse.

But it wasn’t falling apart merely because of the tremors. Something massive was trying to force its way up from beneath the earth. Its emergence caused the tearing of the structure to pieces.

Gogogogogogogo!!

The ground roared like a living beast, and the air itself seemed to shudder.

Soon, it appeared, pushing aside the buildings on the ground.

“H-huge!”

It was an incredibly gigantic Karakuri soldier.

It must have easily exceeded fifteen meters in length. Though humanoid, its body was proportioned to about five heads, and it held a wide sword in its right hand and a long-barreled firearm in its left.

“Kukuku… Hahahahahaha! Surprised, aren’t you!? Behold—my ultimate karakuri weapon! The Karakuri Giant!”

The booming laughter belonged to Ittosai.

Come to think of it, he’d vanished partway through the battle.

Now I saw him—seated proudly inside a control chamber built into the giant’s midsection. The area around him was sealed by a transparent wall, letting everyone witness the mastermind at the helm.

And then, from just below that compartment, another voice rang out.

“W-what is the meaning of this!? What have you done to me!?”

It was the female demon.

There, directly beneath the control chamber, another transparent barrier revealed her bound inside. Her entire body is restrained by the mechanical arms that had captured her moments ago.

“Kukuku… You are the power source for my ultimate weapon!”

“W–what!?”

“To move this colossal karakuri requires an enormous amount of energy. But as things stand, there’s no way to generate that much power at once! So I devised a solution. What if the vast magical energy possessed by demons could be converted into electricity!? Then the problem would be solved!”

The female demon stared in shock as Ittosai continued to boast proudly.

“When I modified your body, I secretly embedded a mechanism for that very purpose! You never even suspected, did you? How pitifully foolish you are, demon! Hahahaha!”

“T–that’s impossible…”

So in the end, the demon who believed she was using Ittosai had, in fact, been the one used all along.

『I can’t help but feel a little sorry for her…』

(Indeed. She might just be the most unfortunate demon we’ve ever encountered.)

Even Lindwurm and I found ourselves sympathizing with her a bit.

“Silence, you insolent humans! Don’t you dare look at me with those pitying eyes!”

The female demon shrieked, her voice was filled with rage.

But for now, our concern wasn’t the humiliated demon—it is the Karakuri Giant that Ittosai controlled.

“Ahahahaha! From up here, the proud warriors of Edo look like nothing but trash beneath my feet!” When my Karakuri engineering reaches perfection, all warfare will be waged by machines! The era of men straining their flesh in battle is finished!”

Ittosai’s laughter echoed from within the giant karakuri.

Well, back in my previous life, we had things called Magical Giant Soldier—machines quite similar to that one. The difference was that they were powered by magic, whereas this one… Ittosai managed to build one without using magic at all. That alone was astonishing.

“Hmph! Allow me to give you a little demonstration! Witness the overwhelming might of my Karakuri Giant!”

The enormous construct raised its massive sword high, then brought it down in a single, sweeping slash through empty air.

Goooooohhhhhh!!

A violent gust roared forth.

The sheer force of the wind lifted the elite Edo soldiers off their feet, hurling several of them backward through the air.

“Hahaha a! You think that was impressive? I’m not done yet!”

This time, the Karakuri Giant raised the firearm attached to its left arm. In the next instant, a glowing sphere of condensed energy burst forth. It struck the surface of the sea, detonating with a deafening roar.

BOOOOOOM!!

A towering column of water exploded skyward, and a rain of seawater came pouring down over us.

“H-how are we supposed to fight something like that…?”

“At this rate, perhaps he’s right… maybe there’s no place left for flesh-and-blood warriors anymore…”

The soldiers, armed only with blades and spears, could do nothing but stand frozen. They stared up in shock at the monstrous karakuri before them.

Walking, Chapter 202: An unexpected situation occurs

Now that the food to be served has been decided, we head to the venue, which is a short distance from the Margrave’s mansion. By the way, entry registration for the tournament would begin three weeks before the event itself.

“Many participants come to the martial arts tournament every year. The winners receive a large prize.”

“To keep the level of participants consistent, we restrict participation to those who are already strong enough.”

“Thanks to this, the matches are always heated. By the way, weapons are allowed, but killing each other is strictly prohibited.”

From what we heard from Fina-san and her bodyguard, who came along with us, it doesn’t sound like the tournament is a brutal or cutthroat event. In that case, then it should be a perfect opportunity for us to test how much stronger we’ve become.

Incidentally, Fina-san said that, as a member of the Margrave’s household, she’ll be helping out with the tournament’s organization. Some of the lord’s soldiers are apparently participating as well, though, unsurprisingly, her bodyguard won’t be joining in.

And then, the martial arts tournament grounds came into view.

“Whoa, it’s pretty big!”

“There are spectator seats, too.”

“The stage is paved with stone.”

To our surprise, the venue was actually the town’s central plaza.

Temporary bleachers had been set up, and there were also areas for people to sit and cheer. Right now, workers were busy finishing up the construction of the temporary seating. Dozens of them were moving about in the cramped space, working busily.

And in one corner of the plaza, we spotted the registration area for the tournament.

We hurried over to sign up—but then, a shocking fact was revealed.

“I’m sorry everyone, but you’re all barred from entering the tournament.”

“““Eh?! Why?”””

“Well, it’s the rules…”

An official in charge of registering explained that none of us were allowed to enter the martial arts tournament. Unconvinced, Shiro and the others confronted the man at the reception desk, but it still didn’t seem to work.

“First of all, for safety reasons, the tournament only accepts entries from those 12 years of age and older.”

“““N-no way!”””

Well… I guess that can’t be helped….

If a child were to get seriously injured—or worse, die during the martial arts tournament, it would be a huge problem.

“And furthermore, all participants must be registered adventurers with an official title. Those with one title may enter, but anyone holding two or more is ineligible.”

“What!? Then I can’t enter at all!”

Shiro exclaimed.

It seems adventurers are restricted by rank as well, and if you have more than one title, that’s another disqualifier. Shiro, who happens to meet both disqualifying conditions, collapsed in shock.

It’s unfortunate, but rules are rules.

Still, I can’t help feeling disappointed.

Then, Ao suddenly hopped up onto the registration desk and began reading the participation guidelines. With surprising dexterity, she picked up a pen with one of her tendrils and started writing something swiftly on the entry form.

“Let’s see… Participant: Ao. Seconders: Shiro, Fran and Horn.”

“So that means… Ao will be the one entering the martial arts tournament?”

“““Eh!?”””

According to what Ao had written, she would be the one entering the martial arts tournament.

But… could a slime even participate in the first place?

When I checked the entry requirements, I discovered that there was no problem at all.

The clause says: Tamers may enter with one contracted monster. However, the creature must remain under the tamer’s control at all times.

“Yes, that’s correct. Tamers are allowed to participate. In that case, their tamed creature becomes the official contestant, so the adventurer’s rank or age doesn’t matter.”

The officer-in-charge confirmed.

“Still, this seems like a bit of a loophole.”

Someone muttered.

“Indeed. It would be better to unify the qualification rules for tamers as well. But since we’ve already announced this year’s entry conditions, we’ll review it for next year’s tournament.”

It was true—there were no specific clauses regarding the tamer themselves.

A definite oversight, if you wanted to call it that.

Ao had found and slipped neatly through a loophole in the tournament’s entry rules.

“I’ve never seen a slime that reads the entry requirements and signs up on its own. Far from being under control—it’s completely autonomous. Well then, that completes your registration. If the number of participants exceeds the limit, we’ll hold preliminary matches, and announcements will be made on the day of the tournament.”

The officer said, half amazed and half amused.

“““Okay!”””

With the registration finally done, we started heading home.

“Sue-oneesama, is Ao-chan strong?”

“Ao is very strong. She practically qualifies as a titled adventurer herself.”

Sue replied with a smile.

“Wow, that’s amazing!”

Fina-san was surprised to hear from Sue about Ao’s strength.

Ao certainly wouldn’t lose to an average person unless something extraordinary happened.

“Ao, do your best.”

“I will be cheering you on.”

Fran added.

“I will be cheering you on too.”

Horn added as well.

Shiro and the others then shifted their focus to cheering for Ao.

Ao, trembling with excitement, actively responded to their cheers.

This martial arts tournament looks like it’s going to be interesting in some ways.

Umareta Chokugo ni Suterareta kedo, Zensei ga Taikensha datta node Yoyuu de Ikitemasu

Chapter 297: Honestly, it’s pretty uncool

“You blocked my oscillating sword with your ordinary sword?! Can’t believe that you really blocked it…. And you even got within range of the vibration shield!”

The female demon was surprised, but she lunged forward, thrusting her shield at Karen, who was at close range.

The air itself buzzed from the speed of its oscillation—if it struck her, it wouldn’t just bruise or crush. That shield could pulverize bone after all.

“Yagyu Shinnen-ryu—Receding Tide!”

In a flash of movement, Karen jumped backwards, dodging the shield’s attack.

“I won’t let you escape! I’ll—hmm?”

The demon stopped mid-sentence, her expression twisting in confusion.

A thin red line appeared across her forehead. Then—shhk!—blood splattered down her face.

“W-what!? Impossible…. When did she—!?”

She stared at Karen, eyes wide with shock, as realization and pain struck at the same time. Her forehead had been slashed cleanly.

The female demon didn’t seem to notice, but Karen wasn’t simply backing away. As she pulled away, she slashed at the female demon with the tip of her sword.

This was likely the result of the sword technique known as “Receding Tide”.

“Kuu… But a wound like this is just a light brush!”

“I didn’t just cut your forehead.”

“What?”

Immediately after, the shield split in half and rolled to the ground.

“Huh?!”

“I also cut that shield in half.”

To be precise, when Karen sliced through the shield, her blade had merely continued through—and in the same motion, split the female demon’s forehead open.

Still, the truth was plain to see: that demon woman is a weakling.

Since my reincarnation, I’ve run into quite a few demons, but this one was without a doubt the weakest of them all. Perhaps that weakness was exactly why she’d longed to be stronger—why she’d gone so far as to rely on karakuri augmentations.

Most demons would rather die than accept a human invention. After all, their pride simply wouldn’t allow it.

“Y-you bastard…! Very well then—let me show you my true power!”

With a shriek, the female demon spread her legs wide—then both limbs twisted and reshaped, transforming into long, gleaming blades.

I was just wondering how she intended to move like that when the blades began to spin at tremendous speed. Her body lifted off the ground, hovering in midair, carried by the whirling metal.

“It’s a bamboo-copter, isn’t it?”

“When combined with the wings on my back, it allows me to move much faster than with two legs!”

The female demon said with a smug look on her face,

“Hm, that’s lame.”

“Yeah… Honestly, it’s pretty uncool.”

“You think so too, oneechans? I agree.”

We couldn’t help but laugh at the demon’s ridiculous appearance. I mean, I understand the concept, but I think she could have paid a little more attention to the visuals.

“Is that so? I don’t think it’s that bad, but…”

There was one samurai who didn’t seem to get it.

“Argh! You bastaaards… I’ll kill you!”

The female demon’s face was red with rage. It seemed she was a little concerned about her appearance, as she was extremely angry.

“Yagyu Shinnen-ryu: Thunderbolt”

“…Eh?”

Karen seized the opportunity to attack. Severing one of the wings from the female demon’s back, she dashed past her side.

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh!?”

Having lost one of her wing, the female demon seemed to have lost her balance, flying around the room in a spiral. She crashed into the floor and ceiling multiple times before finally coming to a stop.

“Hahaha, how lame.”

“You braaaat!”

The female demon cried out loudly, but was now unable to even move properly.

No, she could have at least taken some precautions, such as growing new wings to deal with situations like this.

“You are a weakling after all.”

“Mm. I wanted to fight someone with a bit more substance.”

“I won’t forgive you… You mere mortals have insulted me… I’ll never forgive you!”

And then…

Suddenly, a Karakuri arm reached out, breaking through the sliding door at the back of the room.

And it wasn’t just one or two. More than ten arms rushed towards the female demon.

“W-what is this!?”

The female demon’s entire body was restrained by the Karakuri arms. Given her state, it was clear she hadn’t anticipated this, but she was dragged along and taken to the other side of the sliding door.

“What on earth is going on?”

Gogogogogogo!!

“Is it an earthquake!?”

Suddenly, there was a violent tremor, causing the ceiling and walls to creak and creak.

“This… this doesn’t seem very good. We’d better get out of here immediately.”

Isekai Nonbiri Sanpo Tabi

Walking, Chapter 201: Let’s create new product

Once the food distribution was finished, we gathered in the courtyard of the frontier lord’s mansion. Of course, the reason was to develop the main dish that would be served at the upcoming martial arts tournament.

“It would be ideal if it were something people could eat while holding in their hands.”

The Margrave suggested, giving us our first guideline.

With that in mind, we started narrowing down our ideas. One dish was quickly decided—slime-baked food a.k.a Slime’s pancake. Since the region was famous for its local fruits, it would be a waste not to use them.

And so, we turned to Ao for assistance.

“Wow, amazing! So many cooking tools are coming out!”

“Ao’s got an item box.”

Shiro spoke proudly.

“My my, what an incredible slime.”

The Margrave murmured in awe.

“And to think it’s skilled at cooking too. Pearl dear, you’ll have to work hard to keep up.”

The Madam added with a smile.

Shiro puffed out her chest, clearly proud, and she wasn’t wrong—Ao really is an extraordinary slime.

Ao slid up to the magic stove, laid out a smooth iron griddle, and began preparing the batter for the Slime’s pancakes, mixing the ingredients together with practiced, fluid motions.

Sizzle, sizzle.

“Oh, that smells so good!”

“Ao’s pancakes are always super tasty!”

“We’re putting peaches in this one too!”

Both Fina-san and the household attendants watched Ao’s cooking with rapt attention. The recipe itself was simple enough—but watching a slime cook is a spectacle in its own right.

When the golden pancakes were done, Ao gently sandwiched slices of the northern frontier’s famed peaches and a layer of jam between them.

“Mm, this is excellent.”

“It doesn’t dirty the hands, either.”

“Children can enjoy it too. And it’s a wonderful way to promote our region’s produce.”

The slime panakes were clearly a success.

“Delicious!”

“Yummy!”

“So sweet!”

A chorus of cheerful voices rang out as Fina-san and the others beamed with delight, happily munching on their portions.

Even Sue had slipped into the group and was nibbling away, grinning as if to confirm that there were no issues with the flavor.

“Shun, what are you going to make?”

Fina-sann asked, tilting her head.

“Just wait a moment.”

I answered with a smile. I wasn’t planning on making anything too fancy this time.

I did have one little highlight in mind though.

“First up is the usual standard sandwich, but we’re going to change up the filling a bit.”

I started with a hearty version. Thick slices of meat, marinated in curry sauce before grilling.

Sizzle, sizzle…

“The meats are from two kinds of game—wild fowl and orc.”

 I explained.

“Oooh, that smells amazing!”

Everyone chimed in at once.

The aroma of curry wafted through the garden, rich and spicy enough to make anyone’s stomach growl.

“As for the second one, it’s a fruit sandwich. Since we’re here, it would be a waste not to use your local specialties.”

“My, I never knew such sandwiches existed.”

The Margrave’s wife said, intrigued.

“Shun, you always bring us something unexpected.”

The Margrave added with a chuckle.

We didn’t have whipped cream, so I used buttercream instead. But with the fruit’s quality—ripe, fragrant, and specially sweet—it more than made up for it.

The Margrave and his wife watched with keen interest as I layered the bright slices between soft bread.

Then came the main event.

“Oh! It’s onigiri!”

 Shiro exclaimed, her eyes sparkling.

““Onigiri?“”

The others echoed in unison, looking puzzled.

They leaned closer, clearly curious about the mysterious food taking shape in my hands.

Holding up a freshly shaped triangle of rice, I explained,

“This is called an onigiri—a rice ball. You press the rice into shape, and you can put fillings inside to change the flavor. Or you can keep it simple with just salt.”

“How fascinating. It pairs nicely with a stronger seasoning, doesn’t it?”

“Mm. Onigiri could serve as a supply ration as well. We already import rice from the western frontier. This would be quite practical.”

Both Sue and the Margrave seemed pleased with the taste, though the latter’s mind was already racing ahead to logistics and military efficiency.

As expected of a frontier lord, I thought with a wry smile.

“I kept it simple. What do you think?”

“It’s simple indeed. Yet it allows for countless variations in flavor. Especially the fillings—you’ve given my chefs something new to experiment with.”

“I, on the other hand, am quite taken with the fruit sandwich. It would be perfect for women and children at the tournament.”

With both of them offering such favorable reviews, I could finally breathe easy.

These recipes were simple enough that there was no need for detailed instructions—anyone could make them.

“Shun, you’re amazing. I’ve never seen food like this before!”

“Of course!” Shiro chimed in proudly.

“Shun-oniisan is a super cook!”

Sue nodded in agreement.

“He really does come up with the most creative dishes.”

I smiled awkwardly at their praise.

“Thanks… but just to be clear, I’m a healer, not a chef.”

Still, I couldn’t help but feel a little proud as they all bit into the food with happy smiles on their faces.

Hazure Skill “Alarm”, jitsuwa fūin kaijo no nōryoku deshita. Ochikobore no shōnen wa, nemuri kara sameta megami-tachi to yasashī saikyō o mezasu

Chapter 103: The Hound and the Rabbit

A woman working at the Flocia Trading House was in truth a collaborator of the slave traders.

Their connection began two years ago.

The woman possessed what people called a “useless skill”—a talent so weak it was deemed useless. Because of that, the nobles within the trading company had treated her poorly, dismissing her worth. Her resentment had festered for years… until a man calling himself the Shrewd Merchant approached her.

His offer had been simple—and irresistible. The cooperation would more than double her income. On top of that, she’d be allowed to use her skill for a side business of sorts. She had been hired at nineteen and had worked for over five years since then. The bitterness of being branded a failure had long since etched itself into her heart.

So when the slave traders’ payments began to flow, and her betrayal turned into a quiet form of revenge against the company that had scorned her, she felt no guilt—only satisfaction.

That was why, when an urgent report arrived in the middle of her peaceful lunch break, it took every bit of restraint she had not to click her tongue in irritation.

“They caught some bandits by the river!”

“Oh? And what’s that got to do with the company?”

“Apparently, they were carrying one of our adventurer’s tokens. Might’ve been stolen, but the guards are coming to check it out just in case.”

“I heard they were the river bandits who’ve been attacking villages upstream…”

The moment she heard that the guards were coming, the woman’s expression stiffened. It didn’t take her long to realize what had happened. The man who was supposed to receive a “message” from the company with the adventure token had been captured. Worse, it seemed he’d already talked about the company.

The bandit wouldn’t have known about her—the company’s inside contact—but the very fact that the guards were on their way to her workplace was enough to make the woman’s stomach twist. Years of petty crimes had made her quick to panic.

I need to retrieve the magic stone.”  Those were her immediate thought.

The item exchanged via the adventurer’s token is a magic stone with message magically engraved on it. And in times like this, recovering that message was part of her job.

The woman heads to the vault.

The section that stored goods meant for exchange through the adventurer’s tokens was more loosely managed than the rest. The Adventurers’ Guild frowned upon merchants and adventurers trading directly, so the system of adventurer’s tokens—something that could strengthen that connection—was kept deliberately small in scale.

Keys to the materials used for Adventure tokens are kept separate for each box. The woman borrowed a key from her superior, saying she would open another box. However, with her nimble hands, she also snatched the key to the slave trader’s box from the shelf.

Her quick work, thanks to her <Thief> skill, went unnoticed by her colleagues and superiors, who believed it to be a useless skill.

Even in her panic, she felt a flicker of smug satisfaction.

The woman opened a box in the vault and breathed a sigh of relief.

Suddenly, she sensed a presence behind her.

“Ah!”

Several rats jumped down from above. The creatures darted straight for the box, shoving their heads inside. Then—just as the woman reached for the magic stone inside the pouch—it slipped from her grasp and fell to the floor.

One of the rats seized the pouch’s drawstring in its teeth and bolted for the exit.

“S-stop!”

She felt terrified. They usually contained an important message after all. The woman didn’t know the details, but there was no way she could get away safely after losing it.

Suddenly, she remembered a slave trader she had met only once. That hulk like man had been staring at her when she was granted the <Thief> skill. She recalled those starving eyes, the look he gave that time was like he was holding back from eating her alive and was forced to watch his food go free.

—When I’m no longer useful… he’ll devour me.

It was only a fleeting thought, yet the fear that came with it dulled her reason even further.

“Damn it!”

The rats ran out the back door, round the corner, and down an increasingly lit road. When they ran out of breath, the beasts finally stopped. The pouch containing the magic stone rolled to the ground. It was picked up by a young boy.

◆◆◆

The God of Hunting , Uru, had called this method a hunt.

The bandit who was supposed to receive the magic stone had been captured—and that information was deliberately leaked to the trading company. The collaborator, believing the goods was compromised, would likely move to retrieve the message hidden in the vault.

The key was to mention the word “token” and to make them believe the city guards were already on their way. In other words, force them to panic—make them take the magic stone out of the vault on their own.

“…It really worked.”

“Told you.”

Uru, looking quite pleased with himself, gave a sly little wink. In his small, childlike form, he waved lightly at the rats sniffing around the corner of the alley.

“Of course, it wouldn’t have worked without their help.”

Uru added with a grin.

Uru is a deity of nature—one who could ask the trees, the beasts, even the smallest creatures for aid. This time, it was the rats who had answered his call.

A sulky voice echoed in my head—Loki clearly displeased at having his moment stolen.

『Eh, whatever. We gods could’ve slipped in ourselves if we wanted to. But then again, if something like Alvis’ golem core reacted to divine energy, that’d be a real pain. Using animals as intermediaries—yeah, I’ll admit, it’s a clever, harmless trick.』

Urubrushed back his braided hair, looking quite proud of himself.

“Fufu… Rion, it’s your turn now.”

His form began to fade into the air, dissolving like mist.

“Truth be told, I was this close to granting you a new power for this little hunt. But… it seems your mindset isn’t quite there yet, hm?”

I was about to ask again. But thinking about it, that wasn’t the time. I tucked my chin in and looked straight ahead.

The woman I was facing was a woman a little over 20 years old. She was out of breath, probably from running. A group of raven warriors were blocking the exit to the back alley.

“Tch.”

The woman clicked her tongue and readied her knife.

Her eyes were wide, and she looked frightened of something.

“Surrender. I don’t think you can… beat me.”

The woman raised her eyes.

“I-I’m no ordinary woman!”

Her body glowed faintly. A skill had been activated. The knife she had thrown head straight for me.

“Tsu”

I drew my dagger and shot down the attacker’s throwing knife. The woman drew another blade and attacked me. I twisted my body to avoid the attack and grabbed her outstretched arm with my left hand. I pulled with all my might, then I swept her leg away.

“Wha…?”

The woman’s cheek hit the ground with a thud. The fight was over in an instant.

“H-Help…”

The woman looked up and groaned. She seemed afraid of something.

Mia-san’s eyes sharpened, her voice became serious.

“Rion. Stay alert.”

“Yes, but…”

She really did look frightened—not because of us, but because of something else. Of course, I would not let her go now. But I guess, pitying her was a bit naive of me….

“It’s all right. As long as you’re willing to talk… that’s enough.”

The woman’s eyes fluttered shut, as if in relief.

The raven warriors arrived, leading a carriage. We helped the woman inside, and at last, I could exhale. It might have been a rather forceful method, but—we’d secured the magic stone, and another of the slave traders’ collaborators was now in custody.

『Rion!』

“.….Y-yes!”

Urged by Solana, I held the magic stone up into the sky.

The result was just as we had predicted. The magic stone I obtained was a special one, it’s engraved with a magical message.

“The power of the sun will remove the bewilderment cast by the monsters!”

The sunlight shone on the stone. Letters began to appear on the surface of the egg-sized magic stone.

“East District, Temple Parish, April… That’s today’s date and the location.”

I gasped. Felix-san peered into the magic stone and put his hand to his chin.

“Hmm. It appears… this is the slave trader’s next transaction. I believe the slave will be handed over here.”

Mia-san grimaced at my deduction and scratched her head.

“Surely it doesn’t include the location of their headquarters?”

“Yes. However, it’s an elaborate message. There’s a high chance that it’s an important transaction or something big will come up.”

We exchanged glances.

It would provide a clue to the enemy targeting Lu. Above all, it was obviously best to stop the buying and selling of kidnapped people. It would mean that a disaster like that of Nils’ sibling could happen again somewhere.

I naturally straightened my back.

“Let’s go, Felix-san, Mia-san.”

Our next move is happening tonight.

We’ll expose the enemy’s base —and stop the slave trade.

Hazure Skill “Alarm”, jitsuwa fūin kaijo no nōryoku deshita. Ochikobore no shōnen wa, nemuri kara sameta megami-tachi to yasashī saikyō o mezasu

Chapter 102: Hidden Message

For now, we head outside the noisy trading post.

There is a possibility that the enemy has hidden a message here. If we can find it, we might be able to find the slave traders’ base or the date and time of their next trade. The corner where the three of us hid was only a few dozen meters away from the trading post. But there were far fewer people around. This made it easier to hold a strategy meeting.

Mia-san was the first to speak, leaning her back against the wall.

“So basically, it’s a message engraved with magic, right?”

She crossed her arms, shaking the chains.

“Is that even possible?”

“Yes, research is being done for it. For example, unlike regular letters, the message won’t appear unless the sender knows a ‘password’ and there are various ways to devise it. Right now, the most promising idea is―”

Felix-san looked at me.

“It’s about engraving messages into magic stones. It’s still in the research phase back in the kingdom, but… it’s possible the slaver traders have already learned to use it.”

Mia-san added.

I recalled the faint glow I’d detected with my magic sense.

“Uhm… the object was about the size of an egg.”

“Then a magic stone seems most likely.”

Mia-san concluded. She ran a hand through her red hair, gripping it in thought.

“Should we bring Safi?”

I asked.

Safi, the blacksmith, had gone ahead to the temple to prepare—setting up her tools, sharpening stones, and all the other gear she might need to assist us later.

Mia-san shook her head.

“Not yet. It’s too soon for that. First, we need to get our hands on that message.”

Felix-san, who’s standing beside us, touched his chin thoughtfully. His eyes narrowed, glinting like needles. Of the three of us, he’d spent the most time chasing slaver traders. He knew their tricks, their habits, and their trails better than anyone.

“I can’t say for certain.… But if the message really is engraved on a magic stone, then it’s very likely they’re using the trading system of the merchants’ guild to exchange it.”

He glanced between us, then continued.

“The adventurer’s token I explained earlier was originally designed to help busy merchants trade with adventurers. When you present it, the guild hands over the requested item on the merchant’s behalf. And if that item happens to contain a magic stone with a hidden message—”

Mia-san snapped her fingers. Snap.

“—Then no one would think twice about it, because the recipient is an adventurer.”

Felix nodded.

“Exactly. They’re using the guild’s system to avoid the risk of meeting face-to-face.”

Even though it was the enemy’s trick, I couldn’t help but be impressed.

It felt strange, knowing that monsters are using human systems to communicate.

“There’s a clever mind behind this. Whether it’s a monster or a human working with them, I couldn’t say.”

I thought for a moment. Knowledge like this—how to twist systems and rules to your advantage—was also a kind of power.

“Felix-san, does that mean the merchants won’t hand over the magic stone without the token?”

He gave a single, short nod.

“That should be the case.”

If the token really worked like a voucher, then it was hard to imagine there being more than one of the same kind.

Felix-san opened both hands and showed them to me.

“The river bandits didn’t seem to have it either. Unless they threw it away, it’s likely they hadn’t received the token yet.”

Mia-san curled her lips.

“What a roundabout way to do things.”

Felix gave a wry smile.

“And thanks to that, we’re the ones left to deal with the trouble.”

I swallowed hard. Thinking about it, the slaver traders had always been one step ahead of us. But now, finally, we were starting to trace the movements of the people who had attacked me—and Lu.

It was only the faintest lead, but still… it’s a start.

Felix-san went on, his tone calm but deliberate.

“From my experience, there’s probably an accomplice inside the trading company as well. It’s a well-crafted system, but they’d still want a capable person on the inside—someone that will handle unexpected problems. Well, a maintenance worker, I should say.”

“Then that means we’ll need to be extra careful.”

Mia-san muttered. Felix-san glanced at me, a small, reassuring smile tugging at his lips.

“That’s right. This is also a good opportunity to capture this ally. I’d rather capture them than let them get away with it.”

I took a deep breath.

I closed my eyes and tried to process the situation.

“We don’t have a voucher that will grant us the magic stones. So, one option would be to use the name of a warrior group and force them to show us the warehouse—but if we do that…”

“The accomplice would interfere.”

Felix-san finished my words.

Mia-san scratched her red hair. After tilting her head several times, her eyes became glazed.

“Then.…. Aren’t we completely cornered?”

“In truth, if we make a fuss, their accomplice in the trading post will be alerted. If they destroy the magic stone with the message and then go into hiding, we’ll be back to square one.”

After Felix-san finished speaking, everyone fell silent.

It was at that moment that the gold coins began to vibrate.

『We heard you, Rion.』

After Solana’s voice was heard, the gods all spoke.

『Ha! So it’s a battle of wits now, eh?』

『It’s getting interesting too!』

『Everyone, stay cautious.』

Then, among the chatter, a refreshingly calm voice rose above the rest.

It was Uru, the God of Hunting.

『Scouts and vanguards always find creative ways to communicate. Tell me, how do you think a hunter handles this kind of situation? When the prey’s holed up and refuses to come out?』

For a moment, I could almost see him—his brown hair tousled, his grin sharp as a blade.

『He sets the hounds loose!』

That was the hint given to me.

The image flashed through my mind: a rabbit startled by barking dogs, bolting from a hidden burrow through a different exit.

“Ah…!”

I voiced the thought as it came to me.

And this time, both Mia-san and Felix-san snapped their fingers in agreement.

Walking, Chapter 200: Soup distribution in the Northern Margravate

So, our schedule is to study in the morning and take on easy requests in the afternoon. This afternoon, we’ll be heading to the church to provide a soup kitchen.

“Pearl’s going to help with the healing, too, huh?”

“Yes. Today is Pearl’s healing debut!”

Fina and Pearl will be taking part in the free healing that will be held in conjunction with the soup kitchen. She’s very excited to be able to provide healing alongside her new friend, Pearl.

By the way, I’ll be preparing the soup kitchen. Sigh. I wonder when I’ll be able to provide healing service as a healer though.

Well, that’s enough complaining now, let’s get on with preparing the soup kitchen.

Today I’ll be making a simple stir-fry of vegetables.

Swish, swish, swish!

“Waaah, that’s amazing!”

“The slime’s cooking!”

“It’s slicing vegetables with magic—so cool!”

The air was filled with the excited voices of children.

As always, the center of everyone’s attention was Ao’s dazzling display of culinary magic. With graceful precision, Ao manipulated her magic, levitating vegetables in midair and slicing them apart in a flurry of motion.

Each flash of the glowing knife danced through the air with a crisp swish. The rhythm is so quick and mesmerizing that the gathered children could hardly blink. To them, it wasn’t just cooking. It was a full-blown performance.

As for me—

I’d been strictly reminded by the Margrave himself to “keep it modest.” Apparently, if the food was too delicious, it wouldn’t count as a simple charitable meal.

So I kept things simple this time. Just a plain, humble soup.

That’s right.

It’s absolutely nothing more than ordinary soup.

“““It’s so good!”””

“…Hmm. This is a bit too tasty for a soup kitchen’s dish, isn’t it?”

“Couldn’t you make it… a little worse?”

“Eh—!? That….”

As the children laughed and reached out for seconds, I could only let out a helpless sigh and smile.

Shiro and the other members of the tasting team enjoyed the samples very much. However, the Margrave and Margrave’s wife criticized them for being too tasty.

Uhm… it’s okay for it to be a little tastier, right?

In the end, they decided to add some water to make it a little less flavorful.

I suppose they’ll have to make do with this for now.

“How is it?”

“Much better, thank you. Fina-sama’s slime is truly remarkable.”

“Ehehe, thank you!”

Meanwhile, at the treatment station, Fina and Pearl were in the middle of a small miracle.

Fina was already well loved by the townsfolk, but seeing her heal people alongside Pearl with a smile on her face, it had lifted their opinion of her even higher. The gentle light of her magic, the soft voice with which she spoke to each patient—it all seemed to melt away the exhaustion of the crowd.

The line of people waiting stretched farther than I could see.

Even Sue and Horn were running back and forth, doing their best to tend to everyone in need.

“Here you go.”

“Take care, all right?”

The sound of healing spells and grateful voices blended together, filling the square with a quiet warmth.

At the distribution station, Shiro and Fran were busy handing out stir-fried vegetables, soup, and bread. Apparently, the townsfolk were raving about the stir-fry made by the slime.

I nearly collapsed, thinking, “My soup has nothing to do with it.”

“Seems like the food distribution is going smoothly enough.”

“Yes, yes. Everything looks fine. Oh, I know—why don’t we have Shun make the featured dish for the martial arts tournament?”

“That’s a good idea. Let’s have him come up with something that’ll outshine the southern and eastern frontier domains.”

“Eeeeh!?”

And with that merciless declaration from the frontier lord and his wife, I really did collapse this time.

I’m a healer, not a chef!

Fina-san and Sue, meanwhile, were looking on with bright eyes, saying they couldn’t wait to see what kind of dish I’d come up with.

For the time being, the food distribution had gone off without a hitch.

Umareta Chokugo ni Suterareta kedo, Zensei ga Taikensha datta node Yoyuu de Ikitemasu

Chapter 296: If you want proof, here it is

I thought she was a kunoichi, but she turned out to be a female demon.

Tsk. Give me back my expectations!

『…..You got your hopes up on your own and then now you are disappointed?』

Ignoring Lindwurm, I asked,

“By the way, what happened to that Hattori Hanna, the kunoichi?”

“You mean that foolish little girl? I killed her long time ago.”

So, the real kunoichi had already been killed. The ninja organization had been taken over by this demon huh.

“Why did you take over? And why go so far as to have your own body converted into a karakuri?”

The female demon answered my question with a look of ecstasy on her face.

“It’s all to prepare for his resurrection.”

“His resurrection?”

“I’m talking about the supreme being who was once hailed as the king of demons! I heard he was killed by loathsome humans, but in fact he’s secretly surviving, waiting for the right time to be resurrected!”

What a rare type of demon.

Demons generally don’t form groups after all. In fact, demons often don’t get along with each other —infighting and killing their own kind was practically a pastime to them.

Well, humans had wars too, but even so, humans still had more sense of cooperation than the demons did.

And then the female demon spoke the name of the one she worshiped.

“Alzazeil-sama, the Demon King! The knowledge of these karakuri that I have obtained shall surely aid you in reclaiming your rightful dominion over this world!”

I can’t help but pause.

“Uh-, yeah? About that, Demon King Alzazeil already came back recently—and I defeated him.”

“…Huh?”

For a moment, the female demon simply stood there, dumbstruck. Then—

“Ha… ha-hahahaha! You defeated the glorious one? Don’t make me laugh!”

“It’s true. I’m the one who did it.”

“Do you mean to mock him, you bastaard?!”

With a roar, the demon unleashed her mana. The surge of power was so overwhelming that a normal human would’ve fainted on the spot.

Of course, I remained perfectly calm as I reached into subspace and pulled something out.

“If you want proof, I’ve got it right here.”

It was the Demon King’s heart.

Thump, thump. Even though it is sealed under layer upon layer of powerful restraints, it pulsed steadily, as if still alive.

“~~~~~!!?”

The female demon’s eyes widened in shock.

“This magical power… No way…. for real?!”

“I’m telling you it’s true.”

“Give it to meeeeeeeeeeeeee!!”

The female demon screamed and leaped at me. At the same time, the back of her costume ripped, revealing her wings. They looked very similar to the wings of an insect, and were probably some kind of mechanism.

The female demon flapped her wings at high speed, accelerating forward.

—However, a samurai girl stood in her way.

“Yagyu Shinnen-ryu — Thunderbolt!”

Karen unleashed a slash, striking the female demon’s torso from the side.

“Uh?! Guaaaahhh?!”

Perhaps she was so enraged that she couldn’t see anyone else but me. The female demon took the hit head-on and was sent flying, crashing into the wall.

“Well, to be honest, you seem like a pretty weak demon, so I don’t think I’ll even need to do it myself. I think it’ll be good training for Karen-oneechan.”

“You bastaaaaaard! Are you mocking meeeeeee!?”

Further enraged, the female demon transformed her arms. Her right arm transformed into a sword, and her left arm into a shield.

A “Uiiiiiiiiiin” sound echoed around. Looking more closely, the sword and shield were vibrating minutely but at an incredible speed.

“This is a special sword that achieves incredible cutting power by vibrating at high speed!”

The female demon lightly swung her sword, and a nearby wall was cut through as if it had cut through air.

“And this shield, by vibrating at high speed, it can repel any attack! One carelessness and your own weapon will shatter before it even touches me!”

“What an intriguing weapon. However… I do not lose.”

“You insolent human girl! If you dare stand in my way, I’ll carve you into a thousand bloody pieces!”

With a furious roar, the female-type demon flapped her karakuri wings, closing the distance in an instant. Her vibrating blade echoed through the air, splitting the wind itself as it came down toward Karen.

But Karen didn’t flinch. She couldn’t afford to block it head-on as the oscillating sword would cut through steel like butter. A reckless counterattack would only be deflected by that vibrating shield, destroying her own blade in the process.

Instead, she took a deep breath, centered her focus, and whispered,

“Yagyu Shinnen-ryu Secret Art—Battle sense.”

A deep, blue aura flared around her sword.

Come to think of it, her old master once gathered all his fighting spirit into his blade for a single strike. Apparently, this Yagyu Shinnen-ryu school had similar techniques that channeled battle aura.

A weapon imbued with aura doesn’t just hit harder, it becomes far tougher as well.

Gakiiiiiiiiiin!

Sparks exploded as the blades met.

Karen’s sword didn’t yield an inch. It had caught the demon’s vibrating blade perfectly, holding it in place as if the deadly oscillation meant nothing at all.

Walking, Chapter 199: Study time for everyone

From the following morning’s training, we began learning swordsmanship from one of the guards assigned to Fina-san. By coincidence, Fina-san herself had only recently started learning sworsmanship as well, so we all decided to begin together from the very basics.

Meanwhile, Ao was a little ways off, teaching Pearl how to use magic.

“Everyone here has excellent physical ability, but please—don’t rely on brute strength when you swing your sword.”

““““““Yes!””””””

We started with practice swings using wooden swords.

No rushing—just slow, deliberate movements.

“One… two… three… four…”

“Good, good. Don’t just use your arms—swing with your whole body.”

“Keep your lower body firm as well.”

It’s quite difficult because it feels like I’m swinging the wooden sword with just my arm. I need to practice swinging it properly for a while.

“Thank you very much. I didn’t realize even basic practice swings could be this exhausting.”

“It really was a valuable lesson.”

“As expected of adventurers—you understand the importance of fundamentals like practice swings.”

“That understanding alone is a tremendous achievement.”

Wiping the sweat from our faces with towels, Sue and I thanked the female guard who had been instructing us. We’d have to keep practicing diligently if we wanted to move on to the next stage soon.

Fina-san had gone over to where Ao and Pearl were, chatting with Shiro and the others about how their training was going. From the looks of it, Pearl’s magic lessons were progressing quite well too.

After breakfast came Fina-san’s study time.

Come to think of it, Fran and Horn had never really done any proper studying before, so we decided that everyone would join in for lessons today.

“Hmm… is this right?”

“I finished mine!”

“Oh, Horn’s got it—good work. Fran, yours is a little off here, try fixing this part.”

I began teaching Fran and Horn the basics, making sure they could at least read, write, and do arithmetic properly. Since both of them were still quite young, I took things slow, step by step.

“Sue-oneechan, I finished mine!”

“My, Shiro, you’re quick. Let’s do our best too, Fina.”

“Ugh, I won’t lose!”

To our surprise, Shiro turned out to be exceptionally good at math.

Being overtaken by someone her own age seemed to ignite Fina-san’s competitive spirit.

“Having a rival really helps you see where your strengths lie.”

“I didn’t know Shiro was so sharp, either—it’s been a great discovery for me as well.”

As I chatted with the Margrave’s wife about how everyone was progressing, I couldn’t help but think that Shiro’s quick intuition was what made her so good with numbers.

Seeing her daughter motivated by a peer, the Madam smiled with clear satisfaction.

“Since this is having such a positive influence on Fina, let’s have them continue studying together while you’re staying with us, Shun. We can add some lessons in etiquette as well.”

“I’m very grateful—thank you for the opportunity.”

Sue could probably handle teaching manners better than I could.

As for me… well, that wasn’t exactly my area of expertise.

So for now, I decided to gratefully accept the hospitality and support of the Margrave’s household.
