Chapter 14: Hypnosis

When attached to the nasal mucosa of a living creatures, the pollen of Arlaune is transformed into a substance having a hypnotic effect on the spot and is transferred to the brain. Unlike pollen itself, this substance has no effect on the immune system in the body. Most of this substance is made of magic, and the particles are considered to be very small compared to pigments in blood.

The type of truth serums used in the military is too heavy for the body so if it is used for prisoners who have lost their physical strength due to torture, it is life-threatening. However, in the case of Arlaune, it was a naturally performed hypnosis that even nourishes the living creature, it activates the body to some extent rather than burdening the body.

It’s a terrible story, but this beautiful flower survival strategy is horrifying. In the spirit world, only the nutrients obtained from the soil are sufficient, but once summoned to this world, it becomes very greedy to secure nutrients from other creatures.

However, if you sign a contract immediately after summoning it, such properties of Arlaune will not be a threat. I’ve never been in danger in studying the ecology of this spirit.

“This is … what is shining…?”

“It’s Arlaune’s pollen. As you can see, it works well in a small space. In such places, you can surely let the other party inhale the pollen. Otherwise, it is not effective. “

“Pollen… Isn’t it the one who make you sneeze when you inhale it? The season when it’s full is tough…”

By inhaling pollen, substances produced by the immune system in the body responses, causing symptoms such as sneezing or eyes and nose itching. Arlaune’s pollen does not cause an immune response, so even if we inhale it, nothing happens.

―However, it’s different for the targeted prisoners.

The expression of the woman wearing a rag clothes changed. She was now in a hollow state and she was weakened –this is a success. When it comes to hypnosis, you can only obey what Arlaune and the summoner say. I silently watch Presha-san –she nodded, shocked.

“I’m going to ask you some questions from now on, and answer them without hesitation.”

“……Yes……”

The woman who was previously stubborn and refused to speak, nodded obediently. The expression is soft and has a slight smile –for a moment I think I’m doing something seriously dangerous as a doctor.

She’s a prisoner–I’m doing hypnosis.

I asked Lendl-san to take notes in order to write down the patient’s information. I was thinking of using it since I started working at this fortress – the leather cover is stamped with “Medical record”.

The pedestal on which the prisoner’s hands are placed during torture –probably the one used to tear off her nails –is no longer needed. I used the table as a desk and spoke carefully while observing the patient carefully.

“Why did you go across the border and went to the other side?”

“… In the Zirconia Empire… we have an insider … weapon deal…”

“Don’t tell me that you sent weapons to the enemy?!! The weapons in our country were far superior to those from Zirconia!”

That would be an unforgivable fact for Presha-san but now she has to swallow her anger and listen to all of it.

“Who is your ringleader?”

“We just caught that guy and put him in another prison.”

“…The mastermind… is that man…”

“Uh…!?”

One of the prisoners of war who was already been caught was the real mastermind. In other words, the knights did not grasp the actual condition of their organization, and could not grasp the inner situation.

Presha-san confronts one of the two men but was in hypnosis and weak. At first glance, I could guess that the man about to be in his thirties was dressed in a similar fashion to the other one to prevent himself from being identified as the mastermind.

“…So what was left in that hideout was someone of lower position?”

“They are bandits … he is the leader of the bandits… I… was hired to trade weapon…”

Most of what they were doing is now clear. Perhaps the Zirconia Empire had promised them a big amount –the bandits dazzled by the amount of profit they could earn even risked crossing the border and dared to sell.

“Where did the bandits procure weapons to sell to Zirconia Empire?”

“……that is……”

“Summoner, I’m afraid there is a lot of resistance to this question. This person’s spirit is being overwhelmed. Would you like to continue asking?”

A certain resistance is maintained even during Arlaune’s hypnosis. This woman is more afraid to talk than to die. Still I have to continue.

“… Glass-sama, if you feel distressed…”

“It’s Okay… I still have to ask anyway.”

No matter how distracting the content is, we must face it.

Presha-san just looked at me without saying anything. She doesn’t ask what to do, but she knows she has no choice.

“I can’t avoid this question. Where did you get the weapon?”

Arlaune’s pollen thickened. After showing a little resistance, the light faded from her eyes and her lips moved.

“… Northern Knights… Through a member of the royal family… they give us weapons…”

―Presha-san looked up at a heaven that she could not see from the prison.

Northern Knights. For Presha-san, a knight, even if they belongs to a different group, should still be their comrade yet they sold weapons to the enemy… This fact would be unacceptable to Astina-denka and to Raquel-san once it’s relayed –the enemy is among those who they thought were their comrades.

Chapter 13: Summon

“Glass-sama…”

“Lendl-san, it’s okay.”

Lendl-san tries to stand before me –he’s trying to protect me. Holding him back, I spoke to Presha-san carefully.

“If you’re ok with any method, I can make them talk.”

“…Do you have a medicine that can be used for that purpose? You’re not a Dark Doctor are you?”

“It doesn’t matter if you say so. I found this method on my own … I can’t really say much, after all, it’s indeed a “Darkness Technique”.

I tried to talk calmly but my heart is pounding so hard that I think it will burst! Presha-san with such murderous spear… if I made a mistake, I would surely be killed in an instant.

But after she stared at me and thought of my objective, she then lifted the spear. Lendl-san, who was trying to stand before me, exhaled tremblingly. A little further, he would have made his move.

“I can kill her any time. All I need is information… Glass, if you can really do it, I’ll only watch here. But if you make a suspicious move, I’ll kill you first!”

Killing me is not that easy. Is what I think, but if I say that now, it’s pure suicide. Presha-san’s emotions are so high that she is losing her calm judgment.

She clearly didn’t trust me. Presha-san is only trying me out. Once she judged that my words are false, neither the prisoners of war nor I have any guarantee to live.

I now understand why Raquel-san told Presha-san that she should bring me back safely. Raquel-san has already anticipated this possibility…

If I looked closely, Presha-san’s age doesn’t look that much different from mine. I couldn’t feel the aloof initial impression, but her spirit still left an immature part.

“A magician who contracts with the spirit uses its power to exercise magic. The spirit influences this world by using the magic mark of the magician as its catalyst. You can even summon it.”

“…What is that? I heard you were a flop… There’s no way you can call a useful spirit…”

“No, I’m useful in this situation though I can only contribute in limited circumstances.”

I took the small leather bag out of the bag that Lendl-san had. What was in it was a bulb.

A medium is used when summoning plant spirits. There is only one kind of spirit I can call, but it can be definitely useful –because this bulb is a genus of spirits.

I put the bulb on the floor. Then I stood up and held my hands up –Presha-san looks at my actions with a suspicious look.

“What is that? Root of something… so what can it do …?”

“Please look at this. [Lustrous flower that blooms in the enchanted garden… reveal yourself in this world and show your power!]”

Two years ago, when I first tried summoning magic, I didn’t know what would appear. The summoning was a success and what was summoned was a lower spirit, but that power should definitely be of help here.

“Hmm… W-what…? This is… grass…?”

According to the chant, blue grass would start to grow around the bulb that was inside the drawn magic circle. The moment the shape made of grass is completed, the bulb will germinate, and the root will grow rapidly.

Uh… it’s different. It’s bigger than usual … Maybe because it’s in the fort ?…

In the fort, there is a human with a great magical power – Astina-Denka, but with that alone, the plant that manifested was larger than what I had summoned at the Magic Academy that should be rich in magical power…

The stems then intertwined, the leaves spread, large buds are attached, they start to swell, and they then bloomed.

“This is… a demon…?”

“No, you’re wrong. That’s the enchanted flower –Arlaune… It’s a plant spirit that has the power to influence people’s hearts.”

The flower has bloomed –the only thing I can call from the spirit world.

At the center of the open flower is a doll-sized girl. She’s the incarnation of a spirit. It was smaller when I called it earlier, and not even in a human figure, but now it’s totally different…

The little girl with a little flower on her head looked up at me, bowed, and said.

“It’s been a while, Summoner-sama. I, Arlaune, am here from the enchanted garden of Pandera.”

When making a contract with a spirit, the chant points from the spirit realm to this world. It was from the other side to this side’s sequence.

As requested by Arlaune, I placed her on my shoulder. I then felt the sensation of my magic being absorbed when I touched her –Arlaune is trying to use my own power to response to my will.

“Can you let this three people change their minds? Let them work with us and confess everything.”

“Understood. Come, let’s go… my children…!”

Along with the Arlaune’s words, the flower that she has born shines lightly and the rising pollen of the enchanted flowers wraps the prisoners in the air.

Chapter 12: Interrogation

Going to the fortress’ basement, we went down from the first floor and we could clearly hear the sound of the water flowing. It was because of the irrigation canals running underground the fortress that the moist, cold air came in.

The sewage isn’t dirty, though we can’t tell if it’s the same in the other route, but in this cold air, prisoners would surely be having hard time in the prison.

As we proceed, the sound of a stick ripping the sky and voices laced with agony from the end of the passage along the waterway could now be heard.

I could tell that Lendl-san who is only a little behind me, felt tensed. When I turned around and asked if he was okay, he nodded back.

As we approached the prison where the sound was heard, a tough looking female knight appeared from inside. It seems that she is twice older than Presha-san, but she bows as she comes out.

“We are waiting for you Presha-sama. The prisoners of war we caught the other day haven’t said anything yet…”

“Hmm, Is that so? Well then, I’ll do it. I’ll have this doctor treat them if I can’t make them talk even if I only leave them with a few breathe.”

“Huh… that guy the other day, Knight Raquel said…”

“Yes, he’s called Glass Weed. He’s a young man, but don’t look at him like you’re going to eat him ok.”

Presha-san spoke and smiled, but on the strong side – she says it’s rude, so there’s a glint of sharpness in her eyes. The middle-aged female knight on the other hand glances at me with her face dyed red.

“You’re not that baby-faced but you’re young and your face isn’t bad. If you’re not so helpful as a doctor, I’ll let you help them there ok? I like men, but I’m not as hungry like the Onee-san here.”

“N-No, I didn’t come to do that …”

“So I’m saying that everyone’s treatment to you will change depending on whether you’re useful or not. I can even try to talk to those scary Onee-sans. So, do your best, Honor student.”

I’ve never been told as honor student at the academy… It was ironic that I’m too accustomed to the unappreciated environment.

Presha-san enters the prison first, with her three-pronged spear. When she passes by the middle-aged female knight, she puts her hand on her chest to hold her back.

“It was like throwing bones on a cage full of women, that was Millenia-o, the headmaster had said yet I think things were a little different…”

I didn’t know what I could answer to Lendl-san’s whispers –the absence of a man also means that many knights are not susceptible to men. People are not the only ones to bite immediately when a man comes.

But now, more than that, the question is what Presha-san is going to do with the prisoners.

Depending on the reason why the prisoners were caught, it could be a death offense –so any torture may be given.

“Haaa… haaa…”

In the prison, there were two men and one woman in rags. Perhaps the woman had only been struck by a whip, sitting on the floor and still breathing.

The two men stayed on the floor and have no movement. It wasn’t just whipping –they seemed to have been tortured in the waterway we passed, maybe that water… the whole body is getting wet, the body temperature is lost, and the skin loses its energy.

“Tsk!…as always, these men faint first. It would be a big mistake if you thought you could be at ease without spitting anything. Oiii, get up! If you don’t wake up, I’ll only ask this child then.”

The two men didn’t respond. They have not truly fainted –I could see that they were holding their breaths.

The two have already been pushed to the utmost torture. Still, they wouldn’t speak anything and now they’re trying to sacrifice the fellow woman to avoid further torture.

A metal pedestal was placed inside the prison –it was prepared for further torture. Presha-san placed the woman’s hand on the pedestal while displaying her bitterness.

“You have betrayed our country and cooperated with the enemy. You’ve been crossing the canal in a small boat in the darkness of the night, doing something on ‘the other side’. Up to that point, don’t you try to deceive me, it won’t happen.”

“Ki-Kill…me… I have nothing to say…”

How many times did they get that reply –it was clear when you saw the fiery reaction of Presha-san.

“I don’t want to do this either! Why?!! How could you betray Astina-sama and all the knights fighting to protect the country! Who helped you, say it! If you don’t speak…”

Presha-san is fully agitated yet even if she hits and screams at the top of her voice –the woman, doesn’t speak.

The eyes underneath the brown hair, which had lost its luster, looked up at Presha-san, with difficulty her lips moved and spoke “Kill me”.

“Argh! I see… Alright, we don’t have to treat you anymore … as you wish…”

Presha-san’s hand holds the three-pronged spear. The woman prisoner closes her eyes with resignation.

That is to say, the woman has lost her purpose. Since she can’t get any information from those torture, she has no choice but to use another method – discard her.

“Please wait, Presha-san.”

“Shut up. I’m not asking your opinion. If you treat those two guys to the point where they can’t die, your purpose will remain.”

“No, wait… These two guys are trying to kill this person. She did take part in betraying the country… I also think that’s unforgivable, but if you kill her, then it’s over.”

“Don’t say such ridiculous thing! If these guys leaked information to our enemy and they tried to invade the borders, my peers would all be at risk! So I can never forgive them…”

However, if you kill her, you will not know anything. There is also no assurance that the two men will confess the information.

So I want to give them an equal opportunity. It doesn’t make sense that the person who was left to be killed, will die first –it’s not because of justice or anything, it just feels unreasonable.

Chapter 11: The Fortress

A walled fort built inside the bordering canal come into view –the Isle Rose Fortress.

There is a moat around the fort with water drawn from the canal. I can imagine a scene in which several windows for archers were made on the wall inside the moat, and when an enemy soldier tried to cross the moat, arrows rain down.

So this is the front line – this place gives off that feeling.

The bridge across the moat can only be reached from the main gate on the east side. Perhaps since our party can be seen by the soldiers at the fort, a gate made of logs was raised, and then the drawbridge was lowered down for us to pass.

When we crossed the bridge, there is a courtyard allocated where one can park a carriage. When we finally get off, the uncle took the fare and set out again.

Astina-denka’s group also disembarked and entered the fort. For the first time, Raquel-san took off the iron helmet that covered her face –her greenish brunette hair flowed out.

I couldn’t imagine it before as she’s driving a giant horse and controlling the spear, but from her current appearance, I felt a calm and refreshing impression. The line is thinner than I imagined.

Well… usually you can’t wear that heavy armor and swing a spear taller than you. She should be a [Magic warrior].

Magic Warriors are humans who have magical talents yet do not learn magic. They use their magical powers to strengthen their physical abilities instead.

Once you become a magic warrior, you cannot change your path to the road of a magician. Similarly, a magician can’t be a magic warrior – I wonder if Raquel-san became a magic warrior as she didn’t dare to learn magic.

In that case, for a well-tempered body, it is only convincing that one would lose the femininity and have a muscular, well-trained body. Yet although she is trained –her muscles are not enlarged and her neck is even slender.

Raquel-san walks over after she left her spear to her subordinate. It wasn’t for me –they continued to welcome the troops who entered the castle gate. One knight is coming in, riding a beautiful horse with a trident spear.

It’s brave to put on a crown of bluish short hair, but there’s still a little childishness in the features and gestures –I think it’s about the same as Mina who I met previously.

“I’m back. Ara- Captain Raquel, is that the new military doctor?”

“Yes. Don’t scare him too much.”

“What are you talking about? Since a doctor came here, our work would be better.”

“…I will tell Astina-sama. Glass, the discussion for the military doctor will be in the evening. Presha, if you don’t bring him safely, you’ll be punished.”

“I understand. If he’s suitable enough for the job, we will be having a long relationship right?”

A woman called Presha faces me. Even though she has a friendly smile, she feels more powerful than the woman named Dite or Captain Raquel.

“I’m Presha, I’m the attack captain here. Today I have different assignment from Captain Raquel – that is to keep the security in the territory… but the criminals I caught are tight-lipped. I have to make them cough up the information from now on.”

“I’m Glass Weed… by “coughing up information” you mean…”

Needless to ask, as if saying that Presha-san smiled yet her eyes aren’t laughing at all.

“That’s right its torture. I don’t want to go overboard and completely silence them so it would be helpful if a doctor came with me. This will be heavy for your first job, but you’ll do it, right?”

It wasn’t a question, it was an order. Astina-denka, Captain Raquel, and Dite-san are all acknowledging Presha’s actions.

“Glass-sama, for such an order…”

Lendl-san also thinks that the current atmosphere is strange and was worried for me. I am a military doctor yet I was asked to attend torture. For starter, I was going to do this job – a job to afflict and hunt down people who no one would want.

However, it is the same for Presha-san who’s going to do it. Rather, I even respect her, who has been carrying the necessary evil if she had been in charge of torture all the time.

The people of the kingdom have been protected without exception by the Knights, who are fighting at the border and keeping security.

“…This is another important job for the Knights. I will be there too.”

“Good. It looks like you’re pretty courageous. I don’t hate those with backbone.”

Presha’s men carry the prisoners into the fort. Then she urged me to follow and started walking.

“Lendle-san don’t worry. I’m not overwhelmed by the order.”

“Yes… If Glass-sama says so…”

I don’t know how torture in the Knights is always done – but since I’m a military doctor, to keep prisoners from dying, I’ll suggest my own way. There is no need for tragic torture just to get information.

I hope Presha-san will understand it. Even though I’m a newcomer, I’m determined to give out my opinion to the attack captain – even if I need to prepare for my own death.

Chapter 10: The Shepherd’s Daughter

It took about an hour to reach the town from the meadow where we met the shepherd’s father-daughter pair.

Arriving at the town of Portolo, I then give a brief note about the treatment I administered to the doctor at the clinic there. Since the condition is stable, there is nothing to worry about. As a doctor, ensuring the patients recovery is also my responsibility.

“Doctor, I only keep sheep but I do business around here so I’m friendly with some merchants. If you have anything you need, please tell me.”

“Thank you. However, your healthcare is my first priority now.”

I was asked for a handshake, so I took it. I felt his rough hands that I could not have since I am someone who only study.

“Oh… Excuse me, my daughter wants to thank you again. She’s always saying that I’m a bad guy and I’m not good at repaying debt.”

“Father, don’t tell Glass-sama anything extra.”

“There’s no such thing as “sama”…, it’s only normal for doctors to treat patients”

“Emm…No. Father, what are you grinning at?”

“If you came with your father-in-law… I wonder how much he’ll like it when Glass-san suddenly says something like that.”

The Father – Uncle Motoi laughs lively. It seems like he’s fine, however it’s a little troublesome to be too energetic.

“Glass-sama, it’s about time…”

“Ah… s-sorry, Lendl-san. Let’s go.”

I feel that Lendl-san, who has been standing silently by the side for a long time is somewhat bothered – what happened to his sudden mood change?

“Ni… you Idiot…”

“Eermm…, Le-Lendl-san. Did you say “idiot” just now?”

“I have never said that.”

Lendl-san turned to the other side, I feel like he’s truly in a bad mood so I have to follow up later.

Uncle Motoi is called by the doctor at the clinic and walks into the building, leaving her daughter behind. Looking again, she is a simple but a charming girl with her hair neatly tied at the back.

“Uhm… Glass-sama, though it is late, I-I’m Mina…”

“Oh-oh. I’ll remember… Then both of you should take care.”

Mina’s tension inadvertently infects me and makes me a little nervous too. Lendl-san’s mouth was tightly pursed and he looked a bit grumpy, so I decided to give priority to my friendly relations with my secretary.

“…Mina-san is rather cute right?”

“C-come on… Sorry, my bad. I know there are few women who could be comparable to my stepsister.”

“…N-No. It’s not a bad thing to admire someone… I’m sorry, as your secretary, I behaved badly.”

Lendl-san apologizes to me after reconsidering things. However, looking at the current situation, it seems like he was in a bad mood because he had a witnessed my conversation with Mina.

In other words, Lendl-san wanted to monopolize me… It’s not that strange, but I want him to keep up his mind. We’re both men!

Despite my internal conflict, Lendl-san talks in a small voice as he calms down a little while walking.

“Glass-sama, that was a wonderful treatment. You have various medicines.”

“Oh, when you’ve calm down, I’ll explain it to Lendl-san. It was also very helpful that you wiped my sweat that time. Thank you.”

“No, that’s my duty. I’m honoured to be able to help you as an assistant.”

Lendl spoke with his hands on his chest. I think while watching him – although it was not pointed out earlier, it is necessary to explain that the number of men has increased because two men are going to the Knights Order.

We lightly waved at Mina, who was waiting in front of the clinic, then returned back to our carriage to continue our journey.

Chapter 9: Spirit Healing

“I can certainly detoxify this kind of poison. I always carry several antidotes with me.”

“…Really? That medicine…, this poison…”

“Yes, I can cure it. I will never lie to a patient.”

The man is running fever – I ask Lendl-san to arrange water and cloth. Excessive heat can have a negative effect on the tissues of the body, so proper care must be taken to regulate the body temperature.

Upon hearing the instructions, the man finally nodded at me.

“I beg you… I have a daughter… when I’m gone, she’ll be alone…”

“It’s okay, you’ll definitely get better. Trust me.”

I will apply what I learned as a doctor here. The knights already helped me in the fight, but there is something I can also do– medical treatment.

I rinsed the wound with the water brought by Lendl-san then I applied medicine to the swollen wound. To prevent foreign matter from entering, I concentrated the nerves on my fingertips –the poison in the man’s body was also extracted from plants.

Antidote and poison. I start chanting so that the two work well and detoxify.

“Blood Detoxification –Blood Antidote!”

The poison tries to invade the nerve. It takes time to take effect even if you take the medicine normally. The only way to detoxify it is to make the blood flow faster while supplying the patient’s physical strength and directly sending the detoxification component.

“….Glass-sama…”

Lendl-san who’s worried for me, wipes the sweat on my forehead with a handkerchief. Thanks to that, I was able to finish the treatment that required precision, without losing concentration.

I then heat the needle with a match to sterilize and suture the wound. I used a home-made ointment that I have always relied on for stopping bleeding and pain. This will prevent adhesions and will not leave any major scars. Ironically, the sharply polished goblin arrow allowed the wound to draw a straight line, completing the procedure with minimal suturing.

“…My body was gradually getting numb but… my numbness was gone …”

“You should be fine then. Now, take this medicine for two days in the morning and evening. It’s a medicine that cures wounds quickly and a medicine that restores resistance.”

When the body get’s poisoned, the immune system becomes exhausted resisting the poison and it may temporarily stop functioning. Detoxification isn’t enough, and recovery after that is also an important fact –if resistance weakens and you get another illness, you’re dead.

“Thank you… Thank you… Doctor, what’s your name …?”

“I am Glass Weed. I am a Spirit Doctor from the Magic Academy.”

When I said so and raised my face. A knight named Raquel, along with a knight with golden hair, was bringing a girl who seems to be the shepherd’s daughter.

“Father… I’m glad…”

“This doctor helped me. It’s okay now… I’ll be able to stand up after a while…”

“No, you should go to the clinic just in case. In the neighbourhood…”

“There are no doctors in the villages near here. We have to go to a town farther away… let’s send some knights up to that point.”

“Oh y-you are… Astina-sama…!”

The man gives a surprised voice. The daughter, who was pleased with her father’s safety, also stood up to pay respect and bowed many times.

After all, this woman was Her Highness Astina. She is dressed in white silver armor, which is different from other knights. She also wore a white cloak woven with gold thread on the edging. Her golden hair is braided when you look up close, and the long hair was braided in her back.

When she was exposed to the sunlight, I could only say that the figure was divine. It is not unreasonable for territorial people to worship.

“Thank you for treating my people. Glass Weed… seems to be a better doctor than I expected.”

“Ah? H-hah… I’m honored. But I’m just …”

I unintentionally faltered. This is the dignity of the third princess –the bow knight, Dite, also felt dignified, but the quality was different from that.

Her Highness already has the style of a governor. Nevertheless, she went to this mountain herself to protect the people –maybe it was by chance, but it would not be impossible for the princess to command a goblin sweep up.

“…I only did what I could do as a Spirit Doctor, and it was with this intention that I was willing to come here your Highness. This is the result of acting according to my conviction.”

“I accept that determination. However, to say something like pouring water…, our knighthood bans men… We will still decide what would be your position. I need to discuss with executives at our base, Isle Rose.”

I’ve already showed some skill as a doctor but it seems like I still cannot be immediately trusted with that alone.

Raquel seems to be an executive, but she hates magic, so she feels wary of me… The woman named Dite wouldn’t seem like that, but she wouldn’t dare to stand up to me who is only a newcomer.

“My subordinates are protecting the carriage you are riding on. You will be escorted during the transfer to the fortress, so don’t worry about anything. Well then, see you later.”

“T-Thank you very much, Astina-denka.”

The three knights walk their horses toward the public road. Seems like they would return to the fortress first.

“Glass-sama… It’s alright. I’m sure the Princess will recognize you too.”

“I hope so…”

I then faced the father and daughter pair, “Both of you, let’s go to the town together.”

“Yes, Glass-sama. It seems like the Knights will also be patrolling this area for some time in the future. It’s all thanks to you … Thank you very much …!”

The daughter was told to run away by his father, and on the way to the town, she happened to meet with Astina-sama and ask for help.

―Why was the princess here? I was a little concerned about that, but I drive it to the corner of my mind as we headed for a carriage with the father and daughter pair.

Chapter 8: Female Masters

The grass struck by the assault was also in fear. The spear knight wearing heavy armor, like a thunder roaring in the clear blue sky, runs with a giant horse.

“– Sugiaaa!”

A loud cry filled with fighting spirit echoed out. Though her facial expression could not be seen because she’s wearing a helmet that covered her face, her voice was dignified enough to inspire me.

Halfway picking up their weapons, the goblins tried to escape because it can no longer stand the spear knight’s vigour – but it’s already too late.

Soon after screaming, three goblins were tossed into the air at a very high altitude. It has been blown away with a gorgeous spear technique. The remaining goblins were trampled by the giant horse and were blown away. At last, the spear knight pulls the horse’s reins and slows the speed of the attack and turns around.

“Amazing…it was like a siege engine…”

A normal horse would not be able to destroy an enemy with a single-shot attack. The spear knight did it. The larger goblin in the back feels that the choice to escape is meaningless, but tries to throw the spear he had but –

“Guga… Gaa! Gigi!”

With the spear in place, an arrow sticks to the goblin’s forehead. That wasn’t enough, the arrows pierced one after another – the shoulders, chest, and finally the goblin dropped his spear and fell on his back.

“It’s like throwing a dirty spear at Captain Raquel… Shameless thing, Stupid!”

The female knight who shoots the bow does not wear a helmet that covers her face and was in a lighter clothing than the spear knight called Raquel. She slowly approaches to confirm the defeated goblin, but instead of saying radical words, she has a smirk on her face.

If the spear knight was a genuine warrior, the other had the impression that she was an archer in the extension of the noble falconry. Her red hair extends to her shoulders, and her lips have a crimson color to accentuate her beautiful appearance.

“Oh… I’m sorry, I showed you such bad mouth.”

“Ah… N-no. Thank you for your help.”

“…Dite, Astina is waiting. The first thing we can do is return and report.”

“Fufu … Even if captain says that she hates magic, this guy seems to have worked hard himself. Isn’t it a shame to hate him too much?”

She must have realized I used magic to stop the goblins – one could also tell that I’m a magician from my clothes. The formal coat has a golden emblem that indicates that I’m a court magician. It’s not that noticeable, but it’s still obvious to the viewer.

“… It seemed like you were fighting to save the territory. I thank you for that. But I don’t trust magic. I’m sorry”

At the Magic Academy, magic is our purpose for existence, and the power of magic is respected. But going outside is a different story. I was told that it is not uncommon for people to shy away from magicians and to discriminate against them. In fact, when walking around the city in the capital, there were times I had such experience because I was a student of the Magic Academy.

But Raquel-san apologized to me for that. There must be a reason for her to say that she doesn’t trust magic, it’s rude for to ask for her understanding.

“Glass-sama, it seems that the shepherd is injured with the Goblin’s arrow from before…”

“Ah, I have to treat it right away.”

“Treatment …? Since the scratches are shallow, why not just wash with water and bandage them?”

That could be done if only goblin’s arrow has not scratched the person. But if you get injured after receiving the arrow just like before, one needs to see a doctor. I approach the man who is leaning against the fence of the ranch.

“Unn … oh … I’m fine. The arrow scratched by my shoulder, but it’s not a deep wound… “

The man’s face has an pale color that I can see just by approaching it. The arrow was poisoned. A slight purple stain remains on the part hit by the arrow it could be clearly seen in the slightly torn part of the clothes.

“I’m sorry, it seems that the arrow was poisoned. Can you let me treat you?”

“…Who are you? It does seem like the poison has been painted in the arrow, its only a matter if I  survives or dies against the poison…”

“That’s not true. I’m a doctor, you can let me treat you rather than take a risk betting your survival.”

A Spirit Doctor refers to a doctor who can use a spirit as part of his treatment regardless of what kind of spirit he has contracted with.

The poison used by goblins is a neurotoxin possessed by a member of the aeriaceae family. Once in the blood, it goes around the body and gradually paralyzes the muscles –if the toxin cannot be broken down metabolically, you can die in a few hours.

However, since I can intervene with plants, I can accurately deliver the antidote “extracted from plants” to the part of blood where poison is flowing.

Chapter 7: Rescue

“Lendl-san, wait a minute. That person will be killed if I leave it as it is… In end, I’m also a magician. I can’t just do nothing and watch things before my eyes!”

“I will go too. Even if I look like this, I have the escort’s knowledge to protect Glass-sama.”

Lendl-san spoke as he carry a small sword in his hand. The male coachman on the other hand doesn’t know what to do – we can’t just leave things like this!

“Alongside the carriage, please hide by the side of the road! If possible, it would be helpful to return to the checkpoint station and call for help!”

“O-oh… Dear customers!…”

I’m fully aware that it seems to be reckless. However, there is still a chance of winning here. I can fight to some extent in this grassy place.

Goblins flood the man fighting to protect his sheep – the goblin who rode the boar let it hit against the hut, jumped off, and is now running on the ground.

Yes, as a plant spirit user, the “Tall Grass” responds to my words.

“The green grass that covers the ground, heed my call. Block and hinder my enemies… [Leg Entwine Trap Snare!]”

With my hand over the grass at my feet, I chanted. Since no one teach us, we have been improving the basic chant of spirit magic ourselves until we put it into practical use.

The destructive power of elemental magic is beyond reach. But that doesn’t mean I can’t fight at all…!

“Gyiiii!”

“Gyiiii! Gyii, Gi gi…!”

A goblin tried to leap up with a weapon like a broad-bladed knife. The moment its foot take off, the grass at its feet entangled its foot. If only it is finished when it fall down, I could attack further. It’s my first time to use magic in a battle, I can’t really sugarcoat it.

“The green grass that covers the ground, heed my call. Bind my enemies!…”

“Glass-sama!”

Simultaneously, I have stopped dozens of goblins. Until now, I didn’t understand how exhausting it was because I had no experience in battle.

My field of view fluctuates. The goblin, who was quickly released from the snare’s restraint, holds a bow towards me – but-

“ –Hyaaa!”

Lendl-san who broke in front of me puts his hand forward. He somehow used magic as the arrow that came towards me was thrown and hit the ground.

“I will never let you get hurt … I’m here for that …!”

Goblins escape restraint one after another. If it remains like this, neither the people of the ranch nor us can survive.

Even if I could not participate in the mock battle, I should have voluntarily trained in battle in preparation for the battle with demons!

It’s not like my spirit magic didn’t work on the goblins. My body wobbled a little. Even if I’m fully exhausted, it could only be few days in coma.

That’s fine as long as I don’t die. If we can survive…, Lendl-san who tried to protect me and those important to me, I’ll try to protect my important things!

“…Glass-sama, Don’t. You’ve done more than enough already!, furthermore is….”

Chanting the spell, Sven’s words cross my mind – “Magic that blows away enemies from a distance is said to be useful”

“To protect people… Isn’t it enough to just heal? Protecting nothing…”

– At that time, the sound of a loud horn flew across the plains.

With the whistle, something emerged from the western direction – three knights who bravely drive their horses.

There were three female knights with beautiful hair like platinum, a spear knight followed by bow knights on both sides.

“I can’t let go of any monster that hurt the territory. Trample them, Raquel, Dite.”

“Yes!”

Ferociously guiding the horses, the knights run through and kicked the goblins who had risen up. Faintly looking at the scene, I think –

If the person called ‘Sword Princess’ was that female knight, I wonder if she was so beautiful and strong enough to admire.

Chapter 6: In the Mountain

About 30 minutes being rocked inside the horse-drawn carriage, I could sometimes see the scenery outside from the passenger seat’s window. Although public roads to the western territories are maintained, because it is surrounded by mountains on all sides, it is easy to be destroyed by beasts. Every time we approach a bumpy road, a big shake is transmitted.

“Lendl-san, are you alright? It seems like you can’t sit comfortably.”

“…A little, the shaking… It’s been a while since I’ve ridden a carriage…”

As expected, in this rocking, no matter how good the semicircular canals are, you will get dizzy. Speaking of myself, I don’t mind the shaking because I actually drunk a motion sickness medicine before I get on a carriage.

“It’s better to take some medicine. It may make you a little sleepy, but it should work.”

“……Yes, thank you very much.”

Mr. Lendl looks rather dizzily and pretty sick but for some reason, he’s hesitating to look at me while rubbing his back.

It’s hard to tell because the coat’s shoulders are bulky, but this person’s build… his shoulder’s doesn’t look that broad. I’m not sure if it’s because he’s wearing a hat, but the shape of his head is also androgynous… Some people have that kind of constitution, but it’s rare.

I want to avoid being suspected as a homosexual so I can’t tell him to take off his coat. However while sitting down, he looks so uneasy that he can’t help but put his hands on his knees. At first it was a slightly pigeon-toed, but when he realized that I was looking at him, his knees gradually opened up –it seems like he realized I was observing.

When I handed him a vial containing a medicine to prevent motion sickness, Lendl-san turned his back to me and pulled down on the collar that had hidden his mouth, and swallowed the medicine in one breath.

“Hngh…”

“Oh…”

Even the way his throat squeals is something strange! I have no hobbies like that. There are some aristocrats who like male sex, but it’s a culture unrelated to me born in the common people!

“Ah … it’s refreshing. Was this medicine made by Glass-sama?”

“A-aha… I made it by mixing fruit vinegar and tea extract. I feel refreshed because I use peppermint oil.”

“Wow, Amazing! It’s something like a food ingredient right? It could even be made into a medicine.”

Because it is basically made for people to eat it, all food ingredients such as herbs and fruits can be used as ingredients.

In my case, if it’s a “vegetable ingredient”, I can tell what kind of effect it has on the human body by putting it in my mouth. There is an unlikely event of being poisoned. Even though I only touch it, I can tell if it is poisonous, so I will not be hit by the poison of wild grass or mushrooms.

And if I did get poisoned, I can search for plants that have the necessary components for detoxification. Although it was useful in the pharmacy class, it was not enough to be recognized as a talent because of the Academy’s structure.

“How about you Glass-sama?”

“No, I’m glad that your motion sickness was stopped. It may not be very effective for some people.”

“I am glad that the medicine made by Grass-sama is effective. When I catch cold, I can count on you to treat me right, Glass-sama?”

“There are various colds, but the best thing to do is to prevent them from happening. I’ll tell you some ways to preventive measures in advance in case the Knights catch some colds.”

Talking with Lendl-san, I think there’s a lot to do for me. Most probably, my skill as a Spirit Doctor is still lacking as a doctor.

“It seems that you used fruit vinegar to stop motion sickness … Did you use Fig tree fruits?”

“Oh, that’s right. You understand well, Lendl-san. Do you like fruit and vegetables?”

“No, I knew the flavor. I got it by accident.”

The Fig tree’s fruits I got from the elders helped me a lot to develop drugs. However, it was not possible to cure all diseases with only the plants within the school or within the reach of my feet.

Leaving the institute and looking for an unknown plant – the more injuries and illnesses that can be healed more. I had such a thought but I was hesitant to leave the elders alone.

But when I greeted the elders this morning, I was told to go. They said they can live for another fifteen years because of my care. I hope it will not revert back in the meantime.

The two fruits that have been handed to me as a farewell are wrapped in two pieces of paper in a bag. Other plants also asked to be brought themselves, so I brought bottled medicines with herbs for heat and cold detoxification. There are also bulbs and seeds that can be cultivated even in the west.

Other plants also asked to bring themselves, so I brought bottled medicines and grass for heat and cold detoxification into bottles.

“I have dry bread and dried meat for lunch. I also like fruits and vegetables, so I brought some.”

“When we take fruits, the nutritional deviation is reduced… is what my friend said.”

“Oh, that’s right. Vegetables, fruits, plant-based foods are basically good for your health. Meat and grains are important, but other things tend to be in short supply.”

I can diagnose which nutrient is deficient by touching life forms. The plant that should be taken to supplement also comes to mind. There are times that what comes to mind is an unknown plant that cannot be collected nearby. Some were monster-like plants, and I thought that there is no good or bad contract with the spirits.

―But I still don’t have a clue on what the mysterious sight I saw when I signed the contract and who that woman was. I think it’s okay to see it in my dreams even once…

“Then, it’s time to eat…”

“No… wait a moment, something smells strange…”

“…Glass-san, this is…!”

It smells like something is burning. A burnt tree – it’s faintly coming in through a window.

From the mountain road, a horse-drawn carriage, which had been running out into a hilly area with tall grass, suddenly stopped.

“Dear customers, it seems that things are going to be difficult … Wow, uh, demons… and there are so many hordes …!”

Going out of the carriage to see what’s happening, there was black smoke rising from the ranch huts in the hill. Something like an earth tremor could even be heard from the distance– it was the high-pitched cry of creatures. A number of fireballs flew into the clear blue sky, it shoot one after another towards the huts and spread the fire.

That was… I’ve never seen it near the capital. Goblins…!

A demon with a dark skin and a physique about a human child – formed into party of 10, it was attacking the ranch.

“The damn demons come shamelessly without discipline! I won’t hand over my sheep!”

A man jumping out of a hut shoots an arrow at a goblin. Yet even though it was a mere goblin, it used an iron helmet to deplete the arrow.

“Gyiiii-ii-i!”

The goblin at the end was riding at something – it was a boar that was one size larger than the goblin itself.

Kicking off the fence, all together, it beat down obstacles. While rolling up dust and pushing forward, the goblin cleverly took the bow and arrow and shoots at the man – it’s no longer a situation where you can keep on the sidelines!

Chapter 5: Spirit Doctor’s Secretary

What made the Second Queen think about me as a court magician wasn’t clear, but the documents showing that I was recognized as a court magician were real.

My rank as a court magician is the hundred eighth place. However, it is not immediately respected as the 108th magician in the kingdom, but rather it is doubtful what kind of method was used to obtain the position.

In fact, there are many students who harass or look down on students who have drawn unlucky spirits. Though not all were like that, those who have excellent and bad grades often looks down on us.

“Well, this is an exciting topic. The world hasn’t thrown you away yet.”

My roommate Sven, was back in the room before me. When I told him that I was going to the West tomorrow, he was surprised with his eyes open wide at first, but immediately congratulated me.

Sven has a contract with the ‘rock’ spirit, which causes his hair to turn gray. He’s lamenting that he’s often mistaken for an old man, as he was only 19 years old.

Since he became my roommate three years ago, Sven and I came to each other without any quarrel. Although we were treated like those who similarly contracted unlucky spirits, we were not convinced and humbled by the surrounding evaluations.

“Unlucky spirits and the whole flop thing are labels made by hard-headed people – Though it’s coming from a ‘rock’ user.”

“Well, Sven is the head of the rock. It’s really good for combat, but everyone has no eyes.”

“It’s considered a magician’s job to blow away without approaching things, so there’s nothing I can do about it. I think it’s also necessary to defend as well as attack.”

Sven’s tone gives the impression that he is old. Leslie sometimes mentioned he’s “Like an old man”. That is also one of the reasons why he is seen older than his age.

“Sven, when I go, please take care of Leslie…”

“I refuse.”

“Oi… What’s with that. It may look like a joke but I’m actually serious…”

Me, Sven and Leslie. Often, we three acted together, and Leslie, a shy person, would see Sven as her only friend.

However, Sven shrugs his shoulders and grabs a homemade cigar I made in an experimental match. He ignites it and smokes. Even if it looks like this, it is a medicinal cigar that is used to suppress inflammation of the lungs and circulatory system, so it does not harm health.

“Glass, Don’t be mad. In behalf of Leslie, I have to tell you off. I can’t substitute for you or vice versa. In addition…”

“In addition?”

“No, nothing. Glass, I’m thinking of getting some kind of qualification like you. I’ll continue looking for a job. For the time being, I’ll be in this dormitory, I’ll leave the room as is in case you came back to the Academy.”

“Oh, that helps. Well, I wouldn’t just come back, but I’m sure there is a need to return to school.”

If I were to come back, it would be after being recognized by Her Highness, Astina. Perhaps it could also be when I made some achievement, established my position, and got a vacation.

Otherwise, it would be when I completed my role in the West. In any case, it will take a few years or dozen of years.

“Well, let’s go out to the city and drink today. Let’s toast for my best friend’s rise to fame.”

“Fame huh… I hope that happens. First of all, I have to make sure that they don’t say that I’m useless so that the court magician’s approval would not be revoked.”

Sven puts on a jacket from the wall, and I followed suit. We don’t have that much money to free up, so unlike other students, entertainment is limited to modest things.

Still, this day, I thought that I wouldn’t forget the taste of the cheap sake I had with Sven even if I went to the West.

◆◇◆

Next morning.

There would be a horse-drawn carriage coming to the front gate of the Magic Academy, I took my luggage and put on a long coat over the full set uniform and came out to the front.

Despite the early spring, it is sometimes chilly and sometimes frosty in the morning. It’s relatively warm today, but what about the West? — Since the northern border is high and the temperature is low, it would surely be plagued by snow, I would like to expect a more adaptable environment than that.

“Glass-Ni.., Glass Weed-sama. Is that perhaps you?”

“Uuu… Yeah, You surprised me. What do you want from me?”

I was suddenly called while waiting for the carriage. If that’s only the case, I wouldn’t be so surprised, but I was suddenly caught off guard by the strange appearance of the person who called me out.

The man – has a loud voice – wore a coat over a black butler-like outfit. He’s small, but he’s gaining height by wearing slightly thick leather shoes, and his eye level isn’t much different from me.

However, I was more surprised by being face to face. He wore a coat collar to cover his mouth, put on a hat and wore dark glasses that only some teachers use at the Magic Academy.

Such suspicious looking attire… No, Each person has his own circumstances.  Maybe he doesn’t show his face because he has a high voice and looks like a boy.

I managed to calm myself and accept the strange appearance of a man calling out to me.

“Congratulations to you as you have been selected as a court magician. I am Le…Lendl. I was appointed as Glass-sama’s attendant. Therefore, I will accompany you to the west.”

“Lendl… I’ve never heard of a student with that name. Or maybe, I just don’t know.”

“I’m not a student, I was dispatched by the Butler Association after being nominated by the Headmaster.”

When I become a court magician, I thought I’ll have a secretary like my stepsister. My stepsister has several female secretaries, but in my case it seems to be a male butler.

“Rather than butler, will you be my secretary?”

“Yes. Being a military doctor is a very busy job. Please tell me anything about managing the medical records of the knights. I will assist you in the treatment.”

To be honest, it looks suspicious, but it’s more encouraging to have someone come with me than to go to a land I don’t know by myself.

“Okay, I don’t know if I can go there and start working as a military doctor right away, but I’ll do whatever I can to do. Thank you in the future.”

“Same here, I’ll be in your care, Glass-n…Glass-sama”

When I held out my right hand, Mr. Lendl grabbed it back sparingly. Even if he wore gloves, it’s still petite, and his hands are one size smaller than mine.

“…this…”

“I-Is there something wrong?”

“No, I’m sorry, I somehow remember my friend. I hope she is fine.”

Leslie didn’t come to see me off, but hopes for me to write a letter when I arrive in the west safely. Actually I had already done it last night – I’m on the front line so we won’t know what happens.

“This is a letter to a friend. Is it okay to ask Lendl-san to keep it in case something goes wrong? I think the first request is a little heavy…”

“… No, it’s not heavy. Certainly, I will keep it.”

“Thank you.”

I gave the letter to Mr. Lendl. He locked it in his coat pocket. Though he is small, the chest part looks bulky.

“Lendl-san, are you doing any martial arts? Your packed chest is amazing.”

“Eeeh, no. How to say this… It’s an embarrassing story. It’s a pigeon chest, so I’m wrapping it up.”

“Ah…, is that so. I’m sorry, I asked something strange.”

“No, don’t worry about it. And I’m your secretary so I don’t need honorific’s.”

“Understood. Then as you wish… Lendl-san, the carriage has arrived, let’s go?”

Being a male of the same age, it would be nice to be able to build a friendly relationship with Lendl-san.

When I get on the passenger seat of the wagon, Lendl-san with his hat came afterwards. He did not take off his hat even when he entered the carriage –Well, there are people like that, so I did not pursue it deeply.

“… I am also new to the Western land, so I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of place it is.”

Thanks to Lendl-san who talked to me like that, it seemed like I don’t need to think about anything by myself and become anxious until I arrived in the West.
