Walking, Chapter 372: The work is progressing little by little

During lunch, I asked the master carpenter and the adventurers what they usually did with reclaimed lumber.

“The most common use is turning it into tables and chairs. Shelves, small furniture, and other odds and ends too.”

The master carpenter replied.

“And the wooden statues the Champion makes are carved from leftover scraps,” one of the adventurers added. “Though it all depends on how much usable timber is left.”

The answers were pretty much what I had expected.

In the end, everything hinged on dismantling the orphanage first and seeing whether any of the salvaged wood could actually be reused.

“Besides that, the workshop has plenty of offcuts we never really have a use for. If you want to carve those into statues, I’ve got no objections.”

“We’ll also have to work out how the profits are divided. We’ll need to discuss that with Emilia-sama and the High Priest later.”

Before making use of the master carpenter’s suggestion, we need to get approval from the people in charge.

Meanwhile, the conversation continued as I kept working.

“Hey, kid! Another meat sandwich!”

“Me too!”

Woah.. the adventurers we gathered could really eat…

Still, hearing them ask for seconds was far better than hearing them complain that the food tasted bad.

“Ahh… I’m stuffed. As expected of the Lightning Chef—everything you make is incredible.”

“If possible, I’d love to take some home for dinner…”

The master carpenter had eaten his fill as well and looked thoroughly satisfied.

Just then, one of the rookie adventurers approached me with an apologetic expression.

“There are still plenty of ingredients left, so don’t worry.”

“““All right!!”””

The moment they heard my answer, the rookie adventurers erupted with renewed enthusiasm. If serving them a little extra food was all it took to keep their spirits this high, it was a bargain.

“Just be careful not to get hurt while you’re working,” I thought as I continued preparing packed meals for everyone to take home.

“All right, that’s enough for today.”

Beastmen really were incredibly strong. They managed to finish building the scaffolding for the demolition in a single day. The real work of tearing the orphanage down would begin tomorrow, so everyone planned to get a good night’s rest.

“““We’re done pulling the weeds!”””

“You all did an amazing job.”

“““Hehe!”””

It looked like Shiro and the others had finished clearing the weeds around the church as well.

Sue and I praised them for all their hard work.

That wrapped things up for the day. We’ll call it here and give it our best again tomorrow.

“By the way, the master carpenter sent word that the plans for replacing the church’s flooring are finished. Starting tomorrow, adventurers will be coming to tear up the old floor.”

Emilia-sama informed us while were having dinner.

So the church renovations were finally getting underway as well.

Which meant tomorrow was going to be even busier than today.

As for the small wooden statues, we received the High Priest’s approval, so there were no problems there. The church would be put in charge of selling them.

“The children at the orphanage are as lively as ever. But for their future, we really need to teach them reading, writing, and arithmetic.”

“That would definitely be for the best. It’ll give them far more opportunities when it’s time for them to find work.”

Emilia-sama wasn’t just thinking about the orphanage’s immediate needs—she was already looking ahead to the children’s future. Apparently, the steward assigned to oversee the orphanage would be responsible for teaching them.

Little by little, everything is moving forward.
