Walking, Chapter 394: Training in handling a carriage

With our departure for the Royal Capital just one day away, we are still practicing how to properly handle the carriage.

Ao and Sue had taken turns driving earlier, and now it was my turn.

Clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop.

“Next, Shiro gets to make the horses walk!”

“All right. Once we take a break and let the horses rest, you can take over.”

“““Okay!”””

We are traveling through the outskirts of the city, and Shiro and the others were eager to have a turn as coachmen, too. It seemed they had gotten quite attached to the horses, because they were also taking care of them enthusiastically.

“Maroon, does that feel good?”

“Ale-chan says it feels good, too.”

The two of them were wiping down the horses, and somewhere along the way, the horses had apparently gotten names.

The chestnut horse had been given the extremely straightforward name Maroon, while the bay horse was named after the legendary horse Areion.

Areion was a bit of a mouthful, so everyone called him Ale or Arei for short.

“Boo… I liked Shiro’s names better…”

“No, no. Those names were definitely out of the question.”

The names Shiro had wanted to give the horses were To◯kai Te◯o and Di◯p Im◯act.

Shiro sulked, but there was no way I could give them names that dangerous. I am sure someone somewhere would come after me for it. More importantly… how does Shiro even know names like that?

“They’re young horses, but they’re very calm and easy to handle.”

“If they were wild and unruly horses, we’d be in for a lot of trouble. Of course, I wouldn’t buy horses like that in the first place.”

Sue seemed quite pleased with the two horses as well.

Since they were young, there was always a chance they might have had a rough temperament, but the two of them showed no signs of that at all.

“The horses are feeling better now. Okay, Shiro gets to walk them!”

“Shiro, wait a second. There’s someone not in the carriage yet.”

“Hehehe.”

And so, we spent the entire morning practicing how to handle the carriage before returning to the Margrave’s residence.

Since even Fran and Horn could handle the horses without any trouble, there was nothing to worry about. We took the horses back to the stables, and in the afternoon, Shiro and the others studied together with the children from the orphanage.

“I see. So you’re finally leaving tomorrow. You’ve been a big help to us, young man.”

I had gone to visit the construction site of the church’s orphanage. With many craftsmen hard at work as usual, I told the foreman that we would be leaving tomorrow.

“Don’t worry. We’ll make sure this orphanage is finished properly. You guys just focus on your own work. When you come back to the Margrave’s territory, you can see the finished place for yourselves.”

We wouldn’t be able to stay until the very end and see the construction completed, but seeing the foreman flash a big grin, I knew the orphanage was in good hands.

The next time we came to the western Margrave’s territory, I hoped to see the children happily running around this place.
