Just in case, Ao and I deployed magic barriers before opening the door to the study. The reason was that I could sense a concentration of magical power building up inside.
Boom!
The moment we opened the door, a male mage unleashed all the magical power he had been storing.
Shing! BOOM!
BAM!
“Guh! You actually blocked that?”
Bzzzt! Bzzzt! BZZZT!
“Guhh!”
Thud.
The mage was caught off guard by how easily we’d blocked his attack. I took advantage of that opening and silently unleashed a bolt of electricity. The mage took the full force of the lightning, his face twisting in agony before he collapsed to the floor.
“Marquis Broker, what an abrupt way to greet us.”
“Hmph. Look who’s talking. You’ve brought a whole parade of people along with you like a bunch of parasites clinging to a goldfish.”
The Minister of Military Affairs was talking to an extremely obese man dressed in extravagant clothes, his bald head gleaming under the light.
There was no mistaking it. That has to be Marquis Broker.
I secretly used Appraisal on him, just to be sure, and the results confirmed it. Surrounding Broker Marquis were ten armed men, each gripping a dagger in their hands.
“Minister of Military Affairs, I appraised that man, and he came up as a member of the Red Scorpion as well as an executive of the Human Supremacy Cult.”
“Yeah. We already have that information. It’s honestly embarrassing that someone like him was ever a minister.”
Along with the Minister of Military Affairs and the Commander of the Knights, Tory-sama also drew his sword and took up a stance.
But rather than Broker Marquis and his armed men, our attention was drawn to one other person in the room. He was a young man dressed impeccably in a butler’s uniform, his hair neatly groomed. Yet even compared to everyone else here, he felt overwhelmingly stronger.
So Ao and I decided to make our move all at once.
Shing! Shing!
BZZZT! BZZZT! BZZZT!
“““Aaaaagh!”””
We unleashed a powerful Area Stun that covered everyone in the room. A few of the mages somehow managed to resist it, but the butler merely smiled, looking completely unfazed.
“Heh.”
CLANG!
“Oh, my. For the Commander of the Knights to attack a humble butler with a real sword…”
“Hmph. And yet you caught my sword without so much as flinching.”
The butler casually blocked Vargas-sama’s sword with a dagger. He was clearly on a completely different level from the other members of the Dark Organization around him. More importantly, he had been holding his own against Vargas-sama, who was himself the Commander of the Knights.
“Take this!”
“Hyah!”
“““Guh!”””
As for the mages who had somehow managed to resist the Area Stun, Shiro and Tory-sama dispatched them with ease.
Thinking about that, it really drove home just how far above the others that butler was.
CLANG!
“Whew. I suppose this is as far as we go. I’ll be taking my leave for now.”
“You bastard! What are you planning?!”
Once every other member of the Dark Organization had been defeated, the butler forcibly broke away from Vargas-sama and put some distance between them. He pulled a magical device from inside his jacket and operated it. A magic circle then appeared on the floor.
“I’m sure we’ll meet again. Until then.”
“Damn it! Stop!”
Clang! Clang! Clang!
Vargas-sama slashed repeatedly at the magic circle that had appeared around the butler, but it didn’t so much as budge.
The butler then gave us a courteous bow. The magic circle suddenly flared with an intense, blinding light. And when the torrent of light finally faded, the butler had vanished without a trace.
“Damn it. He got away.”
“Even with a detection spell, I can’t sense him at all.”
The Minister of Military Affairs stared toward the spot where the butler had disappeared, looking deeply frustrated. But there was one thing we could say for certain.
There was absolutely no doubt that the butler had been involved in the Marquis Broker’s incident.
