Chapter 3: Survival (1)

Looking at everyone looking at me full of hope, I can’t help but shatter their expectation.

“I don’t have anything noteworthy except for my sharp instinct at the moment so I want you guys to tell me what you are capable of so we could at least proceed forward safely.”

They looked taken aback by my words and silence once again permeated the area. They all seemed to be in deep thought. Using this opportunity, I removed my goggles and acted as if I am cleaning it. While doing so, I observed the surrounding area.

Previously, everyone was clearly focused on me. In this area with zero visibility, it was impossible for them to see me unless there was something within me that make me visible.

Without the goggles, the area was totally foggy. The only area where we could see was at least five steps away from us. Light also seemed to be illuminating our group right now but I can’t pinpoint where it is.

Gripping the bat in hand, a sudden thought came to mind. This weapon…

Trying out my theory, I threw the weapon lightly. It rolled at least a few meter away and a five-step radius was once again illuminated out. There was a tree near where it landed and even a few rocks were around it.

Grabbing the weapon from the uncle beside me, I could finally know where it is. It was thanks to the small stone embedded in the weapon that we could at least see about five steps away from us.

If it was the case, why was the previous troop making a round formation?

Wearing the goggles back, I checked the area where the weapon landed. Since it was safe, I decided to move towards the weapon I’ve thrown. Picking it up, I sat on the small rock and waved towards the group. Convinced that the area was safe, they then move towards me.

“Kid, that was some excellent observation.” The man named Muris patted me while he sat at the rock beside me.

“I’m Roco and though I am not sure of my strength, I could at least run fast.” One of the uncles voluntarily spoke as he finds a place to sit. The others then similarly voiced out the same thing while explaining that it was the only thing they could do as they were still pretty tired and hungry. It turned out that slaves were working as miners before being dragged to war.

Facing the lone girl in the group, she stammered but still introduced herself. “I-I am Diana and I’m also a graduating student.” Her gaze at me explains that she knows me and she even look a bit familiar.

“You are also playing the flute right? Try playing some notes like the other girl before.”

Diana’s expression instantly changed. It was jealousy at first then she was filled of fury and hatred.

“Diana?” I tried to get her attention and she then quickly tried to play some notes. The sound was so bad that I can’t help but cover my ears!

Finally noticing our dilemma, she abruptly stopped. She is now fidgeting none stop, I know she was feeling anxious but I don’t know how to console her. The music was truly bad. When I looked at the uncles, they were holding their heads while kneeling down the ground. Their faces were beet red, it was as if they were drunk.

Looking at the other guy who came with us, he was similarly holding his ears. The music has different effects!

“Hey.” I patted the other guy’s back lightly. I should use this chance to know his strength while the uncles were still in their drunk state.

Finally snapping out of it, he replied. “Thanks senior. I’m Denis, and like I’ve said before I’m only from the landscape club…” his voice sound dejected.

“Hmm… What were the things you have been doing there?” Though he was confused with my question he still answered me.

“Alright, hold the ground while imagining that you are planting some tomatoes then.”

Though perplexed with the idea, his eyes showed great interest. In no time, he crouched down and touched the ground with his hands. Magically a little stem popped out of the ground and little by little it was forming a tomato plant, it even bore few fruits and it ripened fast!

“Wow!”

Diana and Denis were both surprised. With my cue, we each curiously took out some fruit. Right after plucking the ripe fruits, the plant turned into smoke – it was as if it was never there as the soil looked so flat.

With tacit understanding we tried out the tomato, it was juicy and somehow it quench my thirst. “Before we were here, what are you guys doing?” I asked while munching down on the red tomato, right now I truly need this, it felt like even my wounded feet was healing up.

“I am in the garden at that time when I saw a blinding light.” Denis replied while munching. Diana also voice out that she saw same thing.

We all saw a blinding light huh.

Noticing that the uncles were still in their drunk state, I asked Denis to try imagining other fruit trees. He successfully produced some watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuces. But producing apples and others are hard for him.

Seems like his power would only work if he knows the exact plant or tree itself, just imagining the fruit it bears is useless.

“This time, try imagining the soil at my feet to form into shoes but this time, just look at the ground.” I urged Denis.

Nodding, Denis looked intently at the ground before me. It already took a while and I could even see Denis was sweating profusely but there were no changes. “Denis, stop. Just touch the ground and try it one more time.”

He looked tired but he still followed my instruction. This time it was done swiftly and it was a huge success. I felt that the soil was coiling into my feet like that of a snake and in the next moment, a shoe was made out of the ground. Trying it out, it was stuck right to the feet and even though I jumped, it did not break!

“Oh, that sure is some kind of special magic kid!” Muris spoke as he went near us.

Glimpsing at the other uncles, they were still feeling groggy but they were now snapping out of their drunk state. Muris was the first one to get up and I did not even notice his presence when he approached us.

“Uncle, we are trying out the abilities we gained.” Denis spoke and it was apparent that he was seeking some praise.

“Nice one kid.” Muris even patted him. “So what about you two?”

“I-I think I was the one who made you guys feel sleepy.” Diana replied.

I stayed quiet and observe the group. From the uncles’ gazes I could already tell they have ranked us three. Checking the Orcs, they still appear to have no movements and they looked like they were guarding something.

“Let’s prepare to move forward. For the meantime you guys could eat the food Denis has prepared.” While saying so, I pointed out the foods we collected.

“Oh, Denis’ power sure is great.” The uncles simultaneously thanked him and began eating. They were not even half done when we heard a loud rumbling sound gathering our attention.

When I looked into it, there was a group of Orcs coming our way and their speed was alarming! Damn! They were clearly not there before!

Chapter 2: Unbelievable Situation (2)

A red flare light up and its location pointed at the central area.

“Release the next batch of slaves!” The captain’s loud voice echoed out.

 Clank! Clank! Clank!

The simultaneous sound of metal chains being dropped down echoed out right after the captain’s voice died down. Five middle aged men were pushed forward and they only wore ragged clothing and old shoes. Similar to us, they should also be used as meat shields.

One of the soldiers at the back handed out a bunch of wooden bat with metal spikes as weapon. He also gave me a torn brown cape, I looked at him deeply. I’ll remember him. As I’m only in my swimming shorts, this tattered cape could do me a favor.

“Next batch set forward! Run towards the central area!” As the captain’s loud voice echoed out, the armed soldiers pushed our bodies forward. Given that force, we had no other choice but to run or else the spear and swords would hit our backs!

Hiss! The sharp rocks were painful to the feet yet I could only follow the other’s rhythm. In the group, I was the only one barefoot!

Looking back, the soldier’s weapon where thrust out and they were ready to kill anyone who runs back. “Fire your flare once you have met up with the previous group!” The resounding voice of the group’s leader echoed out.

The armed soldiers were only slowly following us, I could already tell that they would stop once we have entered the smog. Discretely adjusting the goggles, I peered with my left eyes and I could say that we still have at least a meter to go until we entered the smoggy area.

Placing back the goggles, I swept my gaze along the uncles running with us. Their expression tells me that they have long given up! Even the two who came with me showed despair and fear!

Damn it!

“What are you good at?” I asked the big man beside me in between running.

He only glanced at me but did not respond. Getting no answer from him I looked at the other guy at my side. “What are you good at?” Seeing that there was little bit trace of anger, I realized my question was wrong. “I don’t mean anything bad. I just want to know what your characteristics are. We will be fighting to our deaths so we should at least know our capabilities for us to survive!”

The guy stayed silent for a while but he then eventually speak. “I’m one from the landscape club Senior.” His voice seemed to be gasping for air as we were running.

Oh… This guy recognizes me at least.

Hmmm… music was categorized as wind… Landscape should be… soil…plants…Earth!

“That seemed to be something useful… When we came here do you notice anything different around you?”

He shook his head and despair was once again vivid in his face. He also doesn’t have anything with him that I could clearly see. For now, getting to know each other should do.

“I’m Dylan, what should I call you?” I extended my hands but he looked at it truly surprised. He then once again focused on running. Silence once again permeated our group as we moved forward. Little by little I could feel that our pace has been toning down.

Right now, we were only walking… slightly lifting the goggles, I found that we had finally entered the smog! Readjusting the goggles, I looked back and the soldiers following us really stopped in their tracks.

“Guys let’s stop. Let’s form into a circle.” Right after that, I halted my footsteps while grabbing the two people beside me. This caused chain reaction and the others did the same thing unconditionally – causing the entire group to halt.

I could see that we are at a safe distance from the swarm of Orcs. Even the monsters seemed to have only moved towards that certain area and they have no plans to advance just yet.

“Senior Dylan you…” the voice of the guy beside me holds a lot of confusion.

“We will only meet our deaths if we don’t form a proper stance at least.” I could not really tell them that I could see everything clearly here. Blindly trusting them is idiocy.

“Yo, this kid sure has some brains.” One of the uncles moved towards me while dragging both guy beside him. Finally right now, all of us were faced with each other. Seeing that the look in their eyes slightly changed, I have this foreboding feeling.

“You’re Drifters aren’t ya?” The Uncle who initiated the conversation once again spoke out.

I don’t know what Drifters is but I’m sure I heard it in the tower before…

Nodding my head, he laughed and extended his hands. “I am Muris. We are group of slaves and leaving this cliff alive would ensure us freedom. Kid, we are hoping you could give us a hand.”

“Dylan.” Taking his big rough hands, I knew he only wanted to live so this should be fine.

Anyway now is not the time to be picky!

Survival comes first.

Chapter 1: Unbelievable Situation (1)

“Huh?”

Where the hell is this?!

The scene that greeted me after that blinding light was totally different! I’m really greatly baffled. I thought somebody sneaked in and took my picture once again… but the view now tells me otherwise.

I’m not in the indoor pool but in a Drift Tower it says!

Positioning the goggles into my head, the view was really… unfamiliar! The area was in a circular shape and the floor was even made like that of a paved road – correcting, this should be a rooftop as the sensation of having stand near the edge of a high building is real! I had similar feeling when I did the 15m cliff dive.

Right in front of me were three men draped in black robes making it difficult to discern their facial features. Their attires were pretty similar to those magicians in the anime series I usually watch. The most striking part was the thing erected at the central most part of this structure. The circular formation was glowing blood red and it is at least the size of the three men combined!

“This batch… they look rather ordinary…” One of them moved forward and his voice was tinge with disappointment.

“Don’t question their appearance, they may hold great strength. Quick bring them to the captain of the knights. The magic circle is once again reacting. This time we are truly lucky, the dimensional rift brought us four batches of Drifters!”

Drifters? Wait batch?

Looking sideways, I finally saw the others! I was not alone and judging by the uniform some of them wore, we should be from the same school! Aside from me, there were four other guys. One was still in his soccer uniform while the other three was on their school uniform. The two girls seemed to be from the music club as they still have their instruments at hand.

Oi Oi… Just where the hell are we now?!

“Tsk.” The other man with a disappointed expression pointed his hands towards us and another blinding light appeared.

The moment I opened my eyes I’m in front of a battlefield.

A real battlefield!

The area in front has zero visibility, it was like there was a thick smog covering the area in which only a few tall and dense trees could be discernible. There were even fully armed soldiers barricading in front…

This should be a dream!

Tapping my face and readjusting the goggles to fit my eyes. I thought of imagining of diving in the pool but the previously smoggy area cleared out. I could definitely see things clearly now!

A troop of fully armed soldiers in their bronze armours moved slowly step by step and they were positioned in a circular formation and not so far were a swarm of monsters – Orcs to be particular and they were unbelievably gigantic!

“What are you good at?”

That cold voice has awoken me from stupor. Looking back, a scary looking man asked. His face even has a double cross mark scar. Judging from his golden plate armour he should be the captain.

Gulp.

Thankfully I was not the one asked yet… But what would happen if it was my turn then?!

It was already obvious! I was even only in my Hydrosense Aquashort!

For the first time, I lacked confidence – I felt really ashamed. Nervousness consuming me, I can’t help but tap on my biofuse polarised goggle.

Wait… this goggles has special function! Removing the goggles, the scenery once again showed a complete smoggy area! I could not see a thing but with it on, I could see the area clearly!

This should be something I could tell!

“I… I also play music…” The girl beside me was so scared that her voice is trembling so much as she speak.

The captain has advanced so quickly! In no time it was my turn already! I did not even hear the others speak!

“Oh… you should also belong to the wind element.” Looking at the captain’s expression he seemed to be thinking yet doubt was apparent from his gaze.

Wait? Flute…Wind element? This goggles would surely only be taken from me if I say its function!

“Try playing some notes!” The captain ordered sternly, though the girl was trembling she somehow played a nice flute sound.

“Excellent!!! You could certainly assist us. I felt that my body was now free from fatigue!” The captain laughed and tapped at the girl’s shoulder. “How about you guys?” He asked his comrades and most of them who clearly heard the melody exclaimed that they have also felt refreshed.

Nodding, the captain’s gaze then focused on me. His scar was surely frightening!

“You!” He pointed me as he stayed in his position. “What are you good at?”

“I-I am exp–good at sw-swimming…” My voice was barely inaudible but I still received a high resounding – “Whaaaat?!!!!”

“Repeat that will you.” The captain commanded coldly.

“I said, I- I am good at swimming…”

“Hah!” The towering man let out an exasperated sigh. “You’re also a failure and you would only bring us to our doom!”

He then looked at his men. “Forget about these three.” As he said that, he pointed the other two.

Aside from me, the other guy was in his uniform and the lone girl was gripping her flute. We only watched as the others were given appropriate clothes, vest, swords and they were even casted with something. I guess that should be some sort of magic enchantment…

In our batch, only the girl who played the flute beautifully wore a full armor set and three soldiers were even assigned as her guards. Another man now clad in silver armor moved towards us.

“You three, move over there.” He pointed a group of soldiers in their bronze plate. “Position your selves in front of them. You are the next ones to set forward!” The man then pushed us making us even stumble. From here on, I knew this was not a dream at all and that I could only go on.

Ensuring that we are positioned in front, the silver armored guy then moved back to his previous position, his red cape even moved as he goes.

Looking at that arrogant back, I wanted to curse. They have brought us here but things were so apparent!  These guys deemed us as useless ones and would willingly throw us as meat shields!

Damn! What a cruel reality this is!

Prologue

The high pitch whistling sound echoed out in the indoor pool area.

Clap! Clap! Clap!

“Excellent Dylan! You have once again broken your record!”

The coach beamed and reached out his hand to help the young man get out of the pool. The youth took his hand. After getting out of the pool, the coach gave him a small towel. Taking the towel with his left hand, his other hand sexily run through his hair. When he looked at the timer the coach showed him, a small smile bloomed in his lips. Finishing three laps on the 20m length pool took him 20.40 seconds!

Gripping the wet towel, he felt good but it was still somehow lacking. He needs to at least reach that 20 second mark so that the gold medal would surely be theirs. He was a perfectionist man and all his record has been first in the 50m freestyle. He was not worried about his own record but he felt worried for the team relay. His goal is for their team to obtain the first rank on the 4x50m freestyle relay. As a graduating senior, this would be his best parting gift.

“Dylan, you could now pack up. Look at your team all lacking stamina now. It would be best that you don’t over train.” The coach reminded as he tapped on the young man’s shoulder. His facial expression tells how proud he is with him.

“Thank you coach, but I will just do one last lap.”

“Hahahaha” The coach gave out a hearty laughter. “Look at your team captain! You should all be like Dylan here.” He then gave another sermon to the teammates who were lying on the wet floor. They clearly have depleted stamina.

“Coach!!!!” The group shouted and instantly sat up as if they were bullied.

“You know captain is a monster! Monster!” The youngest team member voiced out as he points at Dylan.

“Yes coach, I think Captain here was a merman in his past life!” The others seconded

“Hmmm… I guess you guys were right.” The coach also joined in the fun and they all expressed their mirth.

Looking at his team mates who were laughing seated on the wet floor, Dylan revealed a refreshing smile. His team teases him but he still knows they deeply respected him.

“Look at captain smiling! Don’t forget that you still have your crazy stalkers!” The vice-captain reminded seeing that captivating smile.

“Aisst, why was it that captain has it all? I’ll have those nicely formed specs too!” The usually noisy guy in the team stood up and moved near Dylan – trying to compare their features.

“Hahaha” The group once again roared in laughter as the guy only boost up Dylan’s charisma.

“Enough, enough… Go and clean your things. Let’s prepare to go home. Dylan one last lap alright?”

After nodding to the coach, Dylan arranged his goggles. The group then noisily pickup their things and moved towards the changing room.

With three deep breathing exercises, Dylan once again dived down the pool. His beautiful freestyle form was still at its peak. Finishing the three laps, Dylan’s head then popped out of the water only to find a blinding light assaulting his eyes!

Damn! Someone has sneaked inside the pool area again!

He cursed.
