Chapter 6

“According to the results of our research, there is a clear causal relationship between the number of humans who have died inside dungeons since their emergence and the increase in the number of monsters appearing within them.”

Sipping the coffee that had been prepared for us, Yuda-san launched straight into an unexpectedly complicated explanation.

I listened while taking a sip of my own coffee, but honestly, having the main issue dumped on me so suddenly left my brain struggling to keep up. Still, I couldn’t help thinking that what Yuda-san was saying sounded vaguely similar to the kind of chūnibyō-esque setting I’d heard from the Dungeon Master back in the Beginner Dungeon.

“So basically, when an explorer dies inside a dungeon, they turn into a monster?”

Mina-chan boiled down Yuda-san’s complicated explanation and asked for confirmation.

Yeah. I was pretty sure the Loli Goddess had told me something along those lines, too.

“Well, broadly speaking, yes. That understanding is correct. But that’s merely the premise. In fact, in recent years, we’ve proven another important causal relationship that can’t be ignored.”

Yuda-san set his coffee cup down on the table and began fiddling with a small remote control. A moment later, the enormous white wall behind their chair lit up, transforming into a presentation screen covered with graphs, charts, diagrams, and all sorts of other data.

“Let’s see… it should be around here somewhere… Ah, here we go. I want you to look at this.”

Yuda-san pressed the remote a few more times until the desired image appeared. He zoomed it in, then used brightly colored gridlines to circle two particular figures.

“The figure on the left is the country’s total fertility rate thirty years ago, the year dungeons first appeared in this world. The figure on the right is this year’s number. It’s our country’s statistics, by the way, but the trend is the same across the world. I won’t bother explaining what ‘total fertility rate’ means here. You’re all adults, so surely you know, right?”

Ha ha ha! Of course I know!

The total fertility rate is…

“…Uh…”

It’s the approximate number of children a woman has over the course of her lifetime, right?

“Let’s see… The figure on the left is 1.5 from thirty years ago, and the one on the right is… Wait. 0.5?!”

Satsuki-chan stared in shock at just how dramatically the number had fallen.

Huh? Did Satsuki actually understand what the hell “total fertility rate” meant?

That was kind of a blow to my pride…

“That’s strange. These figures are drastically different from the data published by the Ministry of Health.”

“Heh. I didn’t expect someone like you to be so adorably trusting, Kusakabe Shion. You actually believe that collection of blatant lies without questioning it?”

“It’s government data.”

“The moment you slap the word official on something, the ignorant masses stop caring about whether the evidence is actually credible.”

I was impressed by the sheer amount of knowledge Shion possessed, but Yuda-san spoke of government statistics as though they were nothing more than an enormous pile of lies, practically sneering at her for believing them.

Shion’s expression darkened slightly.

Wait, wait. By that logic, shouldn’t Yuda-san’s numbers be just as unreliable?

Personally, I still trusted government statistics more.

“Isn’t it simply because everyone’s been saying we’re suffering from a declining birthrate for years? Why would that be unusual?”

Mina-chan offered a perfectly reasonable take.

Exactly.

The country’s population had been declining for years. There is nothing particularly strange about a number like that.

“It has declined far too much. The drop has deviated drastically from the range of decline that the government had originally been adjusting for. As people die inside dungeons and the number of monsters increases, the relative likelihood of humans being born has also decreased. The causal relationship is undeniable, and it was clearly something we never anticipated.”

Yuda-san had been throwing one outrageous statement after another at us.

Government statistics were fabricated, and the birthrate had been deliberately adjusted?

If what Yuda-san was saying was true, that would mean the government had been intentionally promoting population decline… could something like that really be possible?

Yuda-san continued their explanation.

“Furthermore, the number of dungeons themselves has continued to increase year after year. Based on these facts, we have reached one simple conclusion: The world is on the verge of destruction because of dungeons, so we need to destroy every last one of them.”

Yuda-san finished speaking while staring expressionlessly at the coffee that had long since stopped steaming.

His face was like an iron mask. It was… kind of intimidating.

“Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that what you’re saying is true. Wouldn’t the obvious solution be to simply stop sending explorers into dungeons in the first place? Isn’t managing things like that supposed to be the Guild’s job?”

Mina-chan pressed Yuda-san even harder, firing off her criticism without letting up.

And honestly, she had a point. If nobody went into dungeons, nobody would die in them.

Come on, Guild! Do your job!

“It isn’t that simple, Kisaragi Mina. The resources obtained from dungeons are extremely valuable. They’ve allowed humanity to solve, almost overnight, energy and environmental problems that had remained unsolved for generations. If explorers disappeared, that entire supply would vanish. Humanity would once again be forced to spend its time arguing over problems we can no longer solve.”

So… basically, if there were no explorers, everyone would be screwed?

Yuda-san had a habit of talking in such roundabout ways that my brain could barely keep up.

Ugh…

Judging by the way they were continuing, this wasn’t going to end anytime soon.

I am starting to get sleepy.

Could we please wrap this up already?

“Until now, the acquisition of resources has always taken priority over human lives. The Guild’s true purpose was to continue producing capable explorers and have them extract ever greater quantities of resources. To accomplish that, we created a system resembling a game, dulled people’s fear of death, and turned dungeon exploration into a desirable profession.

“But in the end… that was a failure.”

Yuda-san drained the rest of their cold coffee in a single gulp.

Apparently, the speech is  still going.

Yaaawn…

Ah, crap. I actually yawned.

“At this rate, humanity will eventually perish. So we gathered together the vast amount of data we had accumulated from countless explorers and succeeded in creating a single experimental subject—one designed specifically for the purpose of destroying dungeons.”

“[Yaaawn…] Huh? W-Wait, don’t tell me…”

I’d been listening absentmindedly, but those words instantly woke me up.

An experimental subject… it’s that guy, right?

“You have someone in mind, don’t you, Daishi Ajiri?”

Yuda grinned. It was a knowing, deeply unpleasant smile.

“Yes. That experimental subject… was the Hero. Right?”

Chapter 5

After being escorted out of the hotel by the black-clad staff and driven away in a luxury black car, it took us roughly fifteen minutes to reach our destination.

We had arrived at Guild Headquarters.

“Whoa… Guild Headquarters is huge.”

The car hadn’t stopped at the main entrance, but rather at a rear entrance reserved exclusively for Guild executives and officials. The moment I stepped out, I tilted my head back and stared up at the ridiculously enormous skyscraper, my mouth hanging open.

I guess this is an expected reaction. This is my first time here after all.

The building is so tall that I couldn’t even see the top when standing directly beneath it.

How much money had they spent building this thing?

I couldn’t even begin to imagine.

“This is actually my first time entering Guild Headquarters through anything other than the main entrance.”

Mina-chan stepped out of the car after me, looking slightly tense. Apparently, even veteran explorers rarely had any reason to use the back entrance of Guild Headquarters.

“This is the VIP entrance, right? Kinda exciting!”

Satsuki-chan followed.

Unlike Mina-chan, she seemed pretty carefree about it. But apparently, this is her first time seeing the rear entrance as well. She looked around curiously, turning her head from side to side as she took in the surroundings.

“Stay alert. We’re not here on vacation.”

“SHAAAAAAAAAA!”

Shion was the last to step out, Ryunosuke-kun cradled in her arms.

And with that, all five of us had assembled in front of the rear entrance to Guild Headquarters.

“You’re all here. Excellent. Please, follow me.”

Once again, we were escorted through the rear entrance of Guild Headquarters by the men and women in black.

We proceeded down a dimly lit corridor that nevertheless radiated an unmistakable air of luxury. After a short walk, the black-clad escort leading us stopped in front of a set of doors that were obviously elevator doors.

He immediately pressed the button to go up, and the mechanical doors slowly slid open.

“This elevator is configured to go directly to the Chairman’s office. You will not encounter any other Guild employees or explorers along the way, so please rest assured.”

The escort held the elevator doors open and gestured for us to step inside. They’d clearly gone to great lengths to accommodate us.

I had to admit, I was genuinely impressed by how carefully Yuda-san had arranged everything.

Maybe he was our enemy. But from the moment we left the Funeral Rank dungeon until now, not once had we been treated unpleasantly. Maybe this was all part of some elaborate scheme to lull us into lowering our guard.

Even so, I couldn’t say I disliked it.

“Thanks for everything, Black Suit-san!”

“Huh? Oh, uh… It’s nothing. It’s just my job…”

The escort didn’t board the elevator with us. Only the five of us entered the lift, heading straight for the Chairman’s office on the top floor.

“Why did you thank him, Daishi-san?”

“Eh? I dunno. Just felt like it.”

“What an incredibly fast elevator. We’re almost there.”

The sensation of upward acceleration gradually weakened as we approached the top floor.

Then, with a rather silly little “ding-dong” sound, the elevator came to a stop.

The doors quietly slid open.

“Whoa! This place sure is huge!”

The moment the elevator doors opened, my entire field of vision cleared. I could see almost the whole room at a glance, and it immediately became obvious that this was a massive executive conference room.

A gigantic table and a series of imposing chairs were arranged in perfect order, giving the entire place an unmistakable air of authority.

And at the very far end of the room sat a single man, lounging comfortably in a chair that looked more like a throne.

With a pleasant smile, he spoke to us.

“Hello. I’m glad you came, Daishi Ajiri… and all of you as well.”

“Y-You’re…”

“Yes. My name is Yuda Kagami. I serve as the representative of the Far Eastern Headquarters of the Japan Dungeon Association.”

With that, Yuda-san stood and slowly walked toward us, approaching the elevator where we were gathered. As he drew closer, his appearance and stature gradually came into sharper focus.

His age was… Hmm. He looked young, yet there was something about him that suggested considerable experience. It was difficult to tell.

His voice was fairly high, too. If someone had told me it belonged to a woman, I probably would have believed them. He was about as tall as Mina, which was rather short for a man. His build was slender and graceful. His blond hair fell to his shoulders in a medium-length style. Large red eyes, a finely shaped nose, small lips painted with pale pink lipstick…

Wait. Hold on.

Could Yuda actually be…

“You’re… a woman?”

“Daishi Ajiri. In this day and age, I recommend refraining from making assumptions about another person’s gender. It isn’t particularly important.”

For just a moment, I thought I saw a hint of anger in Yuda-san’s expression.

Apparently, gender was a taboo subject here.

“Hahaha. Well, never mind. Come on, sit wherever you like. And don’t worry about how unnecessarily enormous this room is.”

Yuda-san spread both arms, making a slightly exaggerated gesture as they invited us to take our seats.

Even so, the situation remained what it was. The supreme leader of our supposed enemy was sitting right in front of us.

There was no way I could let my guard down.

“How about something to drink? Coffee? Tea? Just tell me what you like, and I’ll have it brought in immediately.”

“We don’t need anything to drink. I’d rather we get straight to the point.”

“You’re rather impatient, Daishi Ajiri. Surely you can indulge me in a cup of tea. It’s our first meeting, after all. The coffee and tea here at Headquarters are excellent.”

“Then I want royal milk tea!”

“I’ll have coffee. And milk for Ryunosuke.”

“You guys really have zero sense of tension, don’t you? Water is fine for me.”

I suddenly felt embarrassed, like I was the only one freaking out over this. My companions had already begun taking their seats and ordering drinks without a care in the world.

“Heh. Your companions certainly have nerves of steel. That’s reassuring. Daishi, coffee for you?”

“Ah, um… Sure. I’ll have that.”

Unable to go against the flow, I ordered coffee.

Yuda-san picked up the intercom handset mounted on the wall and instructed someone to bring our drinks to the chairman’s office.

“Well then. While we wait for the drinks, why don’t I at least explain why I invited all of you here today?”

Once Yuda-san and I had taken our seats, they suddenly got straight to the point. Despite everything, we were finally getting down to business, and I could feel myself growing a little tense.

Why had Guild Headquarters summoned us here?

What, exactly, did they want?

“Well, to put it simply, the world is currently on the verge of destruction because of the existence of dungeons. So, we’d like you to cooperate with us in our Great Dungeon Eradication Operation.”

“““…Haaaaah?!”””

All of us voiced the exact same bewildered “Haaaaah?!” at precisely the same time.

The Great Dungeon Eradication Operation?!

…Yeah, right. That’s definitely not something you could explain by simply saying, “To put it simply.”

Chapter 4

## The Burial Priest Old Man — Waiting Room for the Stream, Part 5

34: (Anonymous)

When are they bringing the stream back?

35:

I’m suffering from old-man deficiency over here.

36:

I watched some other dungeon streams to kill time, but they’re boring as hell.

Bring him back already.

37:

Get your shit together, stream operators.

38:

Seriously, why did the stream stop?

Server crash?

39:

It was just suddenly cut out, right?

40:

That stream had been overcoming every conceivable obstacle in the dungeon.

Something seriously unavoidable must have happened.

41:

Did they get hacked?

42:

Guild Headquarters, maybe?

43:

There were 20 million concurrent viewers. How the hell does nobody know what happened?

44:

>>@43

Check the other threads and social media.

The prevailing theory is that Guild Headquarters forcibly shut it down.

45:

Well, I guess that’s what happens when something gets that viral.

46:

But seriously, did the old man and the others even do anything wrong?

They were just clearing a dungeon.

47:

Not exactly what I’d call “just” clearing a dungeon.

48:

The Dungeon Master is involved, after all.

The Guild is probably taking this seriously.

49:

What the hell was that Hero supposed to be, anyway?

Pretty sure he was an agent sent by the Guild, though.

50:

All he did was get in their way.

That guy was seriously annoying.

51:

Come to think of it, an AI Hero doesn’t even make sense.

What is this, a fucking sci-fi movie?

52:

His objective was never really clear.

It felt like a bunch of things were mixed together—personal grudges, whatever the Guild was planning, and so on.

53:

The original guy seemed like some ordinary corporate slave, though.

Does anyone know who that guy was?

54:

>>@53

Information about him is actually going around on social media right now.

No idea if it’s legit, though.

55:

Mikami Kira, 25.

56:

A University of Tokyo graduate?

Damn, he was smart.

57:

Apparently he worked in the systems development division at Guild Headquarters.

58:

Huh?

So he was one of those elite bastards who managed to squeeze through that insanely competitive, 1-in-1,000 hiring process.

59:

Guild Headquarters is crazy popular. Hard as hell to get hired there.

And they barely hire anyone.

So Kira was the guy who created the AI Hero?

60:

Who knows.

He might’ve just been managing it.

61:

Apparently, what Mikami really wanted to become was an explorer.

He gave up because he didn’t have the aptitude.

That’s just stuff I’ve seen on social media, though, so who knows if it’s true.

62:

Being smart doesn’t mean you can become an explorer.

63:

Sounds like his personal feelings probably played into all this, too.

64:

When you look at it that way, I kinda feel sorry for him.

65:

That Hell Gate was way too fucking much lol

66:

Nah, the dude was such an asshole that he brought it on himself.

Besides, being smart and getting a massive advantage from your parents is already winning the genetic lottery.

Meanwhile, the rest of us…

67:

>>@66

Dude, that’s depressing. Stop lol.

68:

So what does the Guild actually want?

Get rid of the old man? Destroy the Dungeon Master?

69:

I still wanna know what that big revelation the Dungeon Master supposedly told the old man was.

He said he was going to explain it, then never did shit lol.

70:

I don’t even really understand what the Dungeon Master and the Guild’s respective positions are.

Wait, is the Dungeon Master a god or something?

71:

Once the stream comes back, we should ask Daishi again.

I want him to enable Super Chats, though.

I’ll pay whatever.

72:

>>@71

Exactly.

I think that old man genuinely has no idea how to set that stuff up lol.

73:

Satsuki or Mina should teach him already.

74:

>>@68

The most popular theory is that the old man is going to become the Dungeon Master’s successor and try to wipe out humanity, so the Guild is desperately pulling all kinds of strings to stop him.

75:

The old man is the Dungeon Master’s successor?

76:

Well, there might actually be something to that.

That guy is way beyond the level of an ordinary explorer lol.

77:

Forget “monster.”

He’s basically a god.

78:

There’s no way the old man is actually thinking about humanity and all that.

79:

So… an unwitting mastermind type?

80:

So, he was just out there exploring normally, and somehow humanity ended up going extinct?

81:

A massive-scale version of “Did I accidentally do something awesome?”

82:

What an unbelievably troublesome guy lol

83:

It’s just speculation.

We have no idea what the truth actually is.

84:

Still, it sounds pretty plausible lol

85:

Can they hurry up and bring the stream back?

I wanna see what happens next so badly I can’t sleep.

86:

What happened to Satsuki-chan’s panties?!

87:

>>@86

Who gives a shit about that? lol

88:

I still have no idea what position the old man, the Underworld King, is supposed to be in.

89:

>>@88

At this point, we don’t even know if he’s an enemy or an ally.

90:

He doesn’t seem like a bad guy, though.

91:

That old man definitely seems to have a lot of baggage.

92:

Think he’ll join the party once they clear the Nether Class dungeon?

93:

Otin briefly joined them, too.

94:

Otin…

95:

We lost a good man.

96:

They can just use 【Return】 if they wanna see him again.

97:

【Return】 is so fucking broken that at this point I don’t even feel sad when someone dies lol

98:

Edo Tensei.

99:

>>@98

They haven’t actually summoned a dead person yet, have they?

There’s still a tiny chance we might get zombies out of it.

100:

They absolutely need to try that next time. I’d love to see the results.

101:

When’s the stream coming back?!

102:

Oh, new info.

Apparently the old man and the others were taken to Guild Headquarters by the guys in black.

103:

Huh?

Wait, did they get arrested?!

104:

Their destination was Grand Hills Tokyo.

105:

What?

That’s the ultra-luxurious five-star hotel directly operated by Guild Headquarters!

106:

Wait, who the hell got that information? lol

Could be fake news.

107:

A few videos have already been uploaded.

From what I’ve seen, it looks legit.

108:

Could someone really film them that easily?

The security around Guild Headquarters is insane.

Gotta be bullshit.

109:

Maybe they’re deliberately letting people film it?

110:

The old man’s gotten way too famous.

Maybe they’re deliberately showing that they’re handling everything properly so they don’t cause another scandal.

111:

But why a hotel?

112:

Negotiations? A meeting?

113:

Are they trying to win them over with money and some serious hospitality?

114:

>>@113

That’s diabolical.

They’ll probably succumb to it.

115:

Someone please film the inside of the hotel too!

116:

Streaming is prohibited inside Guild-related facilities.

117:

Wish someone would secretly do it anyway…

118:

Guess I should just go to sleep for today.

119:

I’ve been following this in real time the whole time, so I’m exhausted.

I’m logging off for now.

120:

Please let the stream come back soon!

Datsusara Souryo no Danjon Sousou Haishin

Chapter 3

I slowly lowered myself into the lukewarm bath, planning to relax completely while watching some anime on the bathroom TV. But, of course, things didn’t work out that way. I’m only given ten minutes to use the bathroom.

So I hurriedly covered myself in soap, blasted everything off with a hot shower, and rushed out of the bath.

“You’re late, Daishi-san. Now, sit down. We’re starting the strategy meeting.”

I’d gotten dressed again in record time and hurried into the living room, vigorously rubbing my hair dry with a towel as I joined everyone else. Yet despite that, I turned to be still a little late because Mina-chan immediately scolded me.

Come on. Ten minutes was impossible!

I hadn’t even had time to dry my hair properly.

Incidentally, my clothes had been neatly folded and placed in the washroom, looking practically brand-new. Every trace of sweat, age, and even fart-related odors had been completely eliminated, replaced by the pleasant scent of floral fabric softener.

True to her word, Mina-chan had somehow finished the job while I was taking my ridiculously short bath. I had no idea what method she’d used, but judging by the results, I had absolutely no complaints.

“Well then, shall we review our current combat capabilities? First, Daishi Ajiri.”

“…Hm?”

I had just put my lips to the bottle of water sitting on the table when Shion-san suddenly directed the conversation toward me.

Come on, give me a little time to relax after getting out of the bath!

“Could you explain your stats and skills to us again?”

“Huh?”

Now?

I mean, hadn’t I already explained them here and there?

Then again, most of those explanations had probably been more for the viewers’ benefit. I hadn’t really sat down and gone over everything with the others directly. I’d picked up quite a few new skills since then too. My stats had also reached the point where even I barely understood what the numbers meant anymore.

So, for my own sake, it probably wouldn’t hurt to take stock of everything and get my head organized.

“We already know that Daishi-san is a “monster” who’s surpassed even monsters. However, we’d like to share information about your abilities so we can figure out our strategy and everything.”

There she went again, somehow managing to hurt my feelings with her choice of words.

A monster who’s surpassed even monsters?

That was just a metaphor, right?

…Right?

Wait. Did they actually think I was a real monster?

“Well, it’ll definitely make it easier to come up with a strategy if everyone knows what each of us can do! Got it! Just give me a second.”

Yeah, whatever. That could wait.

For now—

Status, open!

Looking over my status carefully again, I had to admit…

My stats really were completely ridiculous.

Oh, right. I’d completely forgotten that I could allocate my surplus Burial Points. I’ll think about how to distribute them properly once our meeting is over. Although… if possible, I want to do that event together with the viewers.

Unfortunately, streaming was strictly prohibited in this hotel and all Guild-related facilities, so I’d have to wait until we were somewhere I could stream again before allocating the points.

“Could you write everything down on this sheet of paper? We can’t see your status screen, after all.”

“Sure thing.”

I copied all my stats onto the large sheet of paper Mina-chan had handed me.

Seeing everything written out like this somehow made my sheer abnormality stand out even more.

“T-that really is monstrous…”

“Y-yeah. It’s so far beyond the norm that it’s almost laughable…”

“Are these numbers actually real? You’re not making any of this up, are you, Daishi-san?”

“Brrrrr…..”

Everyone stared at my revealed stats and skills in stunned silence.

Wait… Ryunosuke can read?!

It was shaking its head, too.

“It’s all real! Do you want me to write down the effects of all the skills, too?”

“Y-yes… Please do.”

Shion-san was actually speaking politely to me now.

Could it be that seeing my stats laid out like this had finally earned me a little respect?

If so, then all this writing had definitely been worth it!

Come on, everyone. Show a little more respect for your elders!

I am technically the oldest one here, after all!

“All right, I’ll write it all down. Oh, and since we don’t want to waste time, why don’t you guys write down your own stats, too? We can compare everything side by side and come up with a strategy!”

“Y-Yeah… I suppose…”

“I really, really don’t want to write mine down…”

“I’m an S-ranker, you know!”

“Kuuuun…”

Yes! I’d come up with a surprisingly sensible proposal for once!

We didn’t have time to waste!

Come on, everyone—get those hands moving!

But for some reason, nobody besides me seemed particularly enthusiastic about the idea.

Why was that?

Well, whatever!

We’d lay out everyone’s abilities on the table, put our heads together, and devise a strategy to overcome whatever challenges lay ahead!

◆◆◆

“All right. I think we’ve got a pretty good handle on our current combat strength and how we’re going to fight from here on out.”

“W-well, I’m a healer, so I’m going to be pretty valuable, right?”

“I-I’m fairly versatile for an explorer too, so… I should be useful as the party’s all-purpose problem solver, right?”

“SHAAAAAA!!”

After having everyone go over their stats and abilities again, everything suddenly became much clearer in my head.

It had been a productive meeting. We’d given ourselves a lot more options when it came to how we would approach the battles ahead.

In short, the discussion had resulted in the following:

* From now on, the five of us would operate as a proper party, maintaining formation and coordinating our attacks.

* Shion-san, Ryunosuke-kun, and I would serve as the front line, taking the role of tanks and direct combatants.

* Mina-chan and Satsuki-chan would remain in the rear, handling support and healing.

* Since I possessed a large number of unusual skills, I needed to think carefully before using them.

* As the oldest “and strongest” member of the party, I am absolutely responsible for protecting everyone, no matter what happened.

* I am not allowed to put unnecessary things in my Itembox. (Underwear, for example.)

* I am not allowed to use 【Clairvoyance】 to pry into the girls’ pasts.

…and so on.

“One last thing. And this is important. I’m mainly saying this to the old man, but Mina and Satsuki, you’d better take this to heart as well.”

“Oh, that.”

“Yeah, I know!”

“Huh? What? What are you talking about?”

What was this about?

Was there something else important we needed to discuss besides everything we’d just gone over?

“Never use your skills on the surface. Using skills anywhere outside a dungeon is considered a serious criminal offense.”

“…Huh? Seriously?”

“That’s right. Though, considering we’re already being treated like a bunch of potential criminals, I guess it’s a little late to worry about it now.”

“If you use a skill under the current circumstances, they’ll probably send in the military.”

Good thing they told me. I’d actually been thinking about using 【Return】 right then and there to designate this place as a new return point.

Well, it made sense. If people could freely use powers this dangerous anywhere they wanted, society would probably collapse overnight.

It was only natural that there’d be laws against it.

Brrrrrrr… Brrrrrrr…

Suddenly, the intercom built into the room began ringing.

“Yes, hello?”

“Ajiri-dono? Your transportation is ready. We’ll be departing for Guild Headquarters now, so please make your way down.”

“Understood. I’ll be right there.”

It seemed the time had flown by. When I glanced at the clock, it was already 8:00 a.m.

Right on the dot, without even a second of deviation, the doorbell to the suite rang and the black-clad staff member arrived to escort us.

I immediately answered, ending the audio and video connection.

“It’s finally time…”

I thought I heard Satsuki audibly swallow.

The tension in the room was steadily rising.

“Daishi-san, just like we discussed, make sure you listen carefully to what Yuda-san has to say first. I highly doubt they’ll attack us the moment we arrive.”

Mina-chan reminded me of one of the most important points from our strategy meeting.

Yeah. The fact that Guild Headquarters had gone to the trouble of arranging this kind of formal escort made me pretty sure they had something they wanted from us—most likely a negotiation, or perhaps a request. So there was no way they’d simply slaughter us the moment we stepped inside Headquarters.

Talking things out had to come first.

“If I determine that the situation has clearly turned against us, I’ll give you a signal. When that happens…”

“Full release of our skills, right?”

“Exactly. We’ll tear the place apart and retreat with everything we’ve got.”

I understood what Shion-san was getting at. The agreement not to use our skills only applied as long as negotiations went smoothly. If things turned into a matter of life and death, we wouldn’t hesitate to resort to force.

Hopefully, it wouldn’t come to that.

“SHAAAAAAAAAA! (LET’S GOOOOOO!!)”

Ryunosuke-kun was fired up and ready for battle. For some reason, its roar sounded suspiciously like something straight out of a super-robot anime.

But that was probably just my imagination.

“All right! Let’s go, everyone!”

And so, the stage was finally set to shift to the enemy’s very own stronghold, the Guild Headquarters.

Datsusara Souryo no Danjon Sousou Haishin

Chapter 2

My head felt unbearably heavy, and even opening my eyes is a struggle.

“God, my head hurts… Ugh…. I feel like crap…”

I tried to sit up, but my entire body felt as heavy as lead. A sharp headache stabbed through my skull, and every time my pulse throbbed inside my head, the nausea grew worse.

“Did I… drink too much…?”

I tried to search through my hazy memories, but I couldn’t remember a thing about last night.

Well, technically, I did remember one thing.

After the toast, I had downed three large mugs of draft beer in rapid succession. Everything after that was a complete blank. It was like I’d been watching some painfully boring late-night anime and simply fallen asleep halfway through it. So I had absolutely no idea how I’d even made it to this room.

“Where… am I…?”

I somehow managed to force myself upright despite the crushing headache and overwhelming nausea, then looked around.

“W-what the hell is this place…?”

I felt absolutely miserable, but the sheer extravagance of the room that greeted my eyes somehow cleared my head a little.

As my memories from before I started drinking gradually came back into focus, I began to piece together my current situation. This is probably one of the guest rooms at the Guild Headquarters’ directly operated ultra-luxurious five-star hotel, Grand Hills Tokyo.

And judging from the room itself, this is probably their highest-grade Deluxe Suite. The sheer size of the bedroom and the luxury of its furnishings were on an entirely different level from an ordinary hotel room. Even the bed was enormous when I looked at it closely, while the feel of the sheets against my skin and the way they molded perfectly to my body were in a league of their own.

“Damn… this is one hell of a room… Ugh, my head hurts… I need something to drink…”

Unfortunately, I am in absolutely no condition to appreciate any of it. The alcohol still hadn’t completely left my system. I need to drink some water to dilute the alcohol in my bloodstream even a little.

Holding my aching head, I pulled back the covers and get out of bed.

“!?”

I noticed that something is wrong almost immediately.

No, not immediately.

My senses had been too hazy to notice until I pulled back the covers. It was only when a faint breeze from the air conditioner brushed coldly across my skin that I realized it.

I am completely naked.

“…Huh? Wait. Did I get so drunk that I stripped everything off?”

I had been sleeping on the far left side of the absurdly enormous bed—big enough to comfortably fit three adults. I glanced down beside the bed, searching for my clothes, and immediately found them.

My slightly grimy Twilight Robe, my boxer shorts, and the rest of my things were scattered carelessly across the floor.

They were obviously mine.

Of course, I had absolutely no memory of when—or how—I’d taken them off.

“I really got carried away and drank myself into a stupid state…”

“Mmm… nnngh…”

“!?”

…Huh?

The bed was so ridiculously huge that I hadn’t noticed. There was someone else on the far right side of the bed!

W-whaaaaat the?!

Don’t tell me I…

I had my first ever morning-after incident?!

“Fwaaah… Ah! Daishi-san! You’re awake?”

“S-Satsuki-chan…?”

“Honestly! You got completely carried away and drank way, way too much! Seriously! After that, it was such a pain to— Wait, KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!”

I had thrown all the covers aside. And for some reason, I was giving Satsuki—who had apparently been sleeping beside me—a full view of my birthday suit.

Huh? But something felt…

This was a seriously strange reaction for a “morning-after” situation.

“What happened?! Is everything all right?! …Hm?”

“Satsuki?! What’s wrong?! …Eh?”

“SHAAAAAA!! …Sha?”

Apparently, this suite had a living room separate from the bedroom. Shion-san, Mina-chan, and Ryunosuke—who had, for some reason, been in there—immediately came rushing in after hearing Satsuki scream.

The scene they found was me, a completely naked grown man, and a girl covering her face while screaming.

Objectively speaking, this looked really, really bad.

“Ah, no. This is…”

“I have no idea why you stripped and left your clothes lying around, but why don’t you just go take a bath as you are?”

“Yeah. We already had ours ages ago. You passed out drunk and went straight to sleep, so you’re pretty filthy right now, Daishi-san.”

“SHAAAAA!! (Stinky, stinky, stinky)!”

…Huh?

Shion-san and Mina-chan were surprisingly calm.

They weren’t going, “What the hell are you doing, old man?! You pervert!!” or anything?

“Ah, I was just a little surprised because you were suddenly naked, but it’s really fine! Everyone was worried about you, so we took turns looking after you!”

Satsuki-chan turned her back to me and sat down again, finally regaining her composure.

So everyone had been taking care of me…

Incidentally, aside from naked me, everyone else was wearing what looked like expensive hotel-provided nightwear—something along the lines of elegant negligees. They were all dressed comfortably and casually, looking completely different from how they had in the dungeon, and I couldn’t help feeling a little flustered.

“Huh? So that’s what happened…”

“Yep! I was tired too, and it was a little cold, so I thought I’d just get under the covers for a minute… and then I ended up falling asleep.”

“…Sorry about that.”

I was genuinely, deeply relieved to learn that I hadn’t done anything stupid while drunk. Thank God I wasn’t about to get arrested over some non-consensual-whatever situation.

“But Daishi-san, you look absolutely terrible. Is the alcohol still in your system?”

“Y-Yeah… (*urp)…”

Mina walked over to me while I hurriedly pulled the covers back over myself to hide my naked body.

Apparently, she could tell immediately that I was having hungover.

“Honestly. This is why adults…”

“?”

“Drink this.”

Mina-chan pulled a tablet from what appeared to be a pocket in her negligee and handed it to me.

“If the toxins in your system are alcohol-related, this should break them down immediately. Chew it thoroughly before swallowing.”

Just what I’d expect from Mina-chan, our resident healer. She’d actually prepared medicine in advance, taking my condition into account. That was seriously thoughtful of her.

Still, I had to admit—I wasn’t a fan of chewing tablets. Doing that while I was still nauseous sounded less like treatment and more like torture.

“Uh, y-yeah… but I still feel really sick…”

“Enough complaining. Hurry up and take it.”

“Y-Yes, ma’am!”

The pressure in her voice left me with no room to argue, so I did exactly as I was told.

Fighting back the urge to throw up, I somehow managed to chew the medicine and swallow it.

Ugh… I feel awfu—

…Wait.

I don’t feel awful now?!

No way! Even my headache was gone!

“What the heck is this medicine? It’s amazing!”

“You’re better now, right? Then hurry up and take a bath. Get yourself properly awake. We still have some time before we leave for Guild Headquarters.”

There was a digital clock built into the headboard above the pillows, so I checked the time.

5:30 a.m.

“We’ve been told that someone in black will come to take us at eight. Before then, we should discuss what we intend to do next. That is why we are gathered in this room.”

Shion-san’s explanation instantly snapped me out of party mode and back into serious mode.

Ah. So that was what this was about.

Right. We weren’t here for a relaxing vacation!

This was enemy territory!

I needed to stay sharp!

“We didn’t really have time to sit down and talk properly while we were in the Nether Class dungeon. I think everyone’s had a chance to recover and clear their heads now, so first things first—strategy meeting!”

Satsuki-chan, standing beside Mina-chan, clenched her fist with renewed determination.

Obviously, we couldn’t just go meet the head of the Guild without any kind of plan!

All right! Then I’d better hurry up, take a bath, and get myself cleaned up!

“While Daishi-san is in the bath, why don’t the rest of us get our combat preparations in order as well? Oh, and don’t worry about your filthy, stinky clothes. I’ll make sure to get them nice and clean for you!”

“R-Right…”

I had no idea what kind of secret technique Mina-chan intended to use, but apparently, she’s going to wash my clothes at high speed or something.

Filthy and stinky…

Well, I couldn’t exactly deny it.

Still… That kind of hurt a little.

Chapter 1

Grand Hills Tokyo, a super-luxury five-star hotel directly managed by the guild headquarters.

On the hotel’s fifth floor was the Peacock Hall. In the center of the grand banquet hall, surrounded by an array of dazzling, majestic furnishings, sat me, Satsuki-chan, Mina-chan, Shion-san, and Ryunosuke.

“Isn’t this place a little too big? I can’t relax at all…”

We were seated around an elaborately designed rotating round table. At its center stood an enormous dragon ornament, a crystal clenched in its jaws.

Incidentally, aside from us, the only other people present were a handful of hotel staff. Not a single other guest occupied the hall. The entire place had been prepared solely to entertain us.

“Uurrrrrr…”

“Hey, Ryunosuke. Behave yourself.”

Whether it was some kind of instinctive rivalry between dragons or something else entirely, Ryunosuke let out a low growl at the dragon ornament, earning himself a mild scolding from Shion-san.

Of course, under normal circumstances, monsters weren’t allowed inside hotels. But Yuda had exercised his authority as the Guild Chief, and Ryunosuke had been granted special permission to accompany us. After everything we’d been through exploring the dungeon together, there was no way I could have left Ryunosuke behind in the Funeral Rank dungeon all by himself.

So I was genuinely grateful for the consideration.

Thank you, Yuda-san!

“Then allow us to bring out your meal. We’ll arrange a selection of dishes on the table, but if there’s anything you’d like, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are fully prepared to accommodate any request.”

The woman in the black uniform standing nearby explained everything with impeccable politeness. That was right—we were about to have a very late dinner. After leaving the Nether-class dungeon, we’d been escorted into a fleet of black luxury cars prepared by the staff and brought straight to this hotel. I am completely exhausted, and honestly, I would have preferred to take a bath and go straight to bed. But the girls had immediately declared, “Food first!”, with far more enthusiasm than I’d expected.

Unable to resist the momentum, I’d ended up agreeing to eat before getting any rest.

“Whoa! Hey, hey, Mina! Isn’t that the A9-ranked thing?”

“You’re right! Oh! Satsuki! Wait, isn’t that thing over there… that thing?”

“Whoa! That’s insane! No way! That’s totally that, right?”

“Isn’t this seriously crazy?”

“This is next-level crazy!!”

The girls’ eyes sparkled as one luxurious-looking dish after another was carried to the table. Satsuki-chan and Mina-chan, in particular, were so excited that they’d reached the point where I honestly couldn’t understand a single thing they were saying.

That thing?

And it’s seriously, totally crazy?

What the heck are they talking about?!

“Ajiri-san, what would you like to drink?”

“Uh, um…”

The woman in black handed me the alcohol menu, but everything on it was written in words that definitely weren’t Japanese, so I couldn’t read a damn thing.

I was sure it was packed with rows upon rows of expensive wines that would make rich people drool, but I’d spent my entire life as nothing more than an overworked corporate drone. There was no way I knew anything about fine wines—the varieties, the flavors, any of it.

Which meant, naturally, that the very first alcoholic drink I’ll order is…

“Do you have draft beer? Super Dry.”

“Of course. Would you like a medium?”

“Large!”

“I’ll have the same.”

“YEAHHH!”

Shion-san decided to copy my order and got a large draft beer as well.

No matter how fancy the restaurant was, you just had to start with beer, right?!

“I’ll have a fresh green banana juice! Mina, what about you?”

“I think I’ll have a freshly squeezed mango-orange juice.”

Satsuki-chan and Mina-chan were looking over the menu for minors and ordering juice.Unlike Shion-san and me, they weren’t allowed to drink alcohol, after all.

“U-Uhm… and what would the dragon, uh… like to drink?”

Apparently, she had never had to serve a dragon before. A look of unmistakable tension crossed the woman in black’s face.

“Hm? Don’t worry about him. I’ll take care of him, so you can just ignore him.”

“Grrrrrrrr…”

“H-hiik!”

Shion-san gently stroked Ryunosuke’s head as he continued to growl, adding a few words that spared the woman in black from having to deal with him. I mean, it wasn’t like he was a dog or a cat.

The poor woman was clearly terrified.

Well… that was only natural. Unless you were an explorer, you’d probably go your entire life without ever seeing a real dragon.

“U-Understood. I shall bring your drinks shortly, so please wait just a moment.”

Having finished taking our orders, the woman in black practically fled toward the back of the hall.

She’d seemed perfectly calm at first, but I guess Ryunosuke had actually scared her pretty badly.

It wasn’t like he’d done anything particularly wrong, but somehow, I still felt like we’d done something terrible.

Sorry for that, Miss Lady-in-Black.

◆◆◆

“Daishi, we’d like you to lead the toast!”

Everyone except Ryunosuke had a drink in hand, and Mina-chan raised her glass of juice, apparently expecting me to fulfill my duties as the organizer.

Was that really necessary?

We were all exhausted. Couldn’t we just eat, drink, take a bath, and go to bed?

“Nah, you guys can just start without me…”

“That’s exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about, Daishi-san!”

“Huh??”

What exactly is it about me that she’s talking about, Satsuki…?

She, too, had raised her beer mug and was standing there, waiting for the toast.

“She’s right. We’ve finally reached the end of all this. Don’t you think you should at least say a few words?”

“Shyaaaaa!”

Even Shion-san and Ryunosuke were joining in…

Well, Ryunosuke didn’t exactly have a glass to raise, so I guess he was just roaring along to get into the spirit of things.

Honestly, what was with everyone…?

Anyways…

“Ahem! Well then, since I’ve been nominated, if I may be so bold, I, Daishi Ajiri, shall have the honor of leading us in the toast!”

If they told me to do it, I had no choice. I stood up with my large beer mug in hand, extending my arm as I prepared to make the toast.

“Ooh! Look at you! You actually look the part!”

“Hey, don’t make fun of me, kid.”

I’d spent fifteen years as a corporate wage slave, after all. I was actually pretty accustomed to leading toasts at drinking parties.

But…

“Uh, well… I’m just really glad everyone made it out alive! Yeah! Cheers!”

“Cheers!!”

Just because I had experience didn’t mean I was particularly good at giving speeches. Still, nobody seemed to mind, and the banquet got underway without a hitch, much to my relief.

Truth be told, I’d considered saying something along the lines of, “Don’t let your guard down—we’re still in enemy territory.” But I decided against it. This was supposed to be a celebration. There was no reason to spoil it by saying something tactless before the party had even started.

As long as I stayed vigilant, that was all that mattered. If anything happened, I’d protect everyone. There was no need for anyone else to keep their guard up. I want them to forget their worries and simply enjoy themselves to their hearts’ content.

“Gulp, gulp, gulp… Haaaaaah!! That hits the spot!!”

Man, beer really was the best!!

…Eh!?

I got carried away and somehow downed the entire large mug of draft beer in one go!

Whoa! Bad, bad! We’re in enemy territory!

I need to stay—stay on my guard…

“Miss, another large draft beer, please!!”

Nah, come on. I worked my ass off, didn’t I? Surely I’m allowed to enjoy at least this much. Besides, I’ve got a strong tolerance for alcohol, so I’ll be totally fine!

Chapter 37

“Me? A rookie explorer like me? What could someone as important as the head of the Guild possibly want?”

Why had this man gone so far as to hijack the entire stream just to contact me?

Was it because I defeated the Hero?

Because of the Dungeon Master?

The Nether King maybe?

Or something else entirely…?

But more than that, who did he think he was, taking over everyone’s connection like this? I didn’t care if he was the Guild’s supreme commander—that kind of abuse of authority wasn’t okay.

> Calling yourself a rookie after everything you’ve pulled off is a bit of a stretch, don’t you think, Daishi Ajiri? I’ve watched your entire broadcast. You’re already a full-fledged explorer.

“…Uh, thanks.”

He won’t hijack twenty million viewers just to flatter me, right?

“I’m exhausted, so could you get to the point?”

It wasn’t that I was angry. I just didn’t have enough energy left to sit through meaningless pleasantries.

Please. Just tell me what you want.

> Heh. Don’t glare at me like that, Daishi Ajiri. This won’t take long. All you have to do is say yes, and there won’t be anything for you to worry about.

That sounded suspiciously loaded. The more confident he sounded, the more certain I became that whatever he was about to propose was something I’d never be able to accept so easily.

“Then say it.”

> Once you guys leave the dungeon, spend one night at the hotel we’ve designated. After that, I’d like you to come directly to the top floor of Guild Headquarters and meet with me personally. Naturally, every arrangement has already been made. We’ve prepared a proper reception, and our people will be waiting at the entrance to the Nether-Class Dungeon to escort your group.

Yeah… right.

There was no way I was buying that.

> If I told you this honestly, you’d naturally be wary and refuse. However… what if I told you this is the only way I can guarantee your safety?

“That’s a threat! I don’t actually have a choice, is that what you’re saying?!”

“Daishi-san?”

Mina tilted her head.

“You’ve been staring at the comments and muttering to yourself this whole time. What’s going on?”

“Mina-chan…”

I let out a weary sigh.

“The Guild’s boss is inviting us to Headquarters.”

“W-what!?”

“He wants us to come. Right now, my dungeon stream has been hijacked by someone named Kagami Yuda.”

The instant I said his name, everyone except Ryunosuke froze in place.

Well… I couldn’t blame them. Anyone who’d spent even a little time as an explorer knew exactly who that name belonged to. It was the kind of name that carried enough weight to stop people in their tracks.

Shion was the first to recover.

“…It’s a trap. No question about it.”

A bead of cold sweat ran down Shion’s cheek as she spoke, her expression grim.

“But if we leave on our own, we’ll just get arrested anyway, right? At this point, we don’t really have a choice.”

Satsuki grasped the heart of the situation surprisingly quickly. Considering everything that had happened—and the way this conversation was going—it didn’t seem like refusing the Guild Master’s invitation was an option.

“Honestly, I hate to admit it, but…”

Shion folded her arms with a look saying, “Go on, I’m listening.”

“Even if it’s a trap, sitting here won’t accomplish anything. We’ll just run out of food and die down here.”

Mina-chan gave a reluctant nod.

“I don’t like it either… but she’s right.”

Mina-chan and Shion-san also seem to understand the situation and have made up their minds.

“Shaaaahhh!! Koaaaaah!!”

Ryunosuke let out an enthusiastic battle cry for some reason.

Well, whatever. At least everyone had made up their minds.

Then a new message appeared in the frozen comment feed.

> So that’s a unanimous decision, then? Excellent. Simply leave the dungeon and speak to the men in black suits waiting outside. And one more thing—leave the stream running. If you end the broadcast, we’ll consider that a rejection of our proposal… and you’ll be taken straight to prison instead.

“Ryunosuke… whatever you do, don’t get so fired up that you hit the stream camera’s—”

“Ah! Hey!”

“Quit messing around!!”

“Shion! Thanks for grabbing him!”

That was close…

A single accidental swipe, and we’d have been hauled straight off to prison.

“Oh! Right, Yuda-san!”

I suddenly remembered there were two things I needed to take care of before we left.

“Can you give me another five minutes?”

A new message appeared immediately.

> Hmm? Make it three. I’m not a man with time to waste.

For someone running the Guild, Kagami Yuda was surprisingly willing to negotiate.

Maybe going to Guild Headquarters wouldn’t be so—No!

That was exactly the kind of thinking I needed to avoid. It’s obvious that he is plotting something. When the time came to face him, I’d have to stay on my guard and never let my defenses slip.

Right. No time to waste.

First things first. There was something I’d been dying to check ever since all the chaos settled down. My status screen.

Everything had happened so fast that I hadn’t gotten a chance to look at it. And honestly…

I’d been incredibly curious to see what it looked like now.

Title:
【Enlightened One】

The wall of numbers was getting ridiculous. At this point, looking at my status felt less like reading a character sheet and more like staring at the source code of a computer.

Oh?

My surplus Funeral Points had finally started piling up.

5,555. Now that was a number. I have to think carefully about how to spend them later, but there wasn’t time for that now.

Then there were my skills.

…Huh?

I learned a new one.

New Skill: Burial Samsara. The name alone told me absolutely nothing. Even if I read the description, I probably wouldn’t understand it. Still, I’ll check it out later.

“All right. One last thing…”

There was one more matter I’d wanted to take care of. Something that had been on my mind ever since before I fought the real Hero.

It was time.

“Itembox!”

BOOM!

My Item Box materialized before me. Without hesitation, I reached inside and rummaged through its contents. There were two things I wanted to retrieve. I pulled out the first.

“Satsuki-chan.”

“Y-yes?”

“This…”

“Ah…! T-that’s…”

Resting in my hand was a delicate silver pendant. A fine chain supported a single small blue gemstone that glimmered softly at its center. I found it on the second floor of the Nether-Class Dungeon. If I remembered correctly, it was called the Rune Pendant. And engraved on the back was Satsuki’s name.

“Oh! So it was yours after all, Satsuki!”

Beaming from ear to ear, I gently placed the pendant into her hands.

“My mother’s pendant…”

Satsuki-chan clutched it tightly to her chest.

“I lost it somewhere… and after I ended up with the Hero, I never had a chance to look for it.”

“So it was something that precious huh.”

“I’m really glad I managed to get it back.”

Satsuki-chan’s eyes shimmered with tears as she hugged the pendant.

So that explained why the gemstone looked so worn with age. Honestly, finding it had been pure luck. And it was only because the viewers had searched every corner of the second floor of the Nether-Class Dungeon so I got it. If anything, they deserved the credit.

Still… seeing it safely back where it belonged made me genuinely happy.

“Daishi-san… thank you so much.”

“Ah, well… it wasn’t really me. The viewers were the ones who found it.”

“Really?”

Her face brightened.

“Then when I can stream again, I’ll make sure to thank everyone personally!”

They’d probably be thrilled to hear that. Thinking back, the viewers had helped me countless times.

Not just Satsuki-chan. They’d saved me more times than I could count.

Someday… I wanted to find a way to repay them, too.

> Is it finished?

“Oh! Wait!”

“There’s one more thing I need to give Satsuki!”

Yuda-san’s impatient reminder flashed across the screen.

Right. No time to waste.

“Satsuki.”

“Hm? Did I lose something else?”

“…This.”

“…?!”

“This belongs to you, doesn’t it?”

The time had finally come. At long last… I am about to fulfill the mission I’d been carrying around forever. Returning Satsuki-chan’s panties.

I reached into the Itembox, pulled out the unmistakable T-shaped piece of underwear, and spread it open just enough so she’d recognize it.

“HWAAAAAAAHHH!!”

“Wha—?!”

“Final Flame Sword!!”

“WAAAAAHHH!!”

Satsuki-chan instantly drew her sword, wrapping it in a colossal tornado of fire as she lunged into a battle stance.

“W-Whyyyyy?!”

“Ashen Inferno Blade!”

SLASH!!

FWOOSH!!

The evidence…

…was completely incinerated.

“O-ohh. Hot! Hot! Hot! HOT!!”

“T-that embarrassing panty is not mine!!”

Come on! Even if you were embarrassed, did you really have to unleash your ultimate technique?!

And, why burn it?!

What a waste!”

They were obviously yours! And they’re really hot too!

(…Sigh.)

The panties crumbled into ash, drifting gently through the air. The glowing embers sparkled beautifully as they floated away.

“Well, there’s practically no point in wearing that panty anyway.”

(Does… Daishi really like that kind of thing…?) Mina wondered silently.

“Shaaaahhh!! TTTT!”

> Are you done, Daishi Ajiri? Time’s up.

Yuda-san’s final, merciless message appeared on the floating screen while the heat from Satsuki-chan’s flaming sword still lingered in the air.

It was a bit hectic at the end, but finally we’re heading back to the surface and towards the guild headquarters.

What kind of fate was waiting for us there?

None of us knew.

Not yet.

“Waaahhh! That was my favorite one! Daishi-san, you idiot!”

…You burned them yourself!

Honestly… I could be an idiot sometimes. But Satsuki wasn’t exactly one to talk.

Oh well…

“Fine, fine. My bad.…”

Chapter 36

“Daishi-san!”

“Old man!”

“Kwaaah!”

The moment I emerged from the space-time vortex onto the first floor of the Nether-Class  Dungeon, Mina-chan, Shion, and Ryunosuke spotted me and rushed over.

I was so exhausted I could barely stay on my feet.

But seeing the relief on their faces, hearing their cheerful voices…

It felt like I regained just a little of my strength.

“I’m back, everyone!”

A smile came to my face before I even realized it.

Incidentally, the Nether King had kindly removed the lingering stench of Hell Gate as a parting favor. So there was no need to worry about a repeat of the incident where poor Satsuki-chan had passed out from the residual smell alone.

“…Looks like it’s over huh.”

“Yeah! I sent the Hero flying!”

Shion’s simple remark summed everything up.

I said I sent him flying. But to be perfectly accurate, the Nether King had simply sucked the Hero into his own gate.

Well… there wasn’t much point in explaining the finer details now. Besides, I didn’t possess the vocabulary—or the brainpower—to properly explain whatever that had been.

> Welcome back, old man!
> Things have finally settled down!
> Everyone looks so happy!
> Hm? Where’s Satsuki?
> Is she still asleep?
> No, look over there.
> Isn’t that her hiding in the corner?
> What’s she doing over there?
> Is she embarrassed?
> Come on, celebrate the reunion already!
> Go escort her over, old man!

Using the flood of comments as my guide, I searched for Satsuki.

They said she was hiding in a corner…

Ah!

There she is!

“Hey—! Satsuki-chan!!”

Sure enough, tucked away in a narrow space by the wall—just barely large enough to hide a single person—was a familiar figure. Peeking out with only half her face visible, but there was no mistaking that adorable face. It’s Amane Satsuki, the girl I’d conquered the Beginner Dungeon with.

“Satsuki!”

“What are you hiding for?!”

Mina called out.

“Get over here already.”

Shion added.

“Shyaaaah!”

Even Ryunosuke chimed in.

But instead of encouraging her, the combined pressure from the two of them—and one dragon—only made Satsuki shrink back.

She quickly hid her face again.

…Was Satsuki always this shy?

I’d always thought of her as the bold, headstrong type. Turns out, she had an unexpectedly cute side.

Alright. Time for the responsible adult to step in. I’d welcome her back like a gentleman.

“…Ah.”

“I’m back—and welcome back, Satsuki-chan! I’m so glad we both made it back safely!”

Even though I was tired, my super speed was undiminished.

Like teleportation itself, I crossed the distance between us in an instant. I gently took her hand, ready to share the joy of our reunion together.

“D-Daishi-san…”

“The Hero’s already been defeated!”

“So you don’t have to worry anymore!”

“B-but…”

After everything that had happened, maybe it was only natural that Satsuki-chan had lost some of her usual confidence. She stood there fidgeting, wearing an expression full of anxiety.

I couldn’t really blame her.

Still…

Alright.

Time to act like a man.

“Yo!”

“Hyaaah! W-wait, Daishi-san…!”

Seeing how awkward and out of place she seemed, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I swept Satsuki up in a princess carry and marched her back toward everyone else.

“Don’t worry! I’m not touching your butt!”

Years of being a corporate wage slave had taught me one lesson the hard way—absolutely no sexual harassment. So I am being very careful about where my hands were. That shouldn’t be a problem.

> Nice one, old man!
> Welcome back, Satsuki!
> She’s gotten so timid.
> Satsuki-taaaan!
> So glad you’re safe!!
> Hey! Why are you carrying her like a princess?!
> Put her down!
> I’m suing you!
> Sexual harassment! Sexual harassment! Sexual harassment!
> Hey! You totally grabbed her butt just nowww!!

“I didn’t touch anything! Shut up!”

“Uu…”

“Huh? What’s wrong, Satsuki…?”

“Uwaaaaaahhh!!”

“E-eeeeh?!”

H-Hold on! I really didn’t touch her butt!

Why is she crying?!

Oh no… this is going to get me canceled again!!

“I… I was so scared the whole time…”

“…Ah?”

“Why didn’t you take me with you…?!”

“Uh… well… I’m… sorry…”

“Daishi-san, you big meanie!!”

Still cradled in my arms, Satsuki-chan began pounding lightly against my chest as tears streamed down her face. Watching all the fear and tension she’d been holding back finally burst free at once, I couldn’t help feeling a deep pang of guilt.

“I’m sorry. I won’t leave you behind again.”

“(Sniffle)… Really?”

“Yeah. So… will you keep exploring the dungeons with me?”

“Yes!!”

A smile finally returned to Satsuki’s face, even though it was still a complete mess of tears and a runny nose.

Good. If she’s feeling even a little better now… that’s enough for me.

….Um…

Satsuki? Could you please stop wiping your nose on my robe?

“There we go!”

“Ah! Stay like this a little longer!”

“Please… have mercy. I’m pretty exhausted too…”

The moment I set her down after bringing her back to everyone, she immediately complained.

It was a relief to see she’d returned to her usual self. Though she’s already becoming just a little high-maintenance again.

“Satsuki! Don’t push your luck!”

Mina-chan stepped in to scold her.

Thank goodness.

“Mina…”

“W-what?”

“I never got to thank you, did I?”

“You’re the one who rescued me… aren’t you?”

“Huh?! Y-yeah! That’s right! It was really hard, you know!”

I knew it.

So Mina really had been the one to save Satsuki.

Still… How had she managed to rescue her from a situation that hopeless?

I wasn’t there, so I didn’t see the actual rescue. I want to get some rest now, so I won’t ask for now, but maybe I’ll ask tomorrow.

“Thank you, Mina!”

“Ah, y-yeah. But Shion and Ryunosuke helped too. I couldn’t have done it alone!”

“…Can what happened really be called ‘rescuing’ her? (Ngh—)”

“Ahaha! Shion, that’s enough!”

“Shyaaaaang!!”

For some reason, Mina-chan hurriedly clamped a hand over Shion’s mouth while laughing nervously. As if in agreement, Ryunosuke let out a strange cry.

…Somehow, I got the feeling I was better off not learning exactly what had happened during Satsuki’s rescue.

“Anyway… thank you, everyone!”

“Y-you’re welcome! B-by the way, Daishi-san, what are we going to do now?”

Mina asked, quickly changing the subject.

She forcefully steered the conversation in a different direction. Well… the details of Satsuki’s rescue could wait. Planning our next move was far more important.

“Well…”

I briefly explained everything that had happened and laid out the Nether King’s proposal before asking everyone what they thought.

◆◆◆

“Going back to the surface is fine, but…”

Mina-chan murmured with a troubled expression.

Returning to the surface. Everyone wanted to do so. The problem is that it is an incredibly dangerous choice.

“If we go back normally, they’re going to arrest us.”

Shion said bluntly.

“Yeah…”

She had put exactly what everyone was thinking into words.

> Come stay at my place, old man!
> We’ll drink all night and swap stories!
> I already sent you a DM!
> I’ll hide Satsuki!
> Shion! Check your DMs!!
> What does Ryunosuke even eat?
> Mina, you free tonight?
> (Heavy breathing emoji)
> There’s no way they can escape Guild Headquarters.
> The entrance to the Nether-Class  Dungeon is packed right now.
> Looks like Guild Headquarters has people stationed everywhere.
> If they unleash their abilities on the surface, they’ll get the death penalty.
> Nobody could actually capture the old man, though.
> Don’t be so sure. It’s a big world.
> Dungeon Law is international law.
> The really dangerous people from the U.N. will show up.
> Worst case, an entire country could get erased.
> Seriously…? That’s terrifying.

Wait….

Doesn’t that mean, we can’t go back to the surface?

What are we supposed to do now…?

> Pardon the interruption.

“…Hm?”

> Huh…?
> W-what…?
> The video’s…

The torrent of comments suddenly stopped.

Only a single message remained.

> First of all, allow me to congratulate you on defeating the Hero, Ajiri Daishi.

…Huh?

The chat had frozen. Except for that one person.

Who… is this?

> Ah, right. I haven’t introduced myself yet.
> My name is Kagami Yuda, Representative of the Far East Branch of the International Dungeon Guild Association.
> I look forward to making your acquaintance.

The one who had hijacked the chat of over twenty million viewers was none other than the man at the very top of Guild Headquarters.

Chapter 35

The moment the real Hero was swallowed into the center of Hell Gate, the Nether King appeared before me in his usual holographic form.

With a weary sigh, he scratched his head and grumbled,

“Good grief… That Hero fellow really did as he pleased with this Nether-Class  Dungeon. I spent ages fine-tuning its balance with master craftsmanship, and now I have to fix the whole thing…”

“…Is it.… over…?”

To be honest…

I simply followed the Nether King’s instructions at the very end. I didn’t really feel like I defeated the Hero. My legs gave out beneath me, and all I could do was sink to the floor and mumble those few words.

“You’ve done well, young lad.”

The old man smiled faintly.

“The primary source has been eliminated.”

“I see… that’s… good to hear…”

Maybe it was because all the tension I’d been carrying suddenly vanished… but an overwhelming wave of exhaustion crashed over me. There were so many things I needed to ask. So many mysteries still left unanswered. Yet my mind refused to work. Thinking itself felt like too much effort.

In times like this… I’d just let the viewers do the thinking for me.

The chat immediately exploded with questions.

> What’s the connection between Hell Gate and the old man?
> What’s the relationship between the Nether King and the old man?
> How are the Nether King and the Dungeon Master connected?
> How exactly does Hell Gate work?
> So… what was the Hero, in the end?
> I want to hear the Nether King’s backstory.
> What’s going on with the old man’s body right now?
> Fastest route for an RTA clear of the Nether-Class  Dungeon?
> What’s old man Nether King’s weakness?
> Do they even need to fight anymore?
> Wait… why are we even here in the first place?
> Isn’t Guild Headquarters the real enemy?

I casually asked the twenty million people watching the stream in real time if they had any questions for the Nether King. And that turned out to be a terrible idea. The comments started flying by at such an absurd speed that even I couldn’t read them anymore.

…Yeah. That one’s on me.

There were so many questions that my brain only got more tangled trying to keep up.

“It seems you’ve all got quite a lot you’d like to ask. But I won’t be answering.”

“Cheapskate.”

Seriously?

So asking had been pointless after all.

“As for the Hero…”

The old man shrugged.

“I don’t know a blessed thing.”

So even the Nether King considered the Hero—and everything surrounding him—to be an unexpected anomaly. Which, honestly, made sense. If he’d known everything from the beginning, there was no way he’d have let someone run wild through his own dungeon and wreck the place.

The bigger picture…

I’ll probably have to uncover that myself.

“…Can I ask just one thing?”

It would leave a terrible taste in my mouth if I walked away without asking anything.

Come on, old man.

Just answer one question.

“I believe I already said I wouldn’t answer.”

The Nether King folded his arms.

“…Still.”

“Hmm… You did defeat the Hero for me. So… I’ll answer one question, so long as it’s something I actually know.”

In truth, there were dozens of things I wanted to ask.

But there was only one that truly mattered.

“The way things are now… is there really no way for you and me to avoid fighting each other?”

“There is no such option. Okay, that’t it.”

“…That was fast!”

He cut me off without a moment’s hesitation.

His expression remained cold.

His answer left no room for argument.

“Why?! You helped me defeat the Hero! We’re both being targeted by Guild Headquarters! And at this point, it’s practically like part of your body has fused with mine! So why do we have to fight each other at all?!”

I’d come this far because that troublesome loli goddess had insisted on it.

But originally… she’d been your superior, and you were her subordinate, weren’t you?

So if everyone just sat down and talked things through…

Couldn’t you guys just simply make peace…?

“There are reasons for everything up there. If you truly want to reconcile with me, you’ll have to conquer this nether-level area, defeat me, and make me submit. When that happens, I’ll have a frank and honest conversation with you.”

“…What are these reasons for everything up there?”

“I told you there was only one question. That’s it!”

Tch!

I tried to get him to talk by going with the flow, but it didn’t work. My sales skills, [leading questions], have really fallen from grace.

The chat continued to race by.

> Looks like clearing the Nether-Class  Dungeon is mandatory no matter what.
> I’m way more worried about what Guild Headquarters is planning.
> The Hero had to be their trump card, right?
> Who knows.
> Wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve got something even worse hidden away.
> The theory that the Unique Classes are all part of Guild Headquarters’ scheme is looking more convincing.
> There were still a few other people with Unique Classes, weren’t there?
> We know almost nothing besides the Hero and the Demon Knight.
> I’ve got a really bad feeling about this…
> Is the Dungeon Master’s dungeon going to be okay?
> That’s probably where the real battle is headed.
> Makes sense—it’s the source of everything.
> Can’t everyone just get along already?!
> Maybe the old man will end up being the bridge between them all.
> Half your body, half your soul… you’re connected to both sides now.
> The future’s resting on your shoulders, old man.
> Just don’t let the dungeon streams disappear!
> I don’t want this fun to end.
> We’re counting on you, old man!

I caught snippets of the chat as it flew by.

Theories. Words of encouragement. People placing their hopes in me.

I couldn’t possibly read everything… but if everyone was counting on me, then all I could do was give it my best.

It might be a fresh start…

But my next objective was clear.

Conquer the Nether-Class  Dungeon.

“Still…”

The Nether King muttered.

“Hm?”

“Repairing this place is going to take a fair bit of time. I’d like to get started immediately, but first, you lot will have to leave the dungeon.”

…Wait. We get to go home?

YES!!

“Honestly, that helps a lot. I’m completely exhausted you see.”

I’d been exploring nonstop ever since entering the Beginner Dungeon.

If I was being honest…I’d really wanted the chance to rest and recharge. Besides, it had to be late at night by now.

A hot bath.

A drink.

Then collapsing onto a nice, fluffy bed.

That sounded like heaven.

“I’ve been thinking, since I’m renovating anyway, I might as well go all the way. I’m planning to dramatically remodel the place—from one hundred floors down to just ten. So you can take about a week off.”

…Yeah.

That sounded like a fantastic renovation.

I’d thought a hundred floors was ridiculously excessive from the very beginning. Cutting it down to ten would make me very happy.

Though… A whole week?

What am I even supposed to do back on the surface?

Well. No point worrying about that now. I’d figure it out with everyone else—and ask Satsuki-chan and the viewers what they thought.

“Don’t get the wrong idea. Just because it’ll only have ten floors doesn’t mean it’ll be any easier. If anything… I’m planning to make it far denser. So spend this week preparing yourself.”

“Got it!”

I answered with as much enthusiasm as ever.

Though…

I’d really appreciate it if “denser” didn’t mean “Hell Gate-level concentrated.”

Still. For the first time in what felt like forever… everything had finally settled down.

“As a special departure service, I’ll send you straight back to your companions.”

“Much appreciated.”

“One week from now, return to the Nether-Class  Dungeon. And don’t even think about saying, “Actually… I changed my mind” and running away.”

“Hah! As if I’d do that!”

The Nether King’s hologram began to distort. Moments later, it transformed into a swirling space-time vortex.

If I stepped through it… It would take me back to the first floor, where everyone was waiting.

“Alright!”

My body felt like it was about to collapse from exhaustion, but just knowing I was finally going home filled me with energy.

Time to head back.

“…Hm?”

Just as I was about to step into the portal…

A familiar message suddenly appeared before my eyes.

Well… with a little help from the Nether King, sure— but I was still the one who’d defeated the Hero. This was only natural.

《 Daishi leveled up. 》

Chapter 34

Ooooon… Ooooon…

“Hell Gate…”

Though it stood behind me, I could make out the colossal, sinister gate through my half-open eyes. Then it hit me. That unmistakable scent.

Strangely nostalgic…

The same overwhelming odor filled my nostrils, instantly bringing back memories of my battle with the Rakshasa.

“…Thank goodness…”

“…Looks like… I managed to activate it…”

To be honest, I barely remembered what had happened the moment it activated. I vaguely recalled unleashing it at almost the exact same instant as the Hero’s ultimate technique…

But beyond that? I had no idea.

I couldn’t explain what had happened—

Or why things had ended up like this.

> Hell Gate’s here!
> Old man! You still alive?!
> Still as massive and terrifying as ever.
> Ugh… it looks like it smells awful…
> Ooooon… ooooon… Kekeke.
> This series really mixes comedy and life-or-death drama like nothing else.
> Heal yourself!
> Don’t forget you’re on the verge of dying!
> Item Box!
> No, check where the Hero is first!
> Where’d the Hero go?!
> The camera’s only showing the gate—we can’t tell what’s happening!
> Camera! Get around to the front already!

Just as the viewers had pointed out, I was currently trapped between the wall of the forty-eighth floor and the newly summoned Hell Gate. From where I stood, I couldn’t see what was happening on the other side at all. The gate stretched all the way to the ceiling of the dungeon, so climbing over it to get a look was out of the question.

Just like during my battle against the Rakshasa…

If I wanted to see what lay beyond the gate, I’d have to carefully peek around the side without exposing myself.

> Nice! Good camera work!
> There he is! The Hero!
> He looks completely wiped out!
> He’s down on one knee, gasping for air.
> Guess that last ultimate attack drained him dry.
> Seriously, this camera is insanely good.
> It survived all those lightning attacks.
> Even the old man’s on the verge of death!
> At this point, the camera might be the strongest character in the story.

Nice one, camera!

Thanks to the stream switching to the front view—while still leaving the chat visible—I finally had a rough idea of what was happening on the other side. It looked like the Hero had burned through an incredible amount of stamina with that last attack.

“Item Box!”

Healing came first. I pulled a recovery potion from the box.

Gulp… gulp…

“Phew…”

Alright. My HP and MP should both be completely restored now. Everything was finally in place. The time had come to put an end to this pointless, infuriating battle. After being hollowed out by the deathly wind of Hell Gate…

I’d finish him off with the most devastating Cremation he’d ever seen!

“Ooooon… Ooooon…”

Rumble…

WHOOOOOOOSH…!

Oh. It looked like the asterisk-shaped bloom had opened across the surface of Hell Gate.

The sound reminded me of an air conditioner blasting icy air through a room that had been scorching hot only moments before.

And the fragrance—

No, the concentration of that glorious stench—

Had become even richer.

All the evidence I needed.

“Now then… let’s see what became of the Hero…”

With my wounds healed and my confidence restored, I walked over to the edge of the rear side of Hell Gate and cautiously leaned my head around the corner for a peek.

By now… the Hero should’ve been nothing more than a corpse.

“Let’s have a look…”

…

“Hm?”

> Huh…?
> Wait, what?!
> Oh, come on…
> Doesn’t he… look healthier?
> Did it fail?
> No way, that thing definitely reeks!
> The air’s literally turned yellow!
> You’re kidding me…
> Hell Gate’s death wind doesn’t work on the Hero?!
> He’s actually… recovering…?

“…”

W-Wait… that’s possible?!

“HAHAHAHAHA!!”

The Hero threw back his head and roared with laughter.

“That’s one hell of a fart wind you’ve got there, you damn Priest!”

He rose back to his feet. The aura surrounding him erupted once more, crackling around his body like the wrath of a thunder god, making the very air tremble.

“I DON’T HATE THIS STENCH AT ALL!!!”

As he bellowed those words, the aura only grew stronger.

Hold on…

Hold on a second!

At this point, it’s not that Hell Gate isn’t affecting him…

It’s practically recharging him!

Stop!

Somebody stop the fart!!

“TURN THE FART OFF!!!”

“Too bad, you damn Priest!”

The Hero grinned from ear to ear.

“The tables have turned!”

T-this is really, really bad…!

If he fired that lightning attack now, empowered by the Nether King’s own energy…

…I’d be blown to atoms!

No, no, no…!

He’s already charging up for a counterattack!

The electricity exploding off him was absolutely insane!

> Yeah… we’re cooked.
> Thanks for everything, old man.
> We’ll never forget you…
> It’s been a fun ride.
> We’ll hold a memorial service for you…
> We’ll crowdfund your grave.

The viewers had already given up on me!!

No… For real?…

This is really it?

There was no way I could deal with that…

『…Shout.』

“…Huh?”

『From the bottom of your soul… shout!』

Nether King Gramps….

But, shout what?

What exactly was I supposed to shout?

Was he telling me to beg for my life?

As if the Hero would spare me just because I pleaded!

『The true essence of Hell Gate… is not in opening it.』

“…What?”

『Though I’d rather not draw in a soul like his…』

…Had the old man finally gone senile?

I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about.

『Enough! There’s no time! Simply shout exactly what I tell you!』

“Alright, alright!”

This might end up being my last words…

But I didn’t exactly have anything else to rely on.

I’d already made up my mind. If screaming at the top of my lungs was my only option…

Then all that was left was for the old man to tell me what to scream.

『Reverse the rectum!』

“REVERSE THE RECTUM!!”

『Reverse Hell Gate!』

“REVERSE HELL GATE!!”

『THE HADES OF FART!!!』

“THE HADES OF FART!!!”

The instant I shouted the Nether King’s bizarre incantation with every ounce of strength I had…

The death wind pouring from Hell Gate stopped. Instantly.

“So you’ve stopped now? Too late! DIE, YOU DAMN PRIEST—”

“…Huh?”

“W-what?!”

By then, the Hero’s aura had already reached its absolute peak.

If his previous attack had been on the tera scale… this one had probably entered the realm of peta.

But then—

“I-It’s… absorbing it…”

“NOOOOO!! MY LIGHTNING!! MY LIGHTNING!!!”

The crackling thunder aura surrounding the Hero was violently sucked toward the center of the giant asterisk engraved upon the Hell Gate.

His immense aura vanished before my eyes.

“N-No…! You’re not taking just my power—YOU’RE TAKING ME TOO!!!”

His clothes and hair whipped wildly as if a hurricane were blowing from behind him.

But that wasn’t it.

The wind is coming from Hell Gate itself. The gate had reversed its flow. Instead of expelling its deadly wind… It is generating an overwhelming vacuum.

It isn’t just draining away his aura. It is trying to swallow the Hero whole.

“Y-you bastard…!! Aaaaaah!”

He went in face first.

Pop!

Schluurp!

“…”

Yep.

The whole thing fit.

> Uh…
> Ah…
> Yeah…
> LMAO, it’s over.
> 🤣🤣🤣
> That’s brutal…

“…It’s over…?”

『Do not underestimate my Hell Gate, young lad.』

The Nether King’s voice echoed in my mind.

『The real show begins now.』

【Genetic profile analysis complete. Linking to the Seat of the Soul.】

“…”

T-the Hell Gate…

It’s talking?!

“Wha—?! Huh? Where am I? Wait… no… this can’t be…!”

Without warning, a skinny man in a business suit appeared where the Hero had been standing just moments earlier. He wore glasses. He looked more like an intellectual office worker than a legendary champion. A tablet was even clutched tightly in his hand.

『That appears to be the true body. 』

“The true body…?”

That’s the Hero?

He didn’t look like a Hero at all. If anything, he looked like some elite corporate employee.

“W-Wait…! Wait just a second! No! NOOOOOOO!!!”

Pop!

“…Ahhhhhhh!”

Schluurp!

The real Hero had appeared out of nowhere… Only to let out a single scream before being sucked straight into Hell Gate.

Just like that. Before I could even process what I’d witnessed… it seemed the final battle against the Hero was over.

> What the heck was that?
> Pretty sure that was just an elaborate gag…
